View Full Version : GAUGES!!!

I just ordered my gauges (prepping for turbo install) and need some help. I got gauges for boost, EGT, and oil pressure but this car has the most idiotic oil filter so a sandwich adapter is out of the question. Someone told me there should be a plug in the oil gallery and i can plug the sending unit in there. uhhhhh what??? Anyone install a oil pressure gauge in the 2AR-FE?

I would just tee it off the factory oil pressure sensor

I got the fitting to split it off the stock sensor but i dont know what size the fitting is. is it supposed to be 1/8 npt? or is it something else. i emailed and pm'd rob from descendant days ago and still nothing.

alright, i got it figured out. well i guess to make this thread worth anything, ill post pictures when all the gauges are in. gotta buddy working on a custom carbon fiber HVAC housing so i can move the HVAC and install my gauges in the stock housing. hopefully that will turn out ok

Y'all with yer buddies lol... I'll be curious to see how it comes out, can't find much of a place to do a gauge install. I keep leaning towards doing an elliptical cut into the top of the dash, let the gauge(s) slope down a bit and get a cover fabbed to sit over it. Looks pricey though.

To bad no one has made a HUD you can install. That would be pimp.

This is probably the only place I would put the gauge @.

GReddy put theirs where the radio is at., and where I the location where I circled in the first picture, i think. You barely can see it.

nah, i mean it looks good but as you can see in the picture, when your sitting in the seat, the steering wheel blocks most of that view, so id rather put them (the important ones anyway) where i can see them without moving around and taking my eyes off the road too long. i have 4 gauges total to install before the turbo install so maybe ill do one there and put the other 3 where the HVAC dials are.

mdiluxe

Yea, not many places where you can put them. The top three are below... I think A pillar gauges are whack, but the side air bags their.

I'm really curious to see what the HVAC controls look like when you're done.

Nice work! Pics of HVAC controls coming soon? Nice touch with the color change for redline and speedo. Speedo needle in the purple = no D.L. if you get caught! lol

Looks great! Geeked about the HVAC relocation. I'm going to be super lame and put everything in a gauge pod on the dash.

the HVAC swap is done, i just need to finish the enclosure for them. i put red LED's at the end and when the blue and red light meet, it made that purple fade color. wasnt expecting that but i love it so its staying that way. ill get more up soon when im done with the HVAC install!

I got to say the placement of those guages is PMBA. Cant wait to see what your hvac controls are gonna look like.

Would you give me some basic details on the HVAC LED swap? I'm about to dive head long into LED swaps and am ordering the LEDs now.

What do I need to do what you did? I'm going a boring white or possibly gray if I can figure out how I want to do it. LED type? Quantity? Tips/tricks?

Thanks

First tip, do NOT use white unless you can find some low output ones. i used white for blinkers and it was like a strobe light at night. no good. the leds on the gauges are PLCC-2 type. i used about 10-15 total i think. def no more than 15. as far as tips, low heat on the solder iron, double check everything off the gauge face to make sure you are swapping the ones you want, and TAKE YOUR TIME!

as for hvac, thats a whole different monster. i used 5mm quadrate LEDs (blue) for the bulb replacement with a 440 ohm resistor tied to the positive lead and 3mm regular leds for the button lights, those are already leds so no need for resistors there.

if you need any other help, let me know and ill try to get the pictures up that i took while i was tearing everything apart.

oh, and when you get your leds, the longer lead is the positive and for the PLCC-s, you will see a small notch on one corner of the LED, just put them on the same way the others came off and you should be good.

im not running an oil guage on mine (probly should do that soon) but i have my boost guage where mdiluxe showed in his pik, and i have my a/f guage in my glove compartment and my boost controler below my mirror buttons. if i were you ide avoid the dash mount ones thats a dead give away ur turboed unless u wanna make it obvious lol
but as far as turbo quistions ide hit up the guys over at descendant racing, done nothin but helped me out with my build.

BeloZero

there is NO way i would mount gauges on the dash, tacky... i have 4, water temp next to the radio, and the other 3 where the HVAC was. cant see them from outside and looks way better. I didnt want to put any of them in the glove because it kinda defeats the purpose of having it in the first place, i dont even like the gauge by the radio because i have to look around the steering wheel to see it.

06-16-2011, 04:26 AM
Ya its kinda a pain in the ___ but on my boost controler has a digital boost guage built in... Unless you go with a in dash my buddy has it is a head unit with a setting that has all ur guages programed into the head unit so u just hit a button and all ur guages are there, I think he paid like 2 grand for it but I forget where he got it... I think ebay

BeloZero
06-16-2011, 04:49 AM
yeah, that would be nice but 2 grand is a bit outta my price range. i dont really like the glow shift gauges either but i wasnt about to spend 300 on one gauge

DtrTc2
06-16-2011, 04:52 AM
Ya I hear ya... My boost guage was 70, a/f guage was 200 and boost controler/guage was 370... So maybe eventually ill eliminate the guages and go with the head unit but I wanna invest in other things first lol
