View Full Version : Original tires finally going out... suggestions?
Skeenis 05-24-2011, 08:52 PM I have a 2009 xD with 35,000 miles. My tires are wearing really low and it is time to change.
Do you suggest Pirelli or Goodyear? I am leaning toward the 205/55-16.

CXTKRS1 05-24-2011, 09:28 PM Looking for performance or comfort and what is your budget?
Skeenis 05-24-2011, 09:50 PM Comfort. I'm not a racer, I'm a saver. I value quality, especially when it comes to safety. Don't really need to be excessive, though. Hope that makes sense.
CXTKRS1 05-24-2011, 10:26 PM Then I recommend the Michelin HydroEdge, excellent comfort while awesome wet weather traction. The tire comes with a 90K warranty and if you take care of them expect to see 100K plus out of these tires.

Bobielon 08-03-2011, 03:56 AM 90k miles, thats rad.

I can't agree.. Michelin makes a great tire.. but I wouldnt want one that lasts that long.. They are going to be hard.. which is why they last so long..
In a small lightweight car like the xD.. you want a tire with some give..
One that won't be hard and amplify every bump and rough surface..
I would go with something more conventional that will give you 40 - 50K wear and still be compliant enough for a nice ride.. Look around .. there are plenty of good choices..
GreyFox 08-05-2011, 05:52 PM My xD is getting new tires installed now. Looking for a tire with less road noise and a good warranty. So I'm getting Bridgestone Turanza with Serenity technology 205/55 R16 91H hope they work out for me. The size change will make the speedo 1mph less indicated and alter the odometer
Roller_Toaster 08-05-2011, 06:46 PM General JUST released an amazing tire...

Thread is fairly hard but the sidewalls do a pretty good job of absorbing energy since they are so soft (the tires are usually T rated). I know most Michelin tires are covered under a 30 day try and buy kinda thing so if you do not like them they can be returned and you avoid a restocking fee.
lostxD 09-29-2011, 02:18 AM hey, i'm thinking about purchasing the michelin hydroedge with green x tires.
can someone point me to the most appropriate size for stock steelies?

They are not made in the stock 195/60/16 size and the closest size I know of is 205/55/16. 215/55/16 and 225/50/16 will also fit but they are performance sizes so I'm not sure if the Hydroedges are made in that size.
lostxD 09-29-2011, 11:41 PM thanks,
will be ordering from tirerack. lets hope these will outlast the crappy dunlops oe. only got 31k miles from them :flame:

tirerack has 215/55/16. i don't think they have 205/55/16.

I have the Bridgestone EL-400's and will probably on get 25K out of them. :|
inkblotter11 10-16-2011, 02:44 PM i also have (extensively) shopped 205/55/16s. here is my go to list, based on budget and performance (prices are from various online sources). don't need any snow tires:
TIRE/PRICE/WEIGHT IN LBS
*Conti DW $106, 19
*Ventus v12 $89, 19
Proxes 4 $112, 20
*conti DWS $110, 21
Yoko AD08 $140, 21
Ziex 512 $? , 21
Pilot Exalto PE2 $150, 21
Toyo T1R $165, 21.9
BStone RE760 $112, 22
Yoko S.Drive $95, 23
Dunlop Starspec $114, 24
FK452 $110, 24
* = My faves/ the ones i will most likely purchase in the future.
I read over tire reviews often for owner tips and impressions. some like the conti's require added PSI for better turning performance, for ie.
CXTKRS1 10-17-2011, 01:46 AM I work at a tire shop and for some reason I have had always had horrible luck with the Conti's.

would you mind elaborating? i am particularly interested in extreme contact dw and dws. failures? flaws? other issues? thanks:)

Mileage and price were really the main ones. For the price of the Conti's you could get a Bridgestone or even a Michelin tire that would outperform the Conti's.
inkblotter11 11-18-2011, 05:03 AM REally?? The conti xtreme dw and dws go for like $100. what Bstone or Michelin tires with similar attributes, performance etc could outperform these Contis at that price?

I took in an Acura RL today with two defective Extreme Contact DWS tires and they have maybe 10K miles on them. Also they do not have a large dealer network throughout the country so outside of the online market they are sometimes hard to find. As for other tires I would look at the the Bridgestone HP 550 and the BF GoodRich (made by Michelin) Advantage TA. If you can find some Michelin Hydroedges on sale they will probably outlast the car. Also Hankook makes an excellent tire but I'm not familiar with specific models.
inkblotter11 11-29-2011, 02:35 PM Looked on tirerack and no HP550's there. are they no longer made? also the Advantage TA's are touring performance. I was leaning more towards a performance oriented tire model, instead of comfort, all-season, etc.
Got any suggestions? since you said conti's weren't too good.
oh2bnok 12-06-2011, 07:29 PM Me thinks I will go with a 215 55 16 Cooper cs4 or a falken sincera
Otto_the_Mild 01-05-2012, 08:12 PM The xD's wacky tire size almost confined me to Bridgestone, which came on the car and didn't make it past 27K, or Dunlop, which are fine so long as it never rains. :gun:
However, I discovered that Hankook makes a tire that fits. Since Hankook comes up pretty well on Consumer Reports, I opted for them.
The model is the Optimo H426. You'll find it here: http://www.hankooktireusa.com/Product/product.aspx?pageNum=1&subNum=1&ChildNum=2&FnCode=02
Look under Luxury Performance. Good luck getting them, though. Mine are on a boat waiting to cross the Pacific. :eyes:
Postmaster_G 03-02-2012, 09:32 PM I know this thread may be a little old, but for others out there reading the forum for info i just wanted to say that I just got...
Falken Ziex ze-612
205/55/R16 91V
Even though I just put them on, they feel a bit better than the turanzas that were on there stock, and a bit quieter. I also like the fit a bit better as they don't look so much like pizza cutters.
I have high hopes that theses will be good tires as I am not well funded lol

These tires are meant to be a replacement for the 912 line which were good tires but usually burned up before the 40K miles.
