View Full Version : Got the Panoramic Installed(PICS)
white_box 03-19-2005, 04:26 AM I just got the xB a couple weeks ago, had the sunroof installed earlier this week. It's a Webasto. It was getting dark when I took these pics so they didn't turn out too well. I'll have better ones later.

LiquidXB 03-19-2005, 04:36 AM WOW i really like that alot. If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost?
chadfo 03-19-2005, 04:37 AM Very nice install. How does the glass open?
bBlover 03-19-2005, 04:38 AM looks good
white_box 03-19-2005, 04:40 AM WOW i really like that alot. If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost?
It wasn't too bad. Somewhere along the lines of $1800.
Very nice install. How does the glass open?
The front half of the glass slides back. It slides over the rear portion of the glass.
ShredSled 03-19-2005, 05:31 AM Very nice. I like it a lot!
I guess it's a little late to tell you this, but if I'm not mistaken, there is a serious problem with these sunroofs in xBs. Apparently the giant hole cut in the roof causes structural weakness. Enough that it can ruin the car. There is at least one thread on here about it. Webasto supposedly stopped selling these for xB's because of it.
The good news is, I hear they have bought people all new cars because there is no way to repair the damage. I would keep a real close eye on it if I were you.

Recently another member posted that webasto now offers a support bracket for the panoramic sunrrof kit that cures the roof buckling problem found in xB's. http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=609611&highlight=panoramic+webasto+phone#609611
Awesome. That is good to hear! Thanks for the heads up.

I thought thay problem was with the canvas top that accordians back.
Chimmy3 03-19-2005, 05:53 PM oh daaang tell me if there are any negatives about it (wind noise, leaking, etc whichever)... b/c I sooo want one now... that looks soo nice
Soon2BxB 03-19-2005, 06:20 PM i was the member that posted about the fix
webasto has brackets that need to be installed
i just got mine installed a few days ago as well ...
total cost INSTALLEd 1395 and no TAX :) lifetime warantee
Soon2BxB 03-19-2005, 06:25 PM i was just looking at your pics
they did a not so great job on the install of the box with the OPEN CLOSE buttons... the place that did mine .. even wrapped that in headliner material .. so all you see is the 2 buttons...
i dont like how they left your box exposed like that :( and why put the domelight all the way in the back ?? what good is that
here is a pic of how mine was done .. they intergrated it into the headliner .. you cant even tell its a seperate piece ...
http://home.comcast.net/~tomcranecivic/webasto1.jpg
im sorry to come across as a dick .. but if i paid 1800 and they did that stuff to me id be ____ed :(
Joehnn 03-19-2005, 06:30 PM Looks great. 8)
Let us know how it works over time.
heme11 03-19-2005, 06:39 PM Awesome. That is good to hear! Thanks for the heads up.

I dunno man the color of the control box looks close enough to other light colored plastics found inside the BOX to at first glance pass for oem. I have seen other installs on these boards and in person and his is one of the cleanist i have seen. But your control box looks pretty awesome!
FrankenScion 03-19-2005, 06:42 PM I'm definately liking the second one better.
Thats something that would be pretty easy to go back and do though.
Chimmy3 03-19-2005, 07:06 PM hmm I like the wrapped control unit but... I do think the light moved back there has its advantages... for one thing... now he has a trunk light. and if he gets a rear view with map lights that'll take care of the people who need lights in the front pretty easily. ..
or installing a second light unit like the one you have can probably be relatively easily done.
Soon2BxB 03-19-2005, 07:26 PM i agree a light in the back does have its advantages
but when a roof like this is installed .. they should move the light to an area where it can be used
you shouldn't have to ADD more lights to have a useful domelight when all is said and done
the right thing to do is move it to the front .. so its still useful for what a domelight is supposed to be used for. having just that light in the rear is pointless for a useful domelight
the roof looks like a great install .. i just think i would be irked if i paid 1800 (thats about the highest i have heard of anyone charging for this roof) and they didnt do small things like wrap the box in liner material and putting the domelight in a USEFUL area
Chimmy3 03-19-2005, 08:18 PM btw soon2BxB... where did you get yours done? and have you had any problems with it yet?
Soon2BxB 03-19-2005, 08:24 PM btw soon2BxB... where did you get yours done? and have you had any problems with it yet?
i have only had the roof since Wednesday but so far so good :)
i got it done at Benefit Auto in Rhode Island.... they came highly recommended to me from JUAN at FOX SCION
they are awesome to deal with .. did my roof in a little over a day and the work is top notch
JESSR 03-19-2005, 08:33 PM I like. The install look's really good.
theappe 03-20-2005, 06:18 PM the xB would be so much better if they would come with sunroofs! That would be the ultimate car man. Just pop it open and ride out to the beach!
uncompiled 03-20-2005, 07:26 PM They do come with sunroofs! You just have to pay someone to put one in. :P
bBlover 03-20-2005, 09:47 PM I think he means as an option or standard. But I think it should be an option. Not fair how the tC gets a stock sunroof. ANd the RS xA gets one and neither RS xBs got one.
Chimmy3 03-20-2005, 10:00 PM did anyone ever get the hollandia 500? thats the dual spoiler type panoramic...
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 03-21-2005, 05:34 AM I want to get one, and am thinking I will in April. But here are some questions:
How is the wind noise? Can you open the roof, and drive at hwy speeds without any shake, rattle or roll? Do you have to have the windows down to have no shake? (I had a moon roof that, when you opened it, and did not have the windows at least cracked open, the car shook)..
How is it the car wash? Leaks?
Is it hot in there when the sun beats down? DO the shades help?
Can you open the roof just a bit, to get air in?
The person who had the cloth installed over the device, that looks great, and I love the light up front. Here is a question about that: If they are moving the light anyway, how hard would it be to have two lights in there, one in the front, and one in the rear? Like the xA has?
Sorry for all the questions; I want to get this, but don't want it to shake or leak, or burn me top of me head off in the hot SOUTH FLORIDA sun.
Soon2BxB 03-21-2005, 06:01 AM let me see if i can answer the questions for you
i have had the roof open at 80 mph with no other windows open and did not feel any shaking or anything .. though i will say it is a little on the loud side... its due to the built in deflector that the roof seems to have .. i mean its not so loud u couldnt talk over it .. its just louder then i would like
i have taken it through 2 car washes and no leaking here .. cant speak for the other guy that had his done... mine is also warrantied for life so leaking will never be an issue
YES you can open the roof just a bit .. you have full control over how much is actually open
as for the hot sun through the glass ... the roof glass is tinted 20% so it has plenty of UV protection
and Im the guy with the cloth over the box and light up front ... i dont see why they could not add another to the rear.. just get the part and give it to them when they do the roof install and should be a piece of cake... Wish i had thought of that
any other questions feel free to ask
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 03-21-2005, 07:08 AM Thanks for the prompt response.
Sciond 03-21-2005, 07:25 AM I want one!

who provides the lifetime warrenty? is it the shop?
The webasto site says they only give a 5-year/50k warrenty (non-transferrable).

the shop that did the install said it was warrantied for life against any leaks or any problems with the roof
kaos672 03-21-2005, 09:42 PM KUDOS!!! I like the roof. It looks as if it gives the xB a different feel and look when you are in the inside. Enjoy yourself!!!
GOD Bless
LaVa~NyC 04-01-2005, 05:36 AM i think its a option cause when i went to the dealership u could either get a half or a full..i wish they had had that when i bought my boxx
JohnYxB 04-01-2005, 06:48 AM as long as the shop still around then the warranty is good....shop goes under then there goes ur lifetime warranty. :nails:

ksl_redsoxfan 04-01-2005, 01:30 PM ya when i got my silver xB i had a sunroof installed, and i really like it. it has like 4 different settings mabe i can get some pics some time. but yes roofs are nice. i think i will try to get a different styl roof for my lava xB.
Fujiz_xb 04-01-2005, 01:49 PM did anyone ever get the hollandia 500? thats the dual spoiler type panoramic...
Lonely Raven got i.. im sure when he reads this we WILL BE ____ED. the dealear wouldnt sell him this moon roof so he got the dual on.
I also have the panoramic moonroof.
Imma call the dealer and tell them about the bracket AND to REDO the exterior. If yall can PLEASE take pics of the exterior in closeups so that I can show them a flush job. thanks.
sending pm to LonelyRevena and calling the dealer.
Lonely_Raven 04-01-2005, 02:26 PM Yeah, my dealership informed me, after I had already paid for the Panoramic that
Webasto is no longer supporting the Panormaic moon in the xB because people have
had their roof get crinkled because of so many support pieces having been cut to
install the panoramic moon.
I was flat out told, NO CAN DO. So I'm jealous of you guys that somehow got it
installed. If Webasto has come up with some sort of reinforcement for the panormaic,
then I guess I missed out. No big deal, because I got this setup now.

Sorry to thread hog, I'm only showing this because I've already gotten 3 PMs
about this thread.
I'd really like to know what you guys think about the Panoramic Vs my dual setup.
By the way, my the ones I have are a *pair* of Webasto 3630
Soon2BxB 04-01-2005, 03:06 PM you guys are talking about FLUSH exterior on the webasto 524??? i dont think thats possible ???
what exactly do u mean because mine is def not fLUSH like a slide IN roof would be
i think there is only ONE way to install a 524

hey soon2b does mine look like yours from the exterior?
i like mine over lonely raven (sorry dude) but i like his exterior flush job better..
Skeeterflea 04-02-2005, 01:57 AM I was going to have the 4.5 sq feet of glass installed in my xB back in July when I got it, but didn't feel it was worth the $1200. (My wife convinced me of this) Personally I like the dual 3630's that Raven has. The larger sunroof looks kinda slim from the inside to me. Kinda like the 04 Maxima sunroofs. (I know it's alot larger than the maxima's just a comparison)
just my 2cents of course.
Lonely_Raven 04-02-2005, 02:03 AM Yeah, the #1 drawback to the 3630 is that's it's only a
12.5" opening, and " of that gets covered by the glass.
Sure looks good from the outside, and it's WAY wider then
any other moon roof I've seen.
Skeeterflea 04-02-2005, 02:15 AM I just read this post here. http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=54773&highlight=tc+accident
I wonder how the xB would hold up with that 524 installed.
Soon2BxB 04-02-2005, 03:08 AM yea that is how my 524 install looks as well ... you are not going to get a FLUSH install with this roof
think about how it works ? .... the front glass is higher then the back glass in order for it to slide OVER the back piece... this is how the roof is installed... if you were to have a flush piece... the back glass would have to sink lower then the front piece since they are not actually the same height from the outside
150dBxB 04-03-2005, 11:25 PM does it open?
Soon2BxB 04-04-2005, 02:12 AM does it open?
uhmm does what open ?? if you are talking about the 524 (the panoramic one) of course it opens .. if y ou scroll up fujiz posted pics ... the front piece of glass slides over the back
drew05xb 04-04-2005, 05:00 AM how's the wind noise with the roof closed?
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 04-04-2005, 05:06 AM I hear it's quiet. I hope so.
Soon2BxB 04-04-2005, 05:46 AM how's the wind noise with the roof closed?
with the roof closed ... there is no noise
now with it open .. thats another story
its because of the built in deflector ... it pops up alore more vertical that most so the wind really hits it ... i mean you can drive with it open at 80 ... but its a tad on the noisy side
its not bad at all at slower speeds
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 04-04-2005, 06:20 AM ^^^ Thanks for the prompt and complete reply.
Fujiz_xb 04-04-2005, 01:51 PM no noise..sometimes in windy city chi.
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 04-06-2005, 11:18 PM Today, I got my xB back, and now have the Webasto Panoramic Sunroof in it. PICS I took tonight, at the beach, with the sun setting in the background...Oh, I hope the photos come out well. I'll get them on THURSDAY.
As to the roof itself, I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER. Oh, my gawd. It's great, and brought back the 'new' car smell! Oh boy!
Man, there is NOTHING like driving down A1A, the beach to your left, the sun to your right...waves, clear blue skies, with the occasional palm tree overhead...
Nice. Best money I have spent on the Box yet.

Box916 04-07-2005, 03:28 AM I like Lonely Raven's  set-up It doesn't look like you could block off the sun when you don't want it with the panoramic....or is there a cover that slides over? Does the extra support bracket cost extra? Either way, both setups are bad@$$ and it's better than having no sunroof at all like me :loser: ...haha
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 04-07-2005, 05:31 AM It doesn't look like you could block off the sun when you don't want it with the panoramic....or is there a cover that slides over? Does the extra support bracket cost extra?
There are FOUR covers that 'slide' over, sort of like blinds. Or maybe that is the wrong word. Anyway, you can use these, and even have the roof open with them. The support bracket that comes with it? I did not notice an extra charge for it; the dude that did the install, told me it's all part of the package.
I love my roof.
Box916 04-07-2005, 05:35 AM Both are awesome, a great aftermarket investment!
I'm getting mine for $960 Installed from a guy that works at Webasto & does side jobs... SWEET!

Holy crap, that's a good deal, sign me up in May when I'm out of school and I'll drive down and get one installed!

Can you get a pic of the "blind shade" thing for the panoramic? Thanks!
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 04-08-2005, 06:32 AM I'll try. I just put a bunch of pics up. If you click the link for BOXCAR WILLIE, you'll find them. I think there is a shot of the roof from the inside...http://forums.newbeetle.org/attachment.php?s=&postid=553263
That might work...who knows. Stranger things have happened.
Box916 04-08-2005, 07:08 AM Thanks a lot man, that looks amazing, I think I'll get one done soon, I gotta see it in person first though
xBino 04-08-2005, 10:07 AM is it any noisier in the cabin with a sunroof?
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 04-08-2005, 04:00 PM is it any noisier in the cabin with a sunroof? No, not with the top closed...
I drove last night north on 95, and had the top open, windows down, and you know what? It was no worse then if I just had the windows down. THEN, I put the windows up, but left the top open, and that seemed to make more noise then with the windows down along with the top open.
Does that make any sense? However, on 95 top closed, windows closed, it was fine. Quiet.
Hope that helps.
(cruising along at about 80 MPH, BTW...which was keeping up with traffic)
roof buckling
holy crap...
White_Toyota_bB 05-07-2005, 08:50 AM Very nice
Looks really good
Now I want to install one
