I just picked up the box a couple of weeks ago and have <300 miles on it.

I noticed a hum noise a couple of times in the first few days. It did it at low speed generally starting cold and going down an incline. It was only a couple of times, and seemed to go away.

I left it sitting for a week while I was traveling and just got back. Took it for a drive today and it is making a horrible whine / hum from the front at low speeds.

The noise is independent of engine speed, and also doesn't go away when I press the brakes... the only thing that I can think (since it seems independent of the brakes and the engine) is that it is some sort of bearing.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

It's so bad I don't even want to drive the damn thing. It's one thing to drive a car that gets noticed for its looks, quite another to drive one that gets noticed because it sounds like something vital is about to fall out of it.

Actually, I think it may have been brakes. Possibly from the weak break-in recommendation in the Scion manual that would never get the brake pads uo to temperature.

I just took the box to a local industrial park and did a series of 40 - 5 mph hard braking runs. Noise didn't happen on the way home. It seems worse when the car is cold, so I'm letting it rest for a little while until I try again.

I don't want anyone to hear the noise from this thing and think the box is a piece of crap... especially after I've talked the car up so much to everyone I know.

Funny how something like a constant loud whine from the car at all speeds can make me go from loving the car to hating absolutely everything about it... if you can't drive the thing, its basically a 5 foot tall pile of japanese crap in the driveway.

No. Car is completely stock.

It's not like the 'honk' of an intake under throttle. I could live with that sound. This is just a very non-automotive sound that is just loud, annoying and embarassing.

Sound somewhat like a bad belt squeel, but it's independent of engine speed so that can't be it.

is yours auto tranny? do it only make the niose when its in motion? I can only really notice mine if i'm stopped...

I am taking it to the dealer... it's just that I had a major run-around from the Honda dealer when I had a strange sound from my Civic. They were helpful enough, but if I had gone in at the first visit with evidence of other people with the same symptom and the known cause, it would have saved me a ton of time.

I was hoping this was something that may be kind of common.

It is a whistling / whine type sound. I will have to try knocking it into neutral, but it seems to make the noise in just about every gear, and with the clutch pedal depressed.

I can see how something like this would ruin the new car experience. Goodluck at the dealer.

I would not voluntarily drive any car making this noise, new or used. It's a horrible loud sound audible from outide the car. This thing's parked until I have a chance to take it to the dealer.

I should stick to buying old junkers... that way I'm expecting embarassing noises. ;)

I just wanted to see if maybe a long highway run would help things. I don't do much highway driving, but used this as a chance to make a run to Mohegan sun.

Two thoughts.... wheel bearing. go to dealer.

I think it's brake related. I will be bringing it to the dealer tomorrow.

It seems to only happen when the brakes are cool. Heating them up will make the noise go away for a while... and it will come back when they cool again.

Are there known problems with the wheel bearings of these things?

How about tire pressures? I use a stretched tire setup on my xB and they make a humming sound only because of the way they are fitted. Just a second thought. Pressures on stock tires should could about 35-36 pounds.

35-36? isn't supposed to be around 29 psi cold? (according to the door sticker thing?)

I think the weird whistling sound i get is something with/in the passenger's side door. either that or the springs... b/c it happen sometimes if i go over a bump...

I noticed the same humming/vibrating noise before I did the intake headers and exhaust.

i get a wierd noise only when i turn kinda sharp, come to find out it was tire noise from my 17" tires, something about the tread pattern, good luck with you problem

Can you hook us up with a sound clip?

I run a higher tire pressure in the stock steelies and the car ran a lot better and the handling was better too. It seemed more sure footed then. Now i use the aftermarket wheel for the year.
