2 bad coil packs, guess what the dealership said??!!
dealership- "looks like you have 2 faulty coil packs, there is a TSB saying to replace all 4 coils."
me - is that covered under warranty?
dealership - the warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles, you bought your car 3 years and 2 months ago
me- even though i only have 23,000 miles and there is a TSB so you know they are faulty?
dealership - yeah, its not covered cause your past 3 years
me - ok, so how much is this going to cost?
dealership - $840.00
me - F**K THAT!!
ridiculous right? so the reason i am posting this is to see if anyone knows a good site to get quality replacement coil packs.
I found DENSO coil packs for $350 at a local parts shop and found some brand i dont know anything about that sells a pack of 8 for $140 - http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sh...oil/scion.html
i don't think i want to use those. Anybody who didn't go to dealership to replace these have any suggestions.

i'd call scion corporate and pester them for a good will warranty repair. they have a TSB and you aren't far over your warranty. heck, i'd say it should be covered under your 5 year 60k mile warranty.

I would fight it, even tho your over they can work with you a little and bring the price down or meet you half way it's only 2months in the grand scheme of things it's not that long ago considering it's a 3yr warranty and you haven't hit the mileage yet.

welp if they dont cover it under warranty, i have three coils that have. at first i thought my coils went bad because it kept throwing a CEL but i found it later it was my injectors so i bought three extra ones for no reason. i can sell them to u for 140 bucks shipped for 2. I think i have the receipt for them too.... somewhere... but i believe they went for 100 each. give me your parts number so i can match it up to see if they are right for your car.

Other Toyota cars use the very same coil pack! Check into which models do and take a look at eBay offerings.
Here are alternatives from car-stuff.com and although I haven't needed a coil pack yet, they've been great for parts for my Eclipse.

thanks for the replies
@Dkfung88 thanks for the offer but i want to get all 4 replaced, might as well.
i talked to a guy at the parts dept to see how much the parts were, he said there was 2 part numbers and wanted to look at my coil to make sure he was getting the right part. we went out to my car and i removed one of the coils so he could read the number. once we figured out which part we needed to order he looked it up and said they were $125 each. he must have felt bad for me cause he said he would offer me a 15% discount which brought it down to $106 each, $424 for all 4. thats way better then $820 that they wanted to charge me including installation!
@Cisco - whats the number for Scion Corp? I wanna call them and see if there is anything they are willing to do.

I called Scion Corp and since I bought my car in Hawaii there is nothing they can do. Apparently all new Scion sold in Hawaii are through Servco and they are completely separate then the rest of the country.
Anyway good news I found out that I have some extended warranties that i purchased when i got the car so I'm taking it back in and it should be covered, just have to pay my $100 deductible.

This reminds me of a story I heard many years ago. Some rich guy took his Rolls Royce to Africa and while there the rear differential went bad. Rolls Royce flew a team of mechanics over to fix the car and return the failed rear diff to England to figure out why it failed.
We don't own Rolls Royces people...

Servco has nothing to with Scion Corp... Servco doesnt purchase there scions though Scion Corp.. They are the only ones in the USA to purchase straight through Toyota.
Andrew check your insurance... most of the time if you have full coverage they added the repair side with out telling you.
Mine been having the issue .. it was the first to bought in Hawaii.. I threw my scanner on and told me Coil pack 1 was bad.. so I take Coil pack 4 and swap it with one. and it been running fine ever since.
The other day clydes XB got the same bug he is still waiting to take it in. As more and more 08s get older it will have this same issue. Im still stuck on its not the coil pack.. it the service bulleten about the wair harness issue.
Andrew maybe we should swap yours and clydes coil packs .. and see what happens..

so i got it covered under insurance but they wouldnt do what the TSB said, they only replaced the defective coils, 1 and 2. kind of a pain cause its only a matter of time before the other two will go bad and i have to pay $100 deductible again. nice to have my car running again though. feels good.

You can't really blame them for not replacing good coils because they might fail someday. I have the same coils with 48k miles on them. Glad you got it fixed and I hope you don't have any more problems with the coils.
