Because if it is like a Honda, it comes with s special oil that is a break-in oil which is ment to be left in the engine for 3 to 5K. As for wondering about metal bits in the oil, that is what the oil filter will filter out.

No engine is filled with "special" break in oil ... Hondas are filled with Honda 5w20 from the Factory ... The only think "special" about the Honda oil is that is made by Mobil to meet the Honda spec ...

"The factory-fill oil has special additives, so it should be left in the engine until the first oil change: 7500 miles, under 'Normal Conditions'"

yeah too bad i had a civic and my brother did as well.. i didn't listen to the whole "keep it in longer" song from honda.. changed my oil earlier and more frequently..my engine lasted longer than my brother's civic, he did the normal schedule of waiting and his engine was doing bad things where mine wasn't... so i don't listen to much of what honda says anymore since the company is more about sales now than engineering. so who cares what honda does :)

I'll listen to toyota and they have no problem in doing the oil change early.. they've admitted that it's regular mobil 5w-30 oil (to toyota specs).. so hey not worried.. it's toyota

Toyota doesn't have any special additives like hondas. Just change it.

I've heard about the break in oil also. They say because the oils used today are of such a high quality the engine will not break in properly with a standard oil, so they use a lower grade oil for the break in period. But, i have also heard from a friend who bought a lightning, which btw is supercharged from the factory if you didn't know, that they recommend changing at 5000 miles for the break in period. Both could be true, from what i remember the standard break in period was 500-1000 miles and the oil change was every 3000, so maybe they use high quality oil but have you leave it in longer to break it in properly. The main thing is to change the oil, synthetic or not every 3000 miles. In my opinion cheap or expensive, oil is oil. Company's have to sell a product that works. My friends and i have used cheap oil, with the right certifications , on everything from stock cars to custom turbo setups. If the car was run hard(drift, drag, autox or race in general) then you change the plugs and oil earlier. It can get expensive but it will never hurt to do so. I would follow the factory recommendations on break in, then chage at my own intervals, but never go over 3000mi. make sure it is api service catagory sj,sl. Btw, on this brand of cheap oil we used to use all the time, the address was the same as a high end brands address, and we found out they were made by the same company.

I am sure that oil change habits were a factor, but you can't tell how big of a factor it was based on that alone. there are just too many variables involved(i.e. driving styles) in the wear of a motor to say that was a direct result of your oil changes. but i can appreciate the fact that you take care of the car. i tell peeps all the time, (if the car was $20,000) "would you leave $20,000 in cash to sit out, get crapped on by birds and covered in dirt? then why do that to your car.....

My first oil change was at 200 ( give or take a few miles ) and then at 1200. 6k miles from there. No problems as of yet, my box runs like a top.

^^^ Same here on tC: first change at 200, then 1200, now every 5K. Too early to tell, but so far 8 months - not a hiccup.
