I've never heard of replacing these during pad changes. If it's really necessary, that's good to know.

I've got 65K miles on mine and the calipers have been disassembled/reassembled twice.

A good set of pads come with the new bolts , you use the old one to pull the rotors off .And you should always change out the hardware when doing the brakes , saves you from this problem.

this exact thing happened not to long ago on my tC
i was driving downy he interstate doing about 70mph and when i went to slow down i hit my brakes and the top caliper bolt had broken and when i braked the caliper must of fell forward into my wheel and got jammed so it shattered the inside of my rim and caused me to lose most of my braking system.

give you a little bit of a idea of how it broke my wheel

Those 14 mm bolts are only suppose to be torqued to 25 ft/lbs.
I've changed my pads more then 4 times without ever replacing any bolts.

Failure on torqueing the bolt down to spec.
