View Full Version : HVAC Removal for LED swap???? scionchicop 08-07-2011, 02:07 PM For those who have done this, can you post a DIY? jtk2 08-07-2011, 03:40 PM pull!!! haha. i dont feel like taking my car apart again right now so ill just try and eplain best way i can. 1. pull radio/clock piece 2. pull..on the right side of your shifter piece out. 3. i have an auto so need to unscrew the shift knob 4. pull the shifter piece out. 5. theres a small peice between the radio and the steering wheel..pull that out. 6. then pull out hvac controls 7. unhook! the leds that are in it. are going to be a 5mm twist http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/ee468/love_j1/NEO4-x.jpg and the other one is going to be a 3mm led. that you have to solder http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/ee468/love_j1/3mm_standard2_10.jpg scionchicop 08-15-2011, 11:17 AM thanks for the help. I figured it out and wasn't bad at all. Anyone on here care to take on the soldering part of the swap for me??? I'll ship the controls and pay you! Unless someone does a DIY for this, i'd have no clue how to take off the led's that are soldered on let alone put the resistors that are needed. PM me if u want to make some money! jtk2 08-15-2011, 02:28 PM make that double for me on the soldering part!!!! lol and i found out after ordering the 3mm and the 5mm twist leds and neither of them working. your going to need the 4mm twist leds. scionchicop 08-15-2011, 09:32 PM make that double for me on the soldering part!!!! lol and i found out after ordering the 3mm and the 5mm twist leds and neither of them working. your going to need the 4mm twist leds. Are you serious?! I just ordered the 5mm twist led's since I figured I could do that on my own. You sure they don't fit? Dam262a 08-15-2011, 10:50 PM either 3,4 or 5mm led's this looks so much easier then the tC 1st gen Surface mount led's http://www.oznium.com/product_photos/large/3528.jpg just a fyi that's 5 single leds..try soldering those lol! jtk2 08-15-2011, 11:18 PM Are you serious?! I just ordered the 5mm twist led's since I figured I could do that on my own. You sure they don't fit? yea sorry.. i ordered the 3mm thinking it would work and they were too small. so i compared the stock vs the 5mm and it looked about the same ( they both had the flat head. ) and tried it out. and it was too big. so i just bought the 4mm and will take apart my controls for the 3rd time and hopefully it works! and believe me i tried making that 5mm work because i didnt want to buy another set of these things. and its just too big. scionchicop 08-15-2011, 11:51 PM Where did u order from? I ordered from superbrightleds.com jtk2 08-16-2011, 12:06 AM same here. ( looking to paint them ) jtk2 01-31-2012, 11:59 PM You will have to remove the whole thing. To where you have the 3 knobs separated by themselves. Them you can see how they come off. But when taking them off be very careful that you put them back exactly where they were Errikos 02-01-2012, 01:36 AM You will have to remove the whole thing. I helped Ultimaniac with his blue led swap. He should have some pics. And kidjustin has some pics in his thread. I do have some pics of my purple led swap but I'm on my phone. I do have some pics of my purple led swap but I'm on my phone. link in sig for pictures TheYota 03-04-2012, 06:29 AM How many of those leds are needed in the wedge format? And which size on the twist? There seemed to be some confusion To which controls do the leds go to? Meaning do the wedge bulbs light up the actual knob controls? And the solder leds power the AC button etc? Vica versa? KidJustin 03-04-2012, 08:55 AM HVAC control backlight wedge 4mm - twist HVAC control button 3mm led - solder both are 1 each per knob TheYota 03-04-2012, 09:57 AM Kidjustin, I figured that's how the setup was. Has anyone done the radio yet ? That seems to the last leg of the led swap. I've only seen cluster and hvac in my first few days of going through SL. KidJustin 03-04-2012, 06:00 PM What do u mean by the radio? To be honest, go check out yuriy's sig (scion202) those are all the main guys with threads on their cars. Check their page 1s and u will see a lot of mods. Many might be ones ur looking for jtk2 03-05-2012, 03:36 PM No nobody has done the radio yet. I was debating on it. But the guy that does my led swaps he said those are a pain in the.... Because the LEDs in there are smaller than the ones in the cluster. I think there 0803.. But dOnt quote me on that one. So in simple words it can be done. Nobody has done it on a tc2 but I've seen it on a tc1 and there a ----- to do. TheYota 03-07-2012, 07:59 AM I figured as much, I'm just ocd about color flow etc. So I've held back on swapping leds yet as to not clash. I've done plenty of soldering but never on a circuit board so this will be a first. I'll leave the radio to an expert lol. Thanks for your response Kid Justin, I ended up reading that entire kids thread after u posted the link lol. I did get lots of ideas so thank u!!:-) MightyP 03-07-2012, 12:01 PM Do we need a resistor for the 3mm LED? I can solder, but have never added a resistor. KidJustin 03-07-2012, 03:45 PM when i did my LED swap - no resistors though i haven't done the gauge cluster yet -scared- but id assume they dont need it either |
