Alright guys... its been awhile since any new information surfaced on this shifter so I got some new information...

Our prototype shifter is here now and since our car will not be here till April 2nd or so... We are sending the shifter to one of our customers to test. However I am very confident that this will fit with no issues with the installation instructions we have.

Finally... the Pricing... pending the fitment, the item will be introduced at $89 shipped for the first 50 shifters. Estimated ship date is April 30th and we will begin taking pre-orders as soon as I confirm this week that this shifter fits.

how much shorter is the throw, and how much lower will the shift knob sit? Did you guys make it a little taller than the TWM shifter?

Unfortunately I couldnt wait any longer and I already bought and installed my TWM. I was all set to buy from you when you originally mentioned a $79 shipped price (including a knob) and a delivery date in Febuary, but as the time passed I just couldnt wait any longer. Im glad too since a May delivery date is too far away still in my opinion. Im sure your shifter will be nice, but in the end it only cost me $35 more for the real TWM, and I love it.

What about the quality? I'm not pulling apart my shifter to put in some bad ripoff... but then again, the one I want someone to make a copy of is the TRD - I don't want one where the shifter sits so low and looks all funny... just my feelings about it. Lots of people seem to like it low, but not me.

the B&M one sits almost the same height as the stock shifter, and the throws are much shorter

We will have more information on the shifter once the item is installed and tested. We are doing our own R&D...

Funny thing is... thanks to some posts on here... guess who called this morning... TWM hahaha

Do these guys think they are the only ones that can design a shifter these days? Please... so TWM if you are reading this post, which I am sure you are... READ more before calling and harassing myself and my company.

Wow, didnt mean to cause a stir if my post was responsible. I was just under the impression from reading posts elsewhere that this was the case with this shifter. After checking this is really all I found from creativecompacts directly:
I am currently having produced a t-304 Stainless steel short shifter with the same or very close to similar specs as the TWM Shifter.

I know you guys are a good reputable company and I was really looking forward to ordering my shifter from you, I just got too impatient, lol. Do you have the final details of the shift height reduction and throw percent reduction?

CreativeCompacts
03-22-2005, 07:31 PM
Our shifter was produced to similar specs... In all honestly, there isn't many ways you can change a shifter! We have fired off our sample shifter to a test car and the testing should be completed by the weekend. We will also be probably including in our kit risers to bring the entire shift assembly up about 1/2 inch. If we need to make the shifter longer, that is simple to do and it will be done before production.

Thanks
James

Can you explain that part for me, if you include the risers can you install it without them, so the shifter is still short, because i dont want it to be 1/2" longer i want it short!

At this time I am happy to announce the shifter went in flawlessly as planned. The shifter was sent to another Scion Life member whom I have personally not met so we could get some unbiased opinions on the shifter. He will be making a post shortly. It got too late tonight to get the images of the shifter installed but we should have those tomorrow. Risers were shipped with the kit, however they haven't been installed and should have more information on those early next week. If all goes well.. we should be able to start taking preorders on Monday for $89 a shifter :) No 5% discount on that price BTW LOL

Thanks

First, I want to say thanks to James for letting me be the guinea pig on this. It is much appreciated.

The install was *very* easy. I used the howto write up for the twm shifter (http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=36452&highlight=twm+shift+install)
so thanks to cad455 for supplying that! The entire install took 75 minutes.

This kit dramatically improves the "sloppy" feel of the stock setup. the CC kit makes the shifts feel very crisp and clean, even much nicer than my sister's IS300. Additionally, the height has been reduced to an excellent level: short enough to fix the awkward look of the stock shifter height, yet not so much that it prevents resting your shift arm on the center console as you shift.

Other things I would liek to mention: James was kind enuff the include a spare part for the retaining ring that most people are splicing off with a dremel. I really can't stress how impressed I am with the build quality of the kit, the ease of installation, and of course the performance of the kit. Excellent work James!

I would *definitely* recommend this setup for look/feel, as well as ease of installation. For any of the local Mid Atl people that want to check it out, lemme know, I'll be happy to let you take a look/feel. I'll also be at the BBQ on the 17th, and possible at MIR on April 1st.

Thanks again James for all the effort you put into this.
Dave

Did you shorten the stock shift boot? Do they include another one? Is there a non-destructive way to do this or did you just cut it?

toastbox

Did you shorten the stock shift boot? Do they include another one? Is there a non-destructive way to do this or did you just cut it?

Short answer to your question: No, that is the stock boot. The prototype James sent me did not include another one, nor would I expect him to.

Long asnwer: The TWM install link (included earlier in this thread on one of my postings) shows how to clean up the excess slack, in a "non-destructive" manner, as you put it :)

Basically what it amounts to is folding the excess height downwards (towards the drive train). This gets the excess material out of the way, you don't have to cut anything, and if you want to go back to the stock linkage for some reason, it preserves the original integrtity of the boot.

04-01-2005, 04:27 PM
I thought that I'd heard you could do that somewhere. Sounds good. I'm coming around to this short shifter idea... maybe when I see him actually shipping them and people saying they like them I'll be more into it.

when is the release date? ive been wanting to get a SS for months now but i cant decide to get the twm cuz its too low... i think this one is the best choice...

i dont know if you saw pictures in this thread, or have read any of it, but i thought this shifter was a replicate of the twm, height, length, shift throw, etc. in the last page people were talking about how to customize the boot. even if its low, you should still consider it. the price tag is great. but yes...when is it coming out?

2azfe
04-04-2005, 06:15 PM
read again... yes it says that it is a replica but not exactly the same as twm... i think the difference is the overall height... twm's is shorter... but his one is a bit higher... this is based on what i've read so correct me if im wrong... as far as im concerned, i will be getting a SS ASAP! hmmm... wonder how high is B&M's SS? anyone got a pic of theirs???

04-04-2005, 09:07 PM

Dear Customer:
I would like to take the personal opportunity to thank you for
pre-ordering our company's Short Shifter for the 2005 Scion tC. Our company
is working directly with Scion as well as many lead manufacturers to have
parts both you and I crave for our vehicles. We look forward to serving you
in the future for your scion needs.
However at this time I have to send this e-mail with a bit of bad news. We
have experienced a delay from our Private manufacturer in the production of
the Short Shifters. We ordered 300 Short Shifters for stock on April 2,
2005 which the promise from the manufacturer they would be here between May
1-May 15th, as promoted on several online forums. On April 29th, 2005 we
touched base with our manufacturer to check on the status. At this time we
have been informed that the shifters will not be done production till May
15th-May 17th and we will not have the shifters in hand till at the best,
first week of June. At the best, its still a 15day delay. We are working
very hard to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible, however we are
limited to the manufacturers capabilities. I am aware that many of you have
been waiting since April 5th, 2005. I do not like to keep people waiting if
I can help it and in this situation I can not. So if you would not like to
wait for our shifter, we will be offering 100% refunds to those customers.
Simply respond to this e-mail with your order number and the credit will be
issued. At this time the preorder price is $89 and will change on May 15th,
2005. We look forward to serving you with a quality product very soon,
however if you cannot wait, just let us know.

Guys sorry it came to this... but when you tell a manufacturer you want 300 versus 100, they freak out and backup stuff it looks like. I doubt anything will come in before June. I AM in the same boat as all of you who have pre-ordered cause I am still at Stock height as well and refuse to pay double for TWM. So if you are waiting, and can continue to wait, thank you. We have received a few requests for refunds and they are being processed back, however the preorder price will not be offered to those customers at a later date. We will give 100% refund so if you are in VA, you will be refunded the 5% sales tax... We are not here to take your money!

Our company will gladly refund your money if you are unhappy with our service. At this time we have given the estimated date of around June 1st and we have been swamped with phone calls and e-mails (not to mention PMs) as to why they haven't gotten their shifters. Sorry guys but I can't speed up the date and as of today, its still only May 23rd.

For the past week, we have been doing updrades on our phone system to better serve the customer. In addition to the phone lines, we have also been away at the SEMA IAS Show and finishing up all the legal papers on our new shop location in Virginia. If you need to cancel an order, e-mail me at sales@creativecompacts.com and I will issue the refund to your card or paypal. Make sure you include your order number, last name on the order and what you are cancelling on the order.

Thanks
James

Unless DHL messes up our shipment, 30 intakes will be here on friday and for those who were the first 30, your intakes will be to you on MONDAY and tracking numbers will be forwarded by E-mail when your order ships. I do not have the list at this time, its at the warehouse being prepared for shipments so please refrain from using every contact method possible to ask if your shifter is on the list of 30... We are doing our best but we are getting about 100 PMs, AIMs, E-mails and phone calls every day... Thanks for being patient, but please wait till friday evening for tracking. The rest of the shifter orders will be shipping out later this month when our final shipment of 270 arrive

What tools do you need in order to install the SS. I thought that it was just a simple rip apart the console, take out the stock shifter, then put in the SS and put back together the console. (of course I left out the details but i didn't think that any tools were needed).

nothing elaborate. a socket set to remove the mounting bolts, and then a screw driver or other prying tools for one of the retaining washers.

Some people here are being childish.

It is not the fault of CC that the manufacturer didnt do what they said they would. Im sure CC is doing all they can to get us the shifters ASAP. Harassing them with emails and phone calls isnt going to do a thing but ____ them off and make them think twice about preordering their products in the future.

Leave them alone, they didnt forget about you, it just takes time.

The installation was not that difficult!!! Believe or not, the most time consuming part was to put back the clip at the bottom of the shifter... (too small to manipulate well). My advice would be DO NOT take the whole clip out, instead just pop one of the side out and then take the shifter out. This way you don't have to mess with it ! Still, I have those purple disks !!! Where do I use them ??? :nope:

toastbox
06-13-2005, 09:07 PM
you use the purple disks on the underside of the white cage (as a spacer between the cage and te body of the car). The disks act as a "riser" for the cage, bringing the whole cage up about 1/2 an inch. I didn't use them. I did the install with both the risers in, and out, and felt that it looked/felt nicer with the risers out.

maximus96
06-13-2005, 09:22 PM
so how long did the installing take? did you have to dremel out the clip like the instruction said on the TWM shifter?

ZaZaTc
06-13-2005, 10:38 PM
The whole installation only took 45m but i took the bottom clip out and putting it back took me 30 MINUTES (it's small, it was hot and i had big fingers )!!! So, my advice is to leave the clip as it is and just pop one side out and take the shifter out. (SEE TWM shifter installation @ tech section for details).

I might not be the right person to answer this, since I got the guinea pig kit, but what james sent me was:

Shifter, knob, risers (the purple things), two retainer washers (speed nuts), and the linkage removal tool thingy.

From what it sounds like, that is what others will be getting.

So I take it it no longer has the "sushi knife cutting through cooked fish" feel?

People normally describe it like cutting through warm butter but I felt it was more precise than that but it definitely had the same ease.

Would you describe it more as throwing short power punches?

maximus96

i just put mine in. the throws are definately shorter and stiffer. whole install took about 35 minutes. the longest part was taking the white piece that sat ontop of the shifter out. took alot of prying to get the damn thing off. but after that it was pretty straight forward.

Per one of my posts above, the risers go under the white cage/base, between the body of the car, and the cage.

Instructions are as follows:

There are four bolts that secore the cage to the body of the car, remove those bolts, and the black rubber thingy's inside the four holes. Insert the purple risers, secure the cage to the body using the four replacement bolts/washers CC supplied.

That is what I thought, but I wasn't sure because these bolts are not removed during the install of the TWM shifter, correct? And do you put the black rubber thingy's back in as well? I will be installing mine tonight or tomorrow, depending on when I get my kids to bed.

toastbox
06-14-2005, 06:44 PM
True, following the TWM install, those bolts are not removed. I can't remember for sure if the rubber thingy's are installed in conjection with the purple thingys (I know you all love my highly technical terms here, lol!!) but IIRC, you *can't* use them both, so the rubber grommets are left out. You'll be able to tell for sure when you are taking it apart, it'll be readiy apparent if the require removal or not.

a dremel is not necessary, but a lot faster. i used a strong thin knife and tapped the end with a small hammer. it will wedge right in there. after that however, was harder to get off. you have to pry and bend the clip slightly. i didnt want to use too much leverage on the shifter cage, in fear of breaking it so i had to basically chisel through that clip with a hammer and flathead screwdriver. once you chisel adjacent (downward) the clip, it just breaks off. i think this is the easiest way to get it off.

yea it was very easy with the dremel. i tried to be careful and block the sparks from hitting everything.

The first one you posted is a 2 pounder...thats pretty heavy!
I'm using the IS300 knob...looks similar to the second one, but isn't weighted.

i was wondering if the risers will change the shifting... why are they there if we don't need them.. do they rise the whole assembly to make it easier to reach and still make the shift shorter???

Just so there is no surprise...

I just checked the list of Pre-orders... Looks like there is 34 still on the list... I have 20 more shifters arriving on Friday... So that will leave 14 shifters still pending for later this month. To those 14 individuals, I am very sorry. However I am in the same boat as you since I too still do not have a short shifter in the company car. We will not install our short shifter till all customers orders are fulfilled. Please refrain from asking if you are on the last 14 till after friday when I submit the 20 for shipment. If you don't get an e-mail on Friday, you are probably the last batch of 14. Again thanks for your patience.

Thanks
James

Sweet. I dont' think I understand where those risers are supposed to go. Has CC posted any instructions yet that show the risers in place?

Per one of my posts above, the risers go under the white cage/base, between the body of the car, and the cage.

Instructions are as follows:

There are four bolts that secore the cage to the body of the car, remove those bolts, and the black rubber thingy's inside the four holes. Insert the purple risers, secure the cage to the body using the four replacement bolts/washers CC supplied.
That is what I thought, but I wasn't sure because these bolts are not removed during the install of the TWM shifter, correct? And do you put the black rubber thingy's back in as well? I will be installing mine tonight or tomorrow, depending on when I get my kids to bed.

when you install the purple risers. take out the stock urethane mounts and inner bushings on the 4 corners of the cage. they should pop out easily wihtout any tools. when installing the shifter make sure that you have some grease on hand, to lube up the center balljoint. i believe the stock rubber mounts are there to help from vibrations. but the purple ones will give a more precise feeling.

First of all: 45 MINUTES MY A$$!
It took me a good 2 and a half hours and I cut my knuckle open 3 times trying to get those 2 black clips off the cage wich I did not see in any pictures of the TWM install! I even used the dremel on the little side clip (which worked great). I had such a pain getting the round white plastic peice up, and putting it back on enough to get those 2 black clips back on. I used a hammer!
Oh, and when they say to use that silver disk to get that white plastic cup off the old shifter and to pull for all your life? Well, all you have to do is hold it like in the picture, between your feet, but instead of pulling up, just bend the shifter down between your legs. It pops right out with zero effort.
I'd rather install my front Hotchkis sway again then do this again! At least with that, it's just bolts. I can't handle prying clips, tweaking plastic rings and hammering crap down. It's just sketchy.

Anyway, back to the purple risers. The only thing I took out was the old bolts. I left everything else in, and I dont' think I like it to much. It seams to be up just a little to high, and is putting preasure on the 2 cables up front, making it feel a little strained. The only thing I saw in there were those black rubber things on each corner. Is there something else I'm supposed to pop out? do they just come out of the top? are they just under the black rubber things? I need to take it appart tonight anyway because I made my shift boot to short and it's pulling the back in 1st and 5th. I was going to just try without the purple spacers, but I'll try it without the eurathane mounts if I can find them.

toastbox

the black rubber things on all four corners are what we were referring to. Since you left yours in, all you need do is remove the risers, and reinstall the stock bolts.

chicago_guy mentioned taking out the stock urethane mounts and the inner bushings. Are these not 2 seperate things? I think the shifter is a tad to high with the risers, but I'm afraid it might be too low without them. If the risers slip in a little more, that would be great. Otherwise, I'll take them out and get a slightly longer Sparco shift knob.
Oh, and that stock shift knob is a lot heavier then I expected.

Honestly, it was about two months ago or so when I got mine, so I really can't 100% remember what was there, but I don't recall any urethane bushing AND black grommets, only the black grommets.

here is a picture for reference from another thread.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/short_shift_xb/core-07.jpg
you can see 4 rubber bushings, which are the mounts. and if you look inside you will see the metal couplers or whatever they are called. first push the metal one out, then with your fingers squeeze the rubber ones and push them out.

hope this helps.
one more thing. make sure you lube up that ball joint before installing the white plastic cap

I had the clips as well. They were a total pain to put back in.
So, I pusht the metal and the rubber through the bottom, and then leave them both out if I'm going to use the purple ones that came with the shifter? I'll try that when I get off work.

how come you guys didn't reuse the 2 clips for the white piece? i thought scion specifically put it there to reduce rattle and vibration. in the TSB for shifter rattle, its only for the first couple batches since they solved the problem with the clips for the later ones. i had a hell of a time putting those clips back in. basically i put a screw driver under the top hook and pulled up real hard to get it to hook just a bit on the white plastic, then tapped it with a hammer to clip it in place. now i'd have to do it again to regrease the ball =(

That's about how i did it, except I angled the flat head under the clip and over the plastic peice so that when I hammered it, it would guide the clip over the plastic piece.

But oh my, what a differece those spacers make when installed properly. Thanks for the diagram, chicago_guy, of how to get the metal and rubber pieces out. It sits perfectly now! I love it! Stiffer, clickier, more solid, more precise, and deffinatley shorter throws.

Maximus96:
I dont' think the TWM comes with the spacers. Other then that, they are pretty identical, I think. It's great that Creative Compacts gives you the option of haveing the exact same throws, but having the stick a little higher or not. I definately like it better with the purple risors in. Plus, since you take the ruber ones out, it gives it a more solid, less mushy feel. Plus, isnt' it cheaper?

it definately takes more effort for me to shift compare to stock. but each shift feels more solid. i wonder if its because the stock knob. i also wonder how much difference a weighted knob will make. hopefully we get the included knob soon and i'll decide then whether to get another knob.

It definatley takes some more muscle. But alot less then when you have to many spacers in there! But yeah, you have to remember, that not only is the stick shorter, but the pivot point was changed, so we can assume it would take more effort. I bet even the TRD shifter takes a little more effort. It feels alot more like my buddies camero now. Kinda odd feeling for a small, Japanese 4 banger, but I'll get used to it. It's only been a week. But it does feel alot less sloppy.

ZaZaTc:
If you didnt' like the way it felt with the purple discs in (as long as you took the metal and ruber fillers out) then you're probably not going to like it. It brings the entire shifter up about half an inch, but it also takes some of the squishyness out of the engagements of the gears because those rubber bushings are removed. It's a little rougher, but the gears feel more connected to me. Try it both ways. It only takes 15 minutes or so to take the entire center console out and replace the bolts.

what kind of grease or lube do ya'll use???? I was thinking white lithium grease.. but if ya'll know anything better... plus I like the height that the shifter is at now, but if the risers make the shifter feel more solid don't you think if cc came out with rises but a little bit less than the current ones would be better??? I would pay for those...

Is the extra effort purely because of the shortened lever effect?

IE takes more energy to get more work done in less time? Or is there something about housing or the pivot joints that cause the shifter to be stiffer?

I think I'll have to look someone up in SoCal with one and feel it for myself.

If it's a bit stiffer I fear driving in traffic will suck royally whilst giving a very good work out. My problem with this is that my arms look better together if they're the same size...

Someone should make a telescoping shifter!

Yes.
It's not rediculously more difficult, just more. Not any more then some other sports cars that already have shorter throw shifters then ours.
