Someone PM'd me wanting info on how I blacked out my emblems, and I thought I would share with everyone...here it is
_______________________________________________________________________

It wasn't hard, just time consuming. It takes about 2 days to do.

Supplies used:
1 Can of Duplicolor spray Adhesion Promoter
1 Can Duplicolor Automotive spray paint (color is your preference)
1 Can Duplicolor Automotive Gloss Clearcoat
1 Roll 3M Double-Sided Adhesive Tape
1 Bottle of Rubbing Alcohol

Day 1:

Removed emblems and set up shop in a well ventilated area.

Cleaned the emblems really good with alcohol and removed all adhesive.

Sprayed 2-3 light coats of Adhesion Promoter on emblems. Patience is key.

Once dried sprayed 5-6 coats of Nighthawk Black Metallic paint on emblems. Again Patience is key, do light even coats each time, you don't want the paint to run.

Once dried sprayed 6 coats of Gloss Clearcoat on emblems. Patience, Patience, Patience.

Let dry and harden overnight.

Day 2:

Attached 3M doublesided adhesive tape to emblems.

Reinstalled emblems.

I used Nighthawk Black Metallic and it has a dark blue-black tint to it when light reflects off of it. It's real subtle and only shows up in direct light at certain angles. The rest of the time it looks black metallic.

I did the front and rear emblems.

how much did this cost you?

wyldkard
03-23-2005, 07:36 PM
$1.50 for the tape
$2.50 for Adhesion Promoter
$2.50 for Clear Coat
$3.00 for Paint

Around $10 after tax. I had the rubbing alcohol around the apartment. The Adhesion Promoter and Clear Coat I had from another mod too, so those prices may not be accurate. But it's a fairly cheap mod.

I was very careful in heating the emblems and prying them off by cutting a little of the adhesive and pulling it off by hand. The front is easier than the rear.

Wal-Mart, AutoZone, PepBoys, take your pick on finding the paint.

Looks good! Added it to the Tech section. I'll move the thread to the FAQ section in a week or so.

The rear tC emblem is depressed into it. It's a lot harder than it was debadging my xB back in the day. I didn't even heat it either, it was around 88 outside and after sitting in the sun all day they were easy to remove. The front I pulled off with my hand, the same as the "tC" emblem. The rear took some finesse.

I put the heating in there for people who don't live in warm areas. Anyways, removing the emblems isn't the point of this thread...there are many different ways to remove them, just be careful when doing so.

So both the front and rear "Scion" emblems are stuck on with adhesive? No posts or clips or anything? I know the "tC" emblem is adhered to the body.

both front and rear have two small posts..makes it easy when you put them back on..

i did this over the weekend and i must say it looks phenomenal..i have a black cherry xB and i did the badges a color a little bit darker and i cant believe the difference it makes..and i did it all for around $13...only think i did different was use the 3M emblem adhesive vs. the double sided tape..highly recommended though for anyone who is looking for cheap yet effective mods..

i did the front of mine Superwhite to match the car and Black lettering....now im just trying to find the best way to get the rear emblem off without scratching or breaking.

Here 'tis. My job wasn't too professional, but it looks good from here. Yes, I know it needs a bath. Taillights are going to be smoked out in a week or so. Hopefully... Probably blue overlays on the front.

If I have RS 1.0 tc (RED), what color do you think is best for the back emblem? Red?

This is great! I plan on throwing gunmetal/dark metal wheels on my car, I may paint the Scion emblem to complement them. Thanks!

What was used to paint the emblems? Can someone please specify. There is no original tech write up here. I want to do it, but I need to knw the supplies I need. Do I prime it, what kind of paint is needed, do I need to sand the emblems? Someone please help. I know it isn't hard to do, but I don't want to do it wrong and have the paint chipping off the emblem.
