View Full Version : November, Guy Fawkes Challenge! Jasper Ash 11-07-2011, 09:24 PM Here's my first photo for this month's challenge. Everyone else, post them up! http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6112/6323421815_0d1f50fa39_z.jpg Jon 11-07-2011, 11:12 PM I can already tell this is going to be fun lol. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6116/6324264596_eb248ac75b_z.jpg Jasper Ash 11-07-2011, 11:38 PM ^ Nice. Love how simple it is and how good the masks looks combined with a hoodie. Did you use two speedlights for that? Almost looks like one is placed behind you at your feet on a low power setting. Jon 11-08-2011, 12:05 AM Yeah the hoodie sets it off. If I didn't already have that one I was gonna go buy one lol. I only used one flash mounted on the shoe. Bounced it off the ceiling at maybe 70*. It lights up the wall like that every time I take a pic with it as the backdrop. Plus the vignette enhances and rounds the light behind me. Jasper Ash 11-08-2011, 12:35 AM Dope. Brb going to get a hoodie. Jon 11-08-2011, 12:53 AM Haha it's a must! speedy000 11-08-2011, 04:19 AM  dope! but im sad i paid for over night shipping and u guys still got yours before me! fml lol. oh well Jon 11-08-2011, 04:35 AM Lol if you ordered from the same place we did, it's real sad considering they came from Austin, TX haha. speedy000 11-08-2011, 04:59 AM no i got mine on amazon :( as a prime member i get super cheap over night shipping but apparently it doesnt apply when the seller is dirt slow. didnt even think to check ebay lol speedy000 11-09-2011, 03:02 AM just got my mask today had a little fun http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6103/6328054030_0ff3aacdf2.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/speedy000/6328054030/) wreckless driving with a smile :D http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6049/6327305207_50c06404f7.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/speedy000/6327305207/) speedy000 11-09-2011, 07:41 PM first two were easy using a model to wear the mask...the self portrait proved to be more of a challenge. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6094/6329295631_fedf622e38.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/speedy000/6329295631/) Jon 11-09-2011, 07:43 PM I like the purple background and the way it's lit. What lens? speedy000 11-09-2011, 07:51 PM lulz i went crazy last summer and painted my walls purple left the ceiling white. i bounced my flash off the ceiling creating the blacked out eyes and the white spot behind me. the lens was the 18-105mm kit lens set at 18mm set as low as the tripod went Jasper Ash 11-09-2011, 08:24 PM ^ Love that photo, speedy. Very nice. Jasper Ash 11-09-2011, 09:12 PM http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6091/6329531823_59fcfc4826_z.jpg Jon 11-09-2011, 09:24 PM Haha the glasses are a nice touch. Nice shot. speedy000 11-09-2011, 09:52 PM lol dude the glasses totally make this shot 8). im trying to convince my self that asking a professor to pose before class with the mask on in a lecture hall would be a good idea. then again the hard part would be to convince the professor :tap: Jasper Ash 11-09-2011, 10:58 PM Thanks. Thought the glasses would add something to it. Going to take a hipster shot with my Raybans on next. Speedy, the hard part is asking the professor, IMO. speedy000 11-09-2011, 11:11 PM my next shot is going to be alot of fun have to prep for it this weekend it will take alot of begging and pleading Jon 11-09-2011, 11:37 PM http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6042/6329865301_d9069e7d12_z.jpg Jasper Ash 11-09-2011, 11:55 PM ^ Love that. I always love your colors. Even in black and white. Jon 11-10-2011, 12:03 AM Thanks man. The trick with b&w is to edit it as if you were leaving it in color, then put the b&w layer on top. That way the hues and tones will be the way you want it because the colors are interpreted differently from each other when using the PS layer. Jasper Ash 11-10-2011, 05:09 PM Just a quick one I snapped after I woke up. Inspired by your self portrait style shots. I seriously need a speed light for my Canon. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6109/6331790185_6c3298151f_z.jpg Jon 11-10-2011, 08:54 PM ^Nice shot it gives me an idea for one tomorrow but I'm not sure how I'm gonna pull it off. I find these portraits to be easier than normal ones because it takes having to get the right facial expression out of the equation lol. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6060/6332339449_7f75a239b1_z.jpg Jasper Ash 11-10-2011, 08:57 PM Lol Agreed. Don't have to smile or look cool. Mask does all the work. How do you go about focusing when doing timed self portraits? That's my biggest challenge. Since I don't have a remote I find myself placing an object where my face would be and then focusing, then starting the timer. Jon 11-10-2011, 09:01 PM All of mine, with the exception of the one I just posted, have been taken using the remote. I was too lazy to run back upstairs to get it. For the one above I stopped down to f/5.6 to give myself some room to play in the focal plane. I focused on a leaf then went and sat on that leaf lol. speedy000 11-10-2011, 10:22 PM lol remote ftw! got mine for $3 shipped from china with a battery..dono how they manage to sell stuff so cheap and shipped :lalala: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/ml-l3-wireless-ir-remote-control-for-nikon-d90-d80-d70-more-45428 i even got 2 since i knew replacing the battery would cost more than a new one. the camera does a great job auto focusing when u use the remote...assuming your not at f1.8 u should be fine. Jon 11-10-2011, 10:24 PM Wow they even copied the Nikon box lol. Jasper Ash 11-10-2011, 11:53 PM Jon did you use your 35mm 1.8 in that pic above? Jon 11-10-2011, 11:59 PM Nah I used my 50 1.8G. speedy000 11-11-2011, 12:38 AM 50mm ftmfw! Jasper Ash 11-12-2011, 03:21 AM http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6046/6335751183_5fd9e08303_z.jpg mrhat 11-12-2011, 04:43 AM Off to Jasper! http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6106/6335802845_72c1887847_z.jpg Jasper Ash 11-12-2011, 05:30 AM Guy Fawkes @ 200mm..... http://images.icanhascheezburger.com/completestore/2008/9/11/128656193508695106.jpg mrhat 11-12-2011, 03:44 PM wow posted that in the wrong thread lol. Jasper Ash 11-14-2011, 01:05 AM http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6044/6343022904_d503d8778b_z.jpg speedy000 11-14-2011, 06:07 AM lol what if we had a shot of u waxing or drying the car from across the hood to capture more of the mask :D Jasper Ash 11-14-2011, 06:56 PM I like it just the way it is. I think its perfect. I didn't want the focus to be on the mask at all. Just wanted it to be there. Jon 11-14-2011, 07:07 PM I like it because when you do see it it's like "oh snap" rather than forcing you to look at the mask. speedy000 11-14-2011, 07:27 PM when u put it that way, i see where u both r coming from. ive been focusing to much on the actual mask. i want a picture of a large crowd of people and 1 person in the mask. kinda like a spot waldo thing Jasper Ash 11-14-2011, 07:35 PM ^ Exactly! Sid and I were talking and he suggested something similar. I love the idea. Jon 11-17-2011, 04:22 PM I need to take a photo for this today. Just gotta come up with an idea... Jasper Ash 11-17-2011, 06:52 PM ^ Felt the same way. Was at the park and had a buddy wear the mask. I just keep it in the car now just to get pics. For teh lulz http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6218/6354659495_497457ea4d_z.jpg I took this with my new 70-200 f4L. You can't really see the difference, but I snapped a few photos and this thing has great bokeh, even at f5 at 200mm. mrhat 11-17-2011, 09:16 PM Enjoy the lens Jasper. My Sig 50 came in today. Love this lens. Shooting with both I feel like the Sig can almost stand toe to toe with the 1.2L. speedy000 11-18-2011, 03:57 AM difference between what jasper? lol more telephoto more bokeh :D especially when u get closer. have fun with the new lens. Jasper Ash 11-18-2011, 06:30 AM Between the awesomeness that is an L lens. I'm very excited. Roller_Toaster 11-18-2011, 10:25 AM mmm, 70-200. I've been trying to tell myself not to get the new nikkor 70-200, and to save for boost....but....I'd much rather have the lens if I'm honest. I've gotta find one of these masks! Jasper Ash 11-18-2011, 12:55 PM Lenses will hold value better... That's a plus. Jasper Ash 11-20-2011, 08:29 PM C'mon, guys. Only 10 more days left in the Challenge! Moar pics! speedy000 11-21-2011, 04:16 PM november sucks lol its finals and too much school ish. havnt had time to do anything :? but i did order an umbrella kit :D Jon 11-21-2011, 04:16 PM I'll admit I've been slacking. I didn't pick up my camera at all this weekend. Why don't we go until Dec. 7th since that's a full 30 days? Roller_Toaster 11-21-2011, 04:22 PM Bump on crappy school semesters. As soon as this semester is over, I'll be participating in a few of these. Jasper Ash 11-21-2011, 05:13 PM I agree it's been a weird month. But I'll probably use this mask in photos even after the challenge lol Jasper Ash 11-21-2011, 07:08 PM http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6111/6378543849_980f774ddc_z.jpg NYNCTC 11-24-2011, 11:27 PM Finally!
