I've done some searching and haven't really came up with to many DYI's for the lower and I saw people saying you do and you don't.

So to get things clear. Can I safely remove lower grill with out the need to take off front bumper?

My grill's come in today and plan on doing this.

Seems pretty straight on the upper, as in just take it off.
Thanks.

Yes, all you have to do is remove the splash guard from under it and you can get to everything you need that way. That is how I installed both sets of my grilles.

I've got the upper in, piece of cake other than the slight dremel modification that was required for the aftermarket grill, more on that when I'm done.

The lower, got the plastic skid panel off. OK, so onto these wierd clips. I see there are quiet a few, Its a small tab/tongue that is a material of the front bumper that comes through the stock grill slot from behind, and stops just short of the edge of the black plastic stock grill.

I put I screwdriver above, pried and pushed. put a screwdriver below, pried and pushed, both nothing.

So the grill comes out from the back correct(as in, comes push toward the radiator/into the motor) right?

looking at the aftermarket grill it would appear there is a possibility for the grill gripping from the top and the bottom of each tap, not a one sided tab(if that makes since)

So anyway, any tips guys? going to call it a day for now, but now I'm rolling 2 diff types of grills, lol :(

and thanks for the replies.

which grille did you get? and when i replaced mine i tried going from underneath but i wasnt getting anything done that way so i spent the 5 minutes to take off the front bumper and did it that way...much easier.

Take the.bumper off and use needle nose pliers. And yes grill comes out toward the radiator.

OK, OK, I'll take the bumper off. I think they should re-evaluate there hardware. even if its easy to take off, I would think they should make it easy enough, after all its a scion. And they know its a popular appearance mod car.

I got the grills off ebay,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/08-10-Scion-XB-Mesh-Grille-Set-Upper-Lower-ABS-Black-/190541184109?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D4800122847359463051

Quality of item is impressive. Nice thick, very clean and shiny black plastic. as mentioned above I did have to grind some material with a dremmel tool but no big deal, but I would say I was/am a little concerned with the aftermarket grill tabs, one on the right isn't really solid, hard to explain but if there were much more pressure on the clip it will pop out. its working, and it if popped out its not flying off, but it would move just a bit to if you were looking close it would be a little off. I'll post up some pics when she's done, I'm going to try some fogs in the bottom while its apart. So we'll see.

I have that same grill. And yeah, it's easier to put on with the bumper off
