View Full Version : Custom Turbo
yardleyTC 12-12-2011, 12:18 AM im looking into purchasing an CT26 turbo out of an MR2. Does anyone know 100% either way if it can attached to the gen2 tC. Im really interested in doing this build and im just wondering if anyone on this forum has had any contact with anyone who has attempted anything like this!
Thanks
Chris
Voltagedriver 12-12-2011, 01:02 AM Ur in the wrong section, post under forced induction. But why buy an old used turbo for a new car? Not to mention u need a lot more then just the turbo for it to work. Seems to me like u need to do a lot of reading b4 u take any action molding ur car. Also we have a few really nice turbo kits already available for our cars.
biglilsteve 12-12-2011, 01:42 AM He could be looking to save some money. But either way, I would not void my powertrain warranty with a used part.
yardleyTC 12-12-2011, 01:43 AM i put it in this section cause people might stumble upon it as not everyone is in the forced induction section but they still may know about this anyways. In addition i have the full kit down pipe and the full kit. The turbo is brand new and has not even been used in the MR2. it was pulled before it was ever used. also my buddies who own a custom shop have the full capabilities to install this turbo. I just wanted to know if anyone had seen it done before?
In addition its a toyota part and a factory turbo so i will not be boosting heavily it will just add a bit more power. Im also getting it for 200 bucks
biglilsteve 12-12-2011, 01:52 AM Hmmm I'm sure it has not been done before at least on a tc2. I would imagine you would need a large amount of custom fabricated parts to make that Turbo work. And when it is all said and done, the only part you may end up being able to use could just be the turbine itself.
speedy000 12-12-2011, 01:58 AM O_o smh....
yardleyTC 12-12-2011, 02:01 AM ahhhh okay. i was considering doing a build and attacking this head on. the boys said that we would have to a exhaust back but that we should be able to attach it without major problem? i dont know for sure they said its possible and i quote nothing is difficult lol so ill see soon
highvoltage1 12-12-2011, 02:04 AM Whats the specs on it? You could slap many turbos on there but will they work properly for the engine and were you want the power? Thats what you wanna look for. I wouldnt recommend anything less than a 16g but i would say those are best for 200-230whp. Nothing wrong with putting a custom kit together but know what your doing even if a shop is installing it.

isnt the 16g a mitso turbo mainly? and the power will hopefully be mid range pushing no more than 6lbs of boost.
speedy000 12-12-2011, 03:00 AM 16g or bigger....u dont want to choke your motor down with a tiny turbo. as for it being a mitsu turbo it doesnt matter aslong as the turbo manifold u make has a mitsu flange on it. u should read WAY MORE way way way more about forced induction before buying ANYTHING.
draxcaliber 12-12-2011, 03:15 AM dude. you are not ready for a adding a turbo kit to your car. you need to do your homework. seriously.
yardleyTC 12-12-2011, 03:24 AM dude. you are not ready for a adding a turbo kit to your car. you need to do your homework. seriously.
I do and one of the first parts to doing homework is research and I thought I'd ask people who also use the same car! So thanks for your key input. I'm aware obviously of the common turbo appliactions for this car and was wondering if other toyota turbos such as the one I suggested wud be usefull and possible to attach.
ZeroEyeQueue 12-12-2011, 03:32 AM Anything can be done if you have the $$$ and the know-how. In my experience, turbo-on-a-budget isn't easy and can easily go wrong. Just make sure it's done right and doesn't end up costing as much as a kit from PTuning or Descendant, defeating the purpose of saving money.
Blackedout011TC 12-12-2011, 08:03 AM Read Zero's very informative build thread, boosting this car is not cheap or easy even WITH a "bolt on" turbo kit.

yeah, but when you say "I don't want to use a mitsubishi turbo because it is a toyota, like it will make all the difference is absolutely hysterical, and ignorant. even the TRD supercharger isn't made by TRD. Honda doesn't sell any turbo models in the US, but people still put turbos on them, and those turbos aren't made by honda. even Subaru doesn't make its own turbos, they IHI I believe.
TC-Maverick 12-12-2011, 02:28 PM I find people respond better when given Constructive Criticism
OP asks about how advisable or inadvisable it is to use this other turbo. So much "You're doing it wrong"
what about ... "Try this.. or have you thought of this?"
Its unnerving to see ridicule when the guy is obviously trying to learn and accomplish.
We all started out not knowing $#!t.. Let's not do the you need to be This Tall--> to ride routine.
Only requirement is knowledge.. Which he'd have more of if people weren't just stating the obvious that he needs to read more. I mean isn't that what this forum is for? Answers?
Good luck on your budget setup dude..
I myself have very limited knowledge on turbo setups... but if the R&D hasn't been done on something your going for.. I'd suggest you look deep into the areas that could be a conflict with the car..
Like Boost Creep... which may require you to bore out the waste gate or do a bypass system. I'd imagine this to be a problem if the engine in the TC2 is larger than the MR2 as it may put out more exhaust than the turbo was designed to receive.

Thank you for that! and the plan is now to get a buget manifold of ebay and redo the welds and ensure that they will last. i will include a piggy back system and custom exhaust front to bacck. I have been told today i should not cost more than 1500.

i never said i didnt want to use that? i asked if we were on the same page... the 16g is mainly a mitsu turbo... and i double checked.
WellesleyScion 12-12-2011, 05:00 PM Turbo discussions belong in the forced induction section... moved.
talt2008 12-12-2011, 05:06 PM +1 for the OP! hopefully everything works out for you on boosting your ride. keep updates about the build because im interested as to how this will all pan out
danGtc 12-12-2011, 05:52 PM I actually had a 5E-FHE with a ct9 on it (which I eventually upgraded to a td04l). I learned a few things from that experience which may be helpful.
1. The CT turbos are... ok. They are heavy, thrust bearing, and top out around 18 psi. It seems sort of small (It was well matched on the 2.0L MR2).
2. Once they go it's hard to find rebuild kits. Mine died in spectacular form, shooting oil out about three feet in the air from the blow off valve. It was pretty cool. This might be less of an issue on the ct26 as it's more popular stateside
3. The flanges are different from many popular turbos, limiting upgrade/replacement potential
4. Prices on good turbos have dropped a lot, so it's easier to justify spending a little more and getting a solid BB turbo with a popular flange fitting.
All that being said, they are solid turbos with a bit of a following. I probably wouldn't do it, but if you want to go for it :D

Thanks man, as soon as the headers come in from ebay and we redo the welding and that the work will restart can't wait tho for sure.
youngflyer 12-13-2011, 01:42 AM i was unaware that ebay even has a turbo manifolds on there for the GEN2. I didnt think its been out long enough for someone to copy.
danGtc 12-13-2011, 01:44 AM You can always buy a NA header and lop off the flange. It's a bit ghetto and the turbo ends up oddly low, but it works on a budget.
youngflyer 12-13-2011, 02:39 AM Oh god that is very ghetto and sounds like it's more hassle than its worth

heres one.... there are hundreds online
youngflyer 12-13-2011, 04:13 AM Dude that is for a 2az...did you check that the head on the az and the AR are the same
TC-Maverick 12-13-2011, 01:55 PM Dude that is for a 2az...did you check that the head on the az and the AR are the same
its says camry on there.. I thought we have a camry engine.. ?
wiki:
"The AR engine family is a straight-4 piston engine series by Toyota, first introduced in 2008 for the RAV4, and subsequently for the Highlander, Venza, and Camry.
The AR series uses a die-cast aluminium engine block and aluminium DOHC cylinder head. The engine series shares many of the technologies in the AZ engine, while incorporating new features such as continuously variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts or dual VVT-i.....The AR engine replaces the AZ engine."
^^^ I'd be optimistic about this..
Maybe not enough to personally spend the money on a part that may not fit properly.
But, I'd like to think in the transition between these engines Toyota would minimize the number of things they have to change in the production process for cost concerns. So Hopefully the size/shape of the ports as well as bolt pattern and spacing around the exhaust ports are the same..
youngflyer 12-13-2011, 03:06 PM My guess is that we have a completely different head
yardleyTC 12-13-2011, 03:47 PM I've been told it fits.
youngflyer 12-13-2011, 08:37 PM ^ call kareem as descendant motor-sports and ask just to double check. The might also have a turbo manifold for the 2AR that you could purchase...who knows?!?!
GUNNIST14 12-13-2011, 08:43 PM yARDLEY JUST make sure the turbo manifold lines up with the studs and then tighten it down. Make sure there are no clearance issues that would cause exhaust leaks.
On the Ct9 I personally have no experience running lower spec/size turbo's but for the 2AR 2.5 it will need atleast a moderately sized turbo IE. T3/T4 57 trim,16G,Precision 5431 or 3431 and so on. You are definitely acquiring the CT9 at low cost but I wouldn't recommend it. You will hit 6psi far too quick to enjoy boost and end up upgrading anyway.
Just get a 16g or turbo similar and have the ability to go higher if you wish.
Good luck man the 2AR has great potential.
GUNNIST14 12-13-2011, 08:53 PM Just looked at the Greddy blog for there time attack TC and the head does look slightly different to the 2AZ so you might encounter some problems mounting the old 2AZ turbo manifold.
Let us know how it turns out.

He said ct26, a ct9 is tiny.
The head was the main thing that was redesigned in the 11+, getting vvt-i and an acis manifold. I doubt they are the same, but it would be awesome if it is.
yardleyTC 12-13-2011, 09:41 PM Ill let everyone know if it fits when it comes in! If not I have a few days to return it and no harm done!
TC-Maverick 12-13-2011, 09:44 PM ..... awaits results...
yardleyTC 12-14-2011, 04:47 PM placed the order for the headers...due to being in the great white north the shipping will take a while at the holiday season will update upon arival!
Hayseed 12-14-2011, 06:40 PM Why the hell are you ordering headers for a turbo build? This thread is confusing, op has no clue what hes doing

you cant bolt the turbo to the head...
Hayseed 12-14-2011, 07:26 PM Lol. No ____ Sherlock. By definition he'd be buying a turbo manifold. A header and a turbo manifold are two different things.

This.
He's probably going to fit a flange somewhere on the ebay header. Still, if it were me, I'd just call up PTuning or World Motorsports and see if I could purchase their turbo manifold separately. By the time you put the work in to fab one, it might be similar in price.
ZeroEyeQueue 12-14-2011, 08:48 PM Man, you guys are swift on the posts.

Flange? like the one in this picture?

highvoltage1 12-14-2011, 09:46 PM Please OP when ____ hits the fan please dont come on here complaining about your car. We have tried to help. yea a little rudeness may be present but the guys trying to point you in the right direction have seen this a ton and it gets old. You dont boost on a budget. All you newbs posting "go easy and crap on the guy" need to realize your pushing ebay junk and shortcuts and this kids motor is gonna blow or something else. Know what your talking about and not just post encouragement.

This. This this this. Have fun with your Godspeed china charger crap. I would seriously be really wary of that manifold cracking. Not to be rude, but there is a certain level of knowledge required to boost an na car. You ready to invest at least 3-4 thousand dollars into getting the kit running? Money for when it blows up? What management will you be running. What happens when you notice you have boost creep? How do you take care of that? Ready to change your oil at 3k miles at the minimum? Just some things to think about. Boosting requires a lot of research and knowledge.

yardleyTC 12-15-2011, 03:34 PM thanks for everyone's input.
GUNNIST14 12-17-2011, 12:53 AM Agree with Hayspeed-
All endeavors are trial and error. Well then again this should be simple but people have to find there own path all we can do is offer advice.
Ryan5x 12-27-2011, 12:20 AM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ic9Qd-zTsKQ
This guy says he has a custom turbo kit in his tC2. Looks like he parted his together.
bigG2148 12-27-2011, 05:11 AM Yeah its a tteadstone mani
GUNNIST14 01-03-2012, 10:26 PM Well it looks like I'll be eating my words. The old gen log style manifold seems to fit with small modifications.
Some thing to point out though I suggest users here get an aem FIC OR greddy E-ULTIMATE. That apexi SAFC is only good for low boost setups which I think is as much as that car will see being an automatic.
Also the ECU in the 2011 TC seem pretty advanced in that they can compensate and adjust to significant changes in pressure by way of long and short term fuel trims.
tooCrazy88 01-04-2012, 01:27 AM good luck man!!! haha....
yardleyTC 01-04-2012, 04:51 AM i know that it fits. its quite simple and required minor work to get a no leak system. thanks for the input i planned on using the AEM fic. that sounds like the ideal set up.
