OK so some people wanted a walkthrough on this and i took 30minutes outta my sunny day off to take some pics to go along.

so here we go.
here are the Stock bulbs and the LEDs side by side.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/domelight/16.jpg

1: lets start with the front dome. the easy part is popping off the cover. just take a flat head and place it off center about 1 inch to the right. makes it a little easier.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/domelight/2.jpg

2: From here you can see the bulbs.. i already had my LEDs installed so just imagine they are the stock bulbs for the time being.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/domelight/3.jpg

taking them out is easy but be carful not to grip them to hard..they can easily shatter in your hand and make a nice little mess. to take the bulbs out DO NOT twist or turn the bulb. these bulbs just plug in and pull out.

DO NOT try to grab it and just pull straight down. use a slight side to side and back and forth motion. it makes this SO very easy. wiggeling it with a little downward pull it will fall out in a few shakes.
Now you should have this...open plug ins for the LED.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/domelight/15.jpg

Inserting the LED is pretty self known. the best thing is to get a good feel for the edge of the LED and push straight up. Now test the light. if you push the button but no light comes on..MAKE SURE THE KEY IS ON!! no but really if there is no light that comes on, dont worry, you probably didnt push it hard enough in. try again. it needs to be pretty far in.

Repeat these steps for the Front dome and you should be good. then put the cover plate back on.

Here is my setup:
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/domelight/6.jpg

NOW FOR THE REAR:
here are the bulbs for rear...stock on the right. LED on the left:
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/domelight/11.jpg

pretty much the same thing. pop the cover off in the same manor.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/domelight/9.jpg
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/domelight/10.jpg

push the little metal prong on the side over and use a credit card or something plastic to get on top of the bulb and push it out.

then replace with the LED. the LED is a little longer so try the best you can...DONT force it and break it. then test it.

and this is my final product for the front. when the doors open i have the interior light up all LED Blue. then when i need the map lights they are Hyper White. i think its HOT! these pics are taken during the day in my garage so there is some light coming in.
ALL BLUE ON: http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/domelight/13.jpg
ALL WHITE ON: http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/domelight/14.jpg

The led's wont get hot and melt the plastic will they?

LucidBD
03-26-2005, 01:09 AM
all in all took about 20 minutes to just tinker with it and such.

the LEDs will not melt the plastic...i accidentally left the dome lighting on over night and 8hrs later i turned them off and felt it just incase...and not hot at all.

this is a stupid question, but after converting to the leds, with they still fade in and fade out like the stockers do?

that would be so dope to have it fade in blue...

Just wanted to say Thank YOU to LucidBD for doing such a good job with the instructions.

Please provide instructions on other mods.

And for maximus96, Do you always make comment out of your Azz?

Not everyone needs instructions, but some people do. LucidBD was kind enough to provide them. What have you done for others in your life if you are such a smart Azz

Are they brighter, (the white that is) because that is a concern of mine. If they are as bright or brighter, consider it done.

the LEDs are very significantly brighter than the stock amber bulbs.
i love the look and feel of them when i use them or when the door is open. the blue lights up the interior and noticable from about 15-20ft outside at night. when using the white map lights, they light the place up nicely and give it a feel. this is very worth it for $18 shipped. took like 3 business days to get them. i ordered on a thursday night at like 11EST and got them on tuesday. the come well packed and protected.
for $18 this is a fun little mod to accent the interior and was well worth it.

actually i didnt even think about the hatch light....i never open the hatch..probably why i didnt think of it..

ok so i just took a look. seems to use the same size as the rear dome. took some pics put im not gonna post them yet. the hatch casing is a little different. there is a grey plastic covering that needs to be pulled off after getting the fixture out of the side panel.

now, inside the casing when you flip the switch it moves one side of the bulb down and to the side to make a connection to the TIP of the bulb. this may be difficult to do with the LED because the connection at the tip of the LED is much larger than the stock bulb. (if you have no idea what im saying, i dont blame you, i will have pics later)

this makes it hard because the connection will always be made and the switch will be useless.

i tried to put the rear dome LED in but the connection was always being made. i got a pretty big spark on the 1st and 2nd attempt. so i stopped there. i will look into it further.

i just got my windows tinted this weekend and they are SOOOOO illegal! i got hardcore 5% over the OEM tint. you can stand with your face to the window and barely see who is in the car. if you stand 4-5 feet back you cant see ANYTHING. so ill have to take 1 or 2 shots at night from inside and out.

LucidBD
03-29-2005, 03:53 PM
oh i had that problem with the center front housing. i turned it and it fell in. thats why in my directions above i BOLDED the words DO NOT TWIST or TURN. all you have to do to pull the grey control panel out in slide a flat head in the front..make some room for your fingers, grab with both hands and PULL down HARD. its not easy and your will not break it. trust me. then you can access the back on the housing. try moving the little bulb housings around.(i.e switch the left one to the center, the center to the left) make sure you place it in and turn it so that it makes a connection with the metal strip. test it a few times. you shouldnt have blow a fuse. not by just taking it out.

putting the grey cover back on is easy. you need to look up in the inset before you put it back. there are 2 WHITE caps that might be still stuck. need to pull those out and put them in the right positions on the control panel.

IF YOU NEED MORE HELP OR PICS...LET ME KNOW. i will go out there pull it out and take a few shots to help you out.. i know this is frustrating. i wanted to jab a flat head into my dash i was sooo mad.

PM ME if u want pics on this..i might do it anyway just incase this happens again

Damn, I paid way too much for super white/blue regular bulbs. I would have rather had LED's for a lot less. Great write up. Thanks. Hey do they have one for that light in the hatch? I still havent changed that one. Oh yeah, the license plate bulbs are the same as the front dome lights. You can put some LED's there.
I will put these LED's in when my current bulbs burn out.

Hmm.. you trying to turn your car into a Spencer's? :P

Yep, they flicker a little but it still fades.

The best thing about the white lights is that they have somewhat of a blue tint; nothing too ricey, but very nice.

the rear hatch light i havent been able to fit the LED from the rear dome in there just right yet. im looking for an alternate LED.

the lights do still fade in and out. the do flicker a little bit when you start the car and just barely noticable when you close the doors. still, looks great

Well i got mine today. Did the Front dome no problem. but waited til it got dark to do the back.(i was anxious) Well i think i might have popped the fuse. Got my LED's yesterday. Everything was as this thread said it would be. The only additional info I can add would be the following:

The bulbs were slick and hard to pull out. The right map light came easy but couldn't get the other two out. So I got a piece of 1"x3" 800 grit sandpaper and folded it over once to make good grip. Then I didn't have to squeeze the bulb and they came out.

The dome light gave me some troubles also. Put the new blue LED in and it didn't work. Took it out and looked it over, put it back in. Nothing. Took it out and switched with one of the LED map lights and the socket was working because the white came on. Put the blue back in and nothing. Got ____ed, thought it was busted. Took it out and turned it around and it worked. Don't know if this was a polarization problem or just a bad connection.

Everything else went fine. The back bulb was a little bigger than stock but stays in the socket fine so... Will take some pics later to add to the ones here.

heheh.. i got a 2 million color led as my dome light... granted it's not cheap though.. works in sync with my underbody lighting.. haha...

had to rig it though cause it was actually a double ended "bulb" and was originally intended for the rear dome light but found out it was too long.. but either way.. it fits well in the dome light... (had to just mess around with some wiring)...

now i need to do the map lights and the rear...

very nice DIY post, I was able to install 3 white LED in the front and 1 blue LED in the back dome at night within 15min. I used one of those smaller flat head to open the housing, it was a snap. when I first installed it non lite up, then i wiggled it out and turn it around and all lite up (polarization issue) so if yours didnt liight up, just take it out and put it in the other direction.

couple issues you might want to know:
1. The white LED give the car's inside a florecent light look and are not as bright as the stock bulbs. THe blue one seems brighter (color spectrum issue prehapse)

2. when you leave the lights at "Door", and once u close your door and wait for all the lights to go out I was still able to see very very faint hint of light emmiting from the center LEDs (both front and back) not sure if this will drain the battery in the long run, or the LEDs are extra sensitive.

other than that, the blue and white both looks great but i wish it was brighter.
the actually brightness of the white LEDS are about 30% less than what it appears in the DIY pictures. hope this helps.

is this:

I need some help guys. I tried to change my lights but i turned them and the little thing were the bulb guys pop up and i had to remove the whole dome

Go back and take a gander at the pics of the light sockets...and for some idiotic reasone there are directional arrows that instruct to turn it. If you didn't research before trying it, ANYONE would think that's how you get the lights out...and what happens is the socket falls 'in' to the ceiling and then you got to take the whole dome off.

Don't underestimate people...obviously they are smarter than the guy who prints the instructions.

As far as getting the dome off, just google it. There are a lot of forums on this topic because it's happened to a lot of people.

One other question...the pics in this thread and the link to superbrightleds is for 6-led bulbs. Has anyone tried anything else? I ordered 5-led because the light emitted has wider coverage, though it may not be as bright as the 6-led. Just wondering if anyone has tried different types of LED configs.

I use Uv 4 LED for the front (dome only) and it looked great but kinda dim compare to blue (what I have now, 6 LED). And this has been brought up earlier in the thread, if you have LED for the front and back, one will stay lit (not full strength) when all doors are closed if it's set to "door". I know LEDs draws very little power but does anyone know how this effects the battery? Thanks.

not sure about green. might look interesting.

i did change my rear license plate lights. i did not use LEDs

i just went to Advanced Auto Parts and picked up a set of Blue Bulbs that matched the stock fit. and for $6 they look SWEET at night. ill get picks tonight.
also did my hatch interior light. it uses the same LED as teh rear dome but it is a very tight fit. some sanding to the tips of the LED will help. or bend the fitting prong on the light caseing. I unfortunantly dropped the LED and broke it..DOH!

so i took the stock bulb and used a Blue permanent sharpie for the time being. and it looks fine. shows whiteish blue but still gives a good accent.

Took it out and turned it around and it worked. Don't know if this was a polarization problem or just a bad connection.

Yes, the rear LED is polarized, meaning it'll only work one way. If it doesn't work, don't assume the bulb is broke or the fuse is blown, just flip it!

Incidentally, this is a great little writeup! Already did the rear light, just ordered the LED for the front dome. Will have it pretty much identical to the write up... BLue LED's that go on when the doors are opened, but leaving the 2 side reading lamps white in case I need extra light.

I also have the Auto-dimming mirror with the light underneath, I was going to have the built-in blue light shine from underneath, but it's not really the same blue, more like a teal. So I tried the built-in amber, and it really looks nice, along with the amber dials in the center console it washes over the whole area with a slight amber hue. When I'm done with the whole thing, I'll try to post pics up.

09-06-2005, 08:50 PM
Old thread...following up on my old post...I ended up going with the 6-led instead of the 5-led 'wider' light. I think this is a better choice because the sockets are 'tucked' up into the ceiling, meaning you need something that points DOWN, not spreads out.

I got Red and it looks pretty cool, although red is not bright enough to really see anything, so I left the map lights stock.

I was thinking of doing the license plate lights, but red is not legal, and I'm not sure what else is going to look good since I have a red TC.

the lights for the hatch license plate can be done every easy (if you have average or small hands)

open the hatch and look on the inside of the hatch. there are 2 plastic panels that can pop out. pop them out and look in there. you get a good grip on the bulb housing and turn left to have it pop out. takes some wiggling and pulling to get it out then just replace it and reverse the steps...i have found Blue bulbs that fit perfect at any auto parts store.

some have blue bulbs but light up white and some have blue bulbs and actually light up blue.

i have both and will get pics sometime this weekend to compair.

Hah, wow, that easy huh. man! i tried for like 15 mins tring to jiggle it out, didnt think i had 2 turn it! GAH, so obvious. i will try that out next time i get the chance. another quiestion, for the dome light in the back, what size is the bulb? a 31mm or a 36? i have this guy who sells LEDs from Hong Kong, im doing business with him off of ebay. i saw that they call for DE3175. let me know. thanx

Ok so I went all the way through this post and even bought the led lights like now, and just realized...I was only seeing people with TC's Are the sizes listed some where back on page two the same for the xA.? I had been looking for the sizes to change mine out and got excited to find this so I bought the bulbs please tell me the sizes are the same. hey guys, do anyone kno if u can change the lil bulb in that compartment below the center console to blue led? if so, how?

7thgear
11-01-2005, 05:02 AM
it's fairly easy, if you do it the right way. don't try to use a little tweezer and pull the bulb out. you'll end up either breaking it or being very frustrated. what you want to do is from the passenger side, there's a hole to the left of the center console where your feet are placed. reach in that hole, you'll feel a wire. run your hands along that wire, up to the little cubby hole. pull and wiggle that thing out and you can actually pull the whole wire back out so you can see it ,but it stops/ends right at the hole. just pull the bulb out and put your desired color bulb in there. it uses #74 incandescent bulb also found at autolumination and superbrightled.com.

unless you plug it in from the front if it doesn't fit from behind... that is.. if your hands are small enough.. it's a tight fit.

i finally got the dome/map lights changed to white led. took me a total of no more than 10 minutes to complete it. i didn't think it would be that easy, but boy... it was a piece of cake. no problems at all except the back dome light... i had a hard time getting the led in cuz it was slightly longer, but it went in no problem. just a little squeeze would do it.

then i changed the license plate light to white leds also. that was really hard cuz my hands were a little too big to turn the bulb so i tried everything. i finally took the wire that was connecting it and pulled it out, took a big enough flat driver and stuck it in the hole and turn it and pop right out. the only problem was one of the two prongs got bent by the flat driver so i had to find a small enough flat driver and re-bent it. works fine but when i went to turn the lights on, only one would work so i simply just rebent it and turn the led and then it worked. the bulb isn't exactly turned all the way in yet, cuz my hands are too big and it's really hard to turn it in, but it works.

the white leds are not as bright as the stock, but it gives a really nice white/blue glow to the car though.

does anyone know how to change the hatch lights? thanks in advance!

I just finished this, the first mod on my new car. It took me an hour because I pushed one of the lamps up above the gray plastic piece, so I had to take the whole thing out...then another 10 minutes to remove the bulb from the socket. I ordered the LEDs recommended by the author...they are not quite as bright as the stock bulbs. The rear light was a piece of cake, took maybe 5 minutes to do. I have greens for the driver and passenger lamps, a blue in the middle, and a purple one in the rear. It looks absolutely sick and was well worth the time.

If anyone needs any of the map light or cubby LED, let me know I ordered extra in case something broke. Blue #74 for cubby and then 2 superwhite for maplight/1 blue for center light. I don't have extra for cargo/trunk though.

I don't have time now to go back through it but if you go back throug these pages it was talked about the type of LED to get and thats the one that works. You don't need the one with the housing, you can get just the regular LED bulb that plugs in. To answer your other question.....NO.....the cubby light is not like the head lamps and cannot be used on the cubby light.

ok So I ordered those same bulbs and installed mine today and I have a GREAT tip for you guys.

TO GET THE STOCK BULBS OUT ( Slippery lil suckers ): Get one of those big thick rubber bands and wrap it around the bulb once. The rubber sticks to the glass and makes it easy to grip rather than feeling like you're gonna break em. Theeen just pull straight down on em.

I was prying on em for about 20 mins ( drying off the finger tips/ trying some more ) Got frustrated, gave up, went back to my desk at work and saw the nice big pile of rubber bands. Took me 10 seconds after that :)

I got blue front and back dome lights for my white TC, and red for my girlfirends red TC. The reading lights are white on both. I installed them in both cars. Everything worked fine except for the back dome light in my TC, also it was hard to fit it in. When I close the doors and the lights fade out, you can see in the rear dome there's a slight blue fade that stays on, I haven't checked how long does it stay on. I tried taking it out and putting it back again, not helping. My gf's car does not have this problem. So I figured I'd call the www.superbrightleds.com and tell them about the problem. They're sending me out a replacement bulb with prepaid return postage, to send this one back.

I did the same setup as the guy who posted this. I ordered a blue light for the cubby, and just in case I ordered a white one. Got the lights yesterday installed the, first I tried the blue, then I tried the white for the cubby. The blue didn't match the dome lights, and honestly didn't look that great in there, so I swithched it out with the white, and I think it looks much better. I also saw somebody on here saying that you can sand the tip of that light a little bit to make it kind of spread out, that also worked. I tried it with both of the lights.

P.S. For my gf's RED TC I did the red led setup, except for the map lights, those are white. Looks Great, and cubby in red looks good.

I just did this mod and it was a piece of cake, I also did the license plate, shifter, and cubby hole too!

I did all the mods at once and it took about 1 hour. Shifter was a pain in the ___ because the silver shifter would not budge, and the cubby hole is tough because it does not allow a lot of slack. The license plate was a little tough because I had to get some plyers to turn the lights. They were in there real tight.

Nice post! I ordered red LEDs for the front and rear domes and hyper whites for the reading lights and installed them last night. I'm on the fence about the red but the hyper whites are sick!

Btw, thanks goes out to whoever suggested wrapping the bulbs with a rubber band to help pry them out. That made it about 1000x easier to take out.

Very easy mod, makes such a huge difference too. Took like 10 mins tops, also did the trunk light, didnt fit the best, but its rigged in well enough to stay. Makes it feel like a new luxury car inside now w/ the hyperwhites...

so what is the verdict with the dome lights staying on (very dim) when the doors are closed? I have read the entire thread and a few random people have said that after they changed their dome lights to the 6-led lights, the light fades out, but doesnt fade away completely.

Thermalzeal
05-25-2006, 05:51 PM
Thats just a lil residual electricity keeping the led slightly alive. LED's use so little power that even a picture of electricity will make em light up.

BTW. I had my friend in the passanger seat when i was trying to install the led's
and he was like here leme help, I told him that u just needa pull down but he was like"pop oh ____...that bulb went inside" haha

Anyways so yeah Im gonna be one of those people that has to pull down the whole housing. Im STILL waiting from my camera from a friend, and once i get it...can finally take some pics.

Ok- so I want to ask a question about installing new license plate lights.... or rather, getting the old ones out!

I know LucidBD said you turn them to the left, but just to make this idiot proof...

I open the hatch to my car, and i turn my back to the car, then pull the hatch down so i'm looking at it (facing away from the car). Pop off the cover for the light, unplug the power source and then I turn it....
A) Clockwise
B) Counter clockwise

Now honestly, I tried both ways but didn't have any success... i've seen other people say that if you have big hands (which i do) it's really hard to get it out, but i'm not sure why that would be- I got a good grip on it but just couldn't seem to twist it, and really didn't want to break it. Any help would be appreciated.. thanks in advance.

Dude, I just swapped out my lights and it looks sooooo sick!

For future reference if anyone ever gets their bulb/housing pushed inside and they have to take off the entire housing remember to pull out the white clip thingies and reattatch them to the housing so when you put them back inside everything fits correctly. I had two of mine get stuck up there and it wouldnt go back in properly, I hada pull em out with pliers and then it worked like a charm.

meaning use the needle noses to twist it, or just pull it straight out? It feels like its extremely tight in there.. did u do this on an 06? Sorry for all the questions but i dont' wanna eff up my license lights.

I just did mine today and it turned out great, but so much for the 10 min thing....took me an hour!!!! I dropped the damn LED under my seat and couldnt get it out for like 20 mins!!! Once i did get it out i started to pull out all stock lights....was easy and then when i started installing the leds one of the sockets (black area u shove in light) was loose....i guess scion didnt put it in properly, so when i tried to insert my LED i lost the socket area and had to rip off the whole freakin thing open close button and all!! Damn u scion lol, so yeah this took me alot longer than it should have, but a great and fun mod... La La La

that sucks bro, it only took me 10-15 minutes...only took that long cuz I did it in the dark lol... I'll try to put up pics soon. I also changed the light in the cubby hole to blue...I actually think that looks the best out of all of them. Finally, I think I wanna add LEDs behind the front speaker grilles and hook them up to a switch. hopefully I can do all that soon and get pics up

That is cool that you are adding those leds to sell, but a savings of $.50 on shipping really isn't enough to sway most people. As for the shipping, mine got there in 3 days. How much faster is your shipping?

Garage1217

All my shipping is priority mail and is there in 3 days or less always, not a gamble. Also if people do not want to keep it in the scion family for the same exact product, well then that is there business. I have gone out on quite a limb to support this community in many ways and am offering this as more of a help than anything. For those of you that are looking for LED's, Please do contact me! I did a custom LED dome light for a customer here (WhiteOut). I put 24 15,000MCD superflux LED's on a board. I replaced his 6 led bulb that was in there and it made a big difference.

I am trying to get some pictures from him (I didn't have my camera when I did the mod), but here is a pic of a dome light I did for an xb (same idea). I couldn't fit as many LED's on the xb though.

I changed mine but I have one problem. Seems as if my center dome light doesn't comp[letely turn off when the light is set at "door". When the stock bulb is installed it turns all the way off. I have tested several LED's and it only happens then the LED Bulbs are in and the setting is on door. Does this happen to anyone else? If it has, what do I have to do because the small lighting is annoying.

A word of advice for the other impatient people on here that like to push and tug on on parts to get them out. Don't push on the piece that holds the dome lights in. It is a circuit board and it will break. Then you'll get violated by the dealer and have to pay $86 for a replacement :tap:

I went with white 9-LED 921 bulbs for the map lights. They're uber bright. I originally got them for the reverse lights, but wasn't impressed by the light output, but for the interior, they work great. Got them on e-Bay, lol.

For the front dome, I got the 1-watt LED in red. That is really bright also. They're a lot brighter than any of the other bulbs for the parking lights, but I wouldn't trust them to last a long time if you use your headlights a lot.

I ordered a bunch of the 1 watt LEDs for some friends, and they all got here within 2 to 3 days.

I might not be able to get them tonight, and I'm going to NJ this weekend. Lets just say that I have the same type in the parking lights. They're bright enough to shine light on trees over 20 feet away (not real bright to light them up, but can make shadow puppets, lol.)

Does anyone know if the 06 XA uses the same two type of bulbs? My manual says that both front AND rear are double-ended. The XA does not have 2 map lights up front like the TC so I am certain there is only one bulb inside. I take metro to work and I was gonna pick up the LEDs on my way home so its not like I can just pop off the covers and have a look. :eyebrow:

My front parking lights take the same as the TC front dome lights and I wanna replace it with BLUE... what would be better a 4-led, 6-led or 9-led?

One more question... does anyone know what kind of bulb I need for the "oven" in my ride?

Thanks

Jonathan, did you ever consider using the 12 LED white lights for your reverse lights from superbrightleds.com? just wondering if they would be even brighter? Cause as i understand the 9 LED lights are narrow view and more focused and bright in one direction and the 12 are wide view which are focused all around.

I don't know if you'll find pink. I just got a complete set of UV (purple) for both domes, the cubby, and the headlight/parking lights from Superbrights, which may be the closest you'll get to pink. However, I'm kind of dissapointed - I had blue for a year now and decided to change it up, but the UVs are nowhere near as bright as the blue. The interior barely lights up at all. You may want to stick with one of the more popular colors.

PS: KooLAid: I already asked Garage1217 about pinks. He says he doesnt have them but he will check for me. I'll keep you updated. I have the 9-LED 921 bulbs in my front dome right now. They work pretty good. They do stick out a little more, which puts them real close to the cover for the dome lights. As long as the 12-LED ones aren't much longer than the 9-LED ones, you'll be fine.

so i just did the dome swap to mine and have read this a few times and the general complaint is that it is sometimes hard to get the bulbs out. i used two pieces of duck tape and pulled them out with no resistance. since you will not be using the bulbs anymore why not, right. just thought that might help some of you out

Do any of you ride with your interior lights on? If so, have you been pulled over?

does anyone know if the 9led will work instead of the 6 led in the front dome? and will the 9 led work in the license plate lights?

Yes it will. I've used 9 led and 12 led in my front dome. Both work fine.

And the bulbs that have LEDs facing sideways are better for your license plate lights.
