Default Scion XB 08 reliability? Looking to buy one..

Hey guys,

Its been a while since I had a scion and am thinking of coming back to this camp.

Was wondering what the verdict was with the reliability of the vehicle. I am going to be checking out a 2008 xB auto today. One owner, auto and they have all the work done at the dealer (but no proof that they did?!)

What should I be looking out for? It has 84k miles on it.

Thanks
Wilson

Hi Wilson
I have an '08 with 48k miles. I have had an official recall to replace the engine coil, and did the unofficial water pump replacement. I have not had any issues with my ride. I just did the rotors and pads because I wanted to, not that they needed it. I consistently get about 28mpg in mixed driving, with a manual shift. I would not hesitate to take a cross country drive today if I needed to! I do hear some windshield creaking, but only in really cold temps.
Good Luck!

Like the other poster, I too had the water pump replaced at 41k and the coils done at 63k. There is a recent TSB concerning oil consumption due to the piston/rings defect. I don't know how you would check to see if the xB you want consumes oil without driving it for a thousand miles or so.

Not all of the people here are having the oil consumption problem but you should be aware that the problem does exist on some 08/09 xB's and a host of other Toyota's with this engine. The TSB states that Scion will fix this if you are within the 60k warranty, if not well...............

MPG's are in line with the above post except that I have the automatic. Look at the underside of the hood, on the pass. side of the vehicle. If you see a "pink" line it's antifreeze from a leaky water pump. That's how I knew I needed a water pump.

Good luck with your choice!!!

i have had the stated problems above fixed for free. did not know about the oil thing tho lol. and you can find out if it was reall brought to the dealer by running the vin on carfax. it will tell you every thing any dealer has done. around 30 bucks.

Still under 11Kmi with my '08 and only failure so far is #3 coil pack. Unfortunately, that's not a lot of miles to draw conclusions from -- still loving the car though. Best wishes with your purchase !

My '08 has 114,xxx miles on it. Other than routine oil changes, tires, brakes, etc... nothing else has ever failed. The only time it went to the dealer was for 30/60/90k services. Been running Royal Purple synthetic with K&N oil filters since I got it.

Water pump campaign? I've only heard of a TSB for that -- can you fill us in?

Oh, well ! I'd just love to learn of a definitive correction to the water pump issue -- if only a new part number !

99,000 miles, 2008 xB. MT, ~31 MPG 15% hiway. Coils just replaced under TSB/Vol recall along with Water Pump last week which was covered under the 3rd party extended warranty.
My recent tires i went with GY Eagle GT's and went up to 225 width.
Windshield cracked and needed replacement along with many others but who knows
My real complaint which they dumped was the one reverse light. Gives virtually no light on the passenger side. I even bought a Hi Intensity LED bulb for it which is twice as bright but just doesnt shine much on the passenger side.
Otherwise i have no big complaints. Love my xB.

16100-0H050 is the part number used on my pump replaced 1/19/11.

Now we will have to wait until someone has this new number replaced to get an idea of the quality change in this part.

Thanks guys, that's good to know! What I ask of a good manufacturer is they correct any recognized issue and tell me how to accomplish same ! A recall is preferred, but in absence of that, a specific part number replacement will hold me ! Just please, don't hide it.

My 08 just rolled over 90k and I've had to do nothing except for the regular maintenance and the coil replacement. Other than that it's been an extremely reliable car!

I bought my NBM 08 XB in mid-2007 and it has never been back to the dealer or had a single issue to date. 52,000 miles now and 25,000 of those have been turbocharged. I did change the spark plugs because of the turbo but the originals are still working fine in my dad's Highlander.

According to J.D. Power, the 08 XB is the most reliable vehicle in it's class.
