View Full Version : Polish and/or Protectant for wheels?
KevinxB 03-28-2005, 01:17 AM I have a set of gunmetal wheels with a polished lip. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a polish or protectant product to help keep the lip looking good. I tried using some liquid metal polish I found in the auto section at Wal-Mart (Blue Magic I think) and it didn't seem to work so good; it didn't remove tarnish on the finish very well at all. It was also very messy. Eagle One "Nev-R-Dull" wadding polish worked a little better but I don't know how well it will protect the finish, if at all.
I'm thinking of getting some Wheel Wax from Tire Rack to protect the wheels, but I'm also looking for a polish or something that will remove any tarnish and bring out the shine in the lip. Any suggestions?

uncompiled 03-28-2005, 06:46 PM Yeah, me too. I'm going to order wheel wax this week.
KevinxB 03-29-2005, 05:33 PM After a few rainy days here I found out that the Eagle One does little to protect the wheels from spots and tarnishing; as I suspected. I might have to just use that for polishing and the wheel wax for protection.
If anyone has experience with any other products, please let us know.
Shoof 03-29-2005, 05:37 PM If the wheel is covered with clearcoat, the metal wheel polish is pretty much worthless. I believe Mother's makes wheel polish for clear coat finishes. I have it and it works pretty good....
KevinxB 03-29-2005, 08:53 PM No clear coat on the lip, thats why I'm looking for an effective polish.
Mothers Billet for that lip !
hamadeh 03-30-2005, 01:30 AM can you put a picture of your wheels on, i wanna see how the gunmetal looks
dallas-tc-31 03-30-2005, 02:25 AM In the aircraft industry we used a product called flitz It is awesome , we used it for paint and for aluminum and It lasts for ever , and takes very little work. I have black Motegi ff7's and they are a pain to keep clean I ussually don't advocate wax from the car wash , but I do it to my wheels only and then wipe clean , and it is a whole lot easier than using spritz every time. hope this helps
KevinxB 03-30-2005, 04:27 AM Thanks for the help, guys. I'll have to look into your suggestions.
dallas-tc-31: where can I get Flitz?

Shoof 03-30-2005, 04:46 AM I've seen Flitz on TV Infomercials.... In searching the web I found this: http://www.flitz-polish.com/
Aside from the Mother's Polish for clearcoat wheels, I use another one, which is a regular Mag and Aluminum Polish, seen here:

The other I noticed on their website is Billet Metal polish, although I don't know much about it:

You can see the rest of their products from www.Mothers.com , and clicking on Products, then Tire/Wheel care.

KevinxB 03-30-2005, 04:58 AM Thanks, Shoof!
I think I saw that Mothers Billet at the auto parts store, I'm gonna pick that up and give it a try. If it doesn't work then I'll go with the Flitz.
Kremtok 03-31-2005, 06:05 AM Try Brasso; we use it on the ship to clean everything that shines, and it works better than anything out there.
BigBaby 03-31-2005, 04:33 PM Don't want to hi-jack your thread or anything...but...
I have a set of high gloss (black) rims with a polished lip.
Would a clear-coat polish for the rim and mag/aluminum polish for the lip be the recommendation? or would the clear-coat be enough for the entire wheel?
KevinxB 03-31-2005, 05:17 PM I think I've seen the mag/aluminum stuff on the shelf before. It has a bunch of finishes they say it shouldn't be used on. I dunno if it's abrasive or what. I'd check out the label before I tried it on either surface. If it isn't recommended for the clearcoat/painted part of the wheel, then some regular clearcoat safe polish would probably be a better choice.
