Air Conditioning crapped out.. 05' w/78k
Sup everyone.. For a few months I had my a/c working intermittenly.. (it would blow cold and then just out of no where start blowing warm, then a few minutes later it would kick on again or sometimes stay off all day then the next day it would be fine, so crazy!)... So, thank God I work at a shop and my buddy diagnosed it, after finding that the a/c compressor pressures are fine (when it worked) then when the a/c would not turn on we found that the magnetic clutch coil was bad. Easy fix! It was $190 my cost from Toyota and I also bought a new drive belt since it's original but still in good shape..
Anyways, I saw a few posts from other Scion forums and people said they had failed compressors.. Hmmm Well whoever you have diagnose your car its not a bad idea to get a second opinion and at best, if you go to a Toyota dealership and they mis-diagnose the problem then I would make them eat it!
So.. not bad for 78k on an 05'.. she's still running strong with no other issues
Yay!

Yes it is a known issue for early years of the TC. 07+ they vamped it up to increase airflow as well.
Put in new compressor and I would also recommend a new water pump while you're at it, my water pump isn't leaking but it's about time for my replacement just in case, my 05 is at 119K miles and my A/C doesn't have any issues.

I am about to take my car in to have the a/c checked out, my a/c stopped working last summer. I took it to have it recharged at Toyota last summer, and that did nothing. It was still blowing hot air when I left the dealership.
I am not sure yet where to take it, but Toyota charges $125 for diagnostic checks which can be applied to repairs. I was trying to avoid the dealership, but not sure if there are any chains I should check out where they would check for free. I live on the side of town with garages everywhere.
I am guessing it's the compressor, but I know very little about a/c systems on cars. My TC is up to 110k and my a/c and my shocks are both in need of repairs/replacement now.

I went by a mechanic shop during lunch and had them check it out. I had them add freon and we checked all the fuses and it does not seem like the compressor is coming on. The mechanic said it normally fires up when pressure reaches 275 psi on his gauge, but it only got to about 125 psi.

He said it would cost $240 for the install. Where should I buy the compressor at? Was trd sparks the cheapest?
Can anyone confirm that this is what needs to happen?
Edit: I think said condenser and meant compressor.

This seemed to be the thread with the most info regarding the compressor going out.

Auto parts warehouse has a Denso compressor with clutch new for $371

TRD dparks shows Compressor is $857. That doesn't seem correct.

make sure you get the complete kit that comes with the new o-rings, drier and expansion device. since once you change out the compressor you have to change those items too. my tc had 90k when my compressor died on me. i got mine from ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Scion-tC-04-...item27baccb2d1.
try and shop around for prices cause $240 seems a little high. i changed mine myself but before i decided to change it myself, i asked around the shops in my area. they were quoting me $150-$200. hope everything works out for you!

I ended up getting the a/c kit for $345, a condenser for $75 and a water pump for $30 all off ebay and had them installed for $450. I should have also got the evaporator because I may have to clean it now. It is blowing cold air and working again, but it's not as cold as I remember it. Still less than 24 hours since it was hooked up and may need to get worked in slightly.
In total it was around $900 to get my a/c working again along with replacing the water pump. Could be worse.
