6.5" IN DOORS.......spacers or no
i'm hearing of some people who have installed 6.5" speakers on the door that they had to fabricate a spacer?
how thick would it have to be? and is there enough room under the door panel for a spacer?
would that spacer be just a ring?

you dont HAVE to have a spacer inless your speakers are too deep.....i had plenty of room for a 3/4" spacer ring made of MDF......all you have to do is cut off an excess piece on the back of your door panel (if that)....you'll know what i'm talking about when you get into it.....
Yes you need spacers unless your speaker can fit in the stock spacer (after you cut out the stock speaker) They need to be larger than 3/4 of an inch in my experience but that again depends on your speaker and how much clearance you have..

so then... after you drill out the rivets, what kind of screw did you guys use to hold the new speaker in? It seems like a machine screw would need a nut behind it, not sure if my hand will fit back there.
Thanks
Thanks
I used machien screws with wingnuts. Made it easier to hold.
My brother had already predrilled the speaker mounting spots, so we left the speakers off, mounted the spacers with 3 machine screws, and that worked pretty well. Then, we mounted the speakers with wood screws into the 3/4" MDF spacer. One thing on the TC was that the spacer has to be fairly close to the oringial spacer/speaker or it hits the door panel. We just kept grinding it down (belt sander) until it was perfect. Spend some time and get good measurements and it shouldn't be too bad.

To put the new spacers in, I just used bolts and nuts w/ rubber washers in case it came loose.
Easiest way is as follows:
Drill out stock speakers
Trace the bowed triangle pattern of the stock spacer on some MDF
Trace your cut out circle inside that.
Cut out the spacer
Hold it up to the door and use charcoal or something to mark where the holes need to be...just put the charcoal in the door and rub over the holes
drill out the holes
put in the bolts
screw in your speakers
Sorry I don't have pics of this process

well i just ripped the cone out and then took cutters and cut all of the fingers off of the basket, this removes everything but the outer ring and the factory braket then i just screwed the alpines onto that. In my opinion that is a lot better than fabricating brackets. I'll try to post some pics this afternoon.

well SCI_TC_GUY i don't think that this guy had a problem with his speakers fitting, he simply asked for help on how we installed ours. Dont try to be better than everyone and maybe you wont come off as so arrogant

don't try to play "peer moderator" and you won't come off as such a jackass......
I also used 1 1/4" machine bolts (pretty sure number 10's) which worked perfectly. In addition to the wingnuts, I used lock washers to insure stability for a number of years.
I liked Mandos list, it's almost exactly what I did except I did do some work re-shaping as I went as I wanted as much MDF for the speaker mounting as possible. The original plastic spacer was a bit thin in certain spots. Also, we had easy access to power tools with a belt sander, so it was easy going.

Hey guys. I'll be moving on Sunday....and part of my new job is going to be a complete sound deadening/system install pictoral walkthrough in a tC. So you'll get pictures in the next week or two if you can hold out. I tried to get them earlier but it's been a hectic life the last couple months.
