I know there have been many discussions and arguments about the average mileage on the xB. I know it is also normal for many to drive about 25 mpg. But im getting 21. What the f*ck is up with that? I'm only on 17in rims. Maybe its because i drive 95% of the time on streets, but that can't decrease the effienciency that greatly. I'm really disturbed that i only get 220 miles on each fillup. Anyone have any answers? No, i have no underthe hood upgrades nor exhaust upgrades. I don't drive like a grandma nor do i drive like a raging madman. Thanks,
Andrew.

How many miles are on your xB? Perhaps you have some dirty injectors (this could really happen at any time, but gets worse with mileage). See your local Scion dealer for the little can of genuine Toyota fuel injector cleaner (about $8, I think) and dump it in the tank.
Hopefully that helps some.
BTW - a "rich" smell would be similar to your lawnmower running on full choke. Probably not that extreme (if it is, you have serious problems), but that should give you the idea.

It can not be the 17'rims since I have 17'rims with 215x40x17 tires I drive 80% highway and try and keep it 65 and under I have been getting between 28-32 mpg Sometimes I get the urge of heavy foot syndrome 70+ and my mpg suffer as well maybee 27mpg
I have the following mods cold air kit, dc headers and magna flow exhaust.

The wheels work against the litle box's motor every time it has to spin them up to speed - which happens more in the city than the highway.
If you got a wheel/tire combo that it physically larger diameter than stock, you will also benefit from taller gearing on the highway, although if the tires are wider than stock you will encounter more rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag.

i got 18 inch rims and i get 300 mile to the tank,on the highway i keep it at 3000 rpm and in the city i avoid hard braking and quick acceleration, since we are on this gas topic i wonder how is the rs 2.0 on gas mileage?
Is your car pretty new? I would not expect to get anywhere near EPA numbers until you have at least 5-10,000 miles on the clock. It needs to get broken in a bit.
Your wheels should not have a signicant effect on mileage unless you've changed the overall diameter, or they are heavy wheels.
Do you have a 5 speed or an automatic?
I have about 15,000 miles on my 5 speed xB and I always get at least 28-29 mpg and I have a little bit of a lead foot. The best I've ever done on a tank was 34 I think and that was 75-80% highway driving.
I average about 30 and that is mostly in town driving, but not in constant heavy traffic or anything.

I have 1300 miles on the car and an automatic. As far as wheel goes i have adr gt-sports. I've asked around and found out that these wheels are a little heavy. As far as tires, im on 205/40/17. As soon as i get some funds i'm going to be replacing the wheels, not necessarily for looks but for mileage. It really peaves me how much i fillup my tank knowing that i have to fill up almost every 6 days. (im 16 and have to fill the tank on my own; as far as this goes for a 16 yr old its a pain
) I'm gradually thinking about selling the wheels for around 300, then using the 300 i got for selling my old stocks to buy some wheels on wheelsnext. Only problem is is thati would have to buy the wheels first, then sell my current wheels. Anyone have any opinions on lighter weight wheels? I'm almost certain it's the wheels, since before i got then i got 30+ MPG.
Hey bud, "old dude" here...
You've seen my box; It's only a few weeks older than yours. It has 18" Enkei wheels and 215/35 Nitto NeoGens riding on TRD suspension and TRD 1" springs. DC front strut bar, Injen short-ram and 8ga ground wires on an auto tranny. 3100 miles currently.
I have pretty much had these mods from the get-go spending the first week I had the car doing the upgrades.
The Injen intake was the last mod I added.
Before the intake was installed, I averaged 24mpg around town, and 29mpg on the freeway at 3000 RPM (about 70 MPH).
After the intake was installed, I average 22mpg around town, and 31mpg on the freeway. The acceleration is better, especially the low end, (understand, better means very little in reality, but I can feel it pulling harder out of the hole..) and I tend to drive hard around town. I like to accellerate...
I dont play rice burner, but I don't granny around either. As the car breaks in more, it feels better and better.
When I swithced the stock wheels to the 18's, I was paying attention to the difference that I could "feel" between the two. 18's handle better, no comparrison. When the strut bar went on, the little box on skinny rubbers hugs real nice. (rear sway bar next...)
Anyway, I know my mileage is down from the specs. I blame it on my driving style around town. On the freeway, if I bump the speed up to 80, at 3200 RPM, I get a small hit in mpg.
I have gone through tanks of gas exclusively around town near 220 miles, and tanks exclusively on the freeway at 310 miles.
Bottom line is, if we mess with the factory layout of the car, mpg will suffer.
But what are the trade-offs?
I REALLY REALLY like to see fixed-up boxes. I REALLY REALLY like to drive mine too. Would I go back to stock in order to gain 8mpg around town? NO WAY!
But that's me.
I know being 16 and buying gas is tough...been there once! (I drove a VW bug to save on gas, and ended up making a souped-up Baja Bug out of it...I drove it fast too and suffered at the pump)
You got a really nice car there! It's lookin' good and you take care of it. As the car breaks in, your mpg will go up some, but city driving in SoCal is tough. Did you buy the car for it's mileage? I think not. It was a factor for sure, but we box lovers drive 'em for other reasons. We like being different, and some of us like to tinker with our rides.
Hey, you coulda had a Focus...
BTW, DON'T speed through Cypress-especially on Valley View around the college and high school

I just got 28.5 MPG half city half hwy with only about 600 total miles on the car. it was cold and rainy and driving on backroads(hwy 5 south from springfield to mountain home for those of you in missouri/arkansas) i was somewhat disappointed b/c i thought i was a pretty good drifver. I am going to see how the next few tanks go out and what kind of changes i get. hopefully better.
I'm sure your engine is fine. If you had an issue with your injectors, it would idle rough and would hesitate. Its normal to smell the exhaust when cold.
The wheels will work against you, but it should not be too bad.
It's probably mostly your driving habits. Make believe there is an egg on the gas pedal and drive a bit easier.
ALSO.. some cities are using oxygeniated fuel. This will hurt your MPG.
My xB is all stock. It has 1800 miles on it. Last fill up was 32.89 I have never been below 30 mpg on a fill. I drive normal with an occasional run up to redline... but I don't go WOT from a dead stop.... I save that for my other car..

Thanks for all of the help, im glad to hear that im not the only one suffering
But you guys are right, mileage on this car wasn't really a factor when buying, plus 22 mpg is still a lot better than a lot of other cars. I guess if i took the freeway more i'd see a diffrence. Just wondering, but what if you bought 15in. wheels; would the gas mileage go back up? Just a hypothetical to ponder over...
