View Full Version : Air Sound when stepping on the gas

I remember a post about this topic in the past (that a few people were talking about), but now that my windows are down (because the weather is nice), I have noticed that there is an intake of air which can be heard when applying more gas. Anyway, I wanted to know if this air whisk is coming in through the filter or is there an actual leak where it is getting sucked in through. I am well aware that a 100% final answer of this can only be determined by someone hearing exactly where the air is coming from but is this a noise that all scion tC owners’ hear? If it is…. that is fine because I have no problem w/ the intake of air but am concerned because I don’t know what the answer really is. Any feedback will help. Thanks

FYI: I have my stock air filter and exhaust.

I'm a Nissan mechanic and what you are hearing is the same thing that our Quest and Maxima customers complain about: an air sound when they step on the gas(accelerator pedal). Since the intake manifold is made of like a plastic-type material, like carbon fiber, it's the sound of rushing air passing inside of this intake manifold to the cylinders. This is a normal sound cause if it was an intake leak, the engine would be running rough, like a cylinder misfire... :D

It's good stuff. It sounds like a quiet intake, stock

ok. I was just wondering because my old car had engine issues so there is no way in hell I want to go back to that. I had my windows down driving all over the place and I heard that sound. If you listen for it you can hear the sound but can be overlooked if looking at things on the road.

I'll quote myself from another thread on the same subject...
It whistles because Scion designed it to make it sound like an aftermarket intake. The charcoal filter has nothing to do with it. You could rip it out and it would make the same noise. The stock intake is a CAI of sorts, since it draws intake air from the fender area and not from under the hood.

Dude, you and me both. My last car was in and out of the shop constantly for the two years I had it, until it finally dropped it's transmission at 70k.

I'll never buy a Dodge again.

But yeah... I get pretty paranoid when something feels 'off' in my tC. I was on the freeway the other day, and suddenly my car started loosing power... I had to press the pedal further and further to get it to keep the same speed.

I was starting to get freaked out, until... I rolled down the window and realized it was really, really windy outside. And I was driving against the wind. :relief:

That Air sound you hear is just the intake sucking air in. The same thing happens in my dads camry. It just sounds like its sucking alot of air in so you get a little PSSSSSSSSSS sound for a sec or two. No worries
