I think that's what was used before LEDs became mainstream.

Your topic title is another case of give and take. Sure Neon is cheaper But it is more fragile and less reliable. It is brighter (depending on manufacturer). Basically a tradeoff.

The colors seems truer with LED than with either neon or CCFL, but not as bright. LEDs can look spotty, depending on the amount of distance they have to diffuse. LEDs can be put in many more places, the shortest neon is about 4 inches.

The price difference is negligible, you can buy LED tubes for about the same price. I wouldn't say one is better than the other overall, it depends on the application.

Also, LEDs don't need an inverter giving much more flexibilty in mounting...
