Default tc: flip out or double-din?

what do you all prefer flip out or double din monitor? i was leaning toward the double din but there's not much variety that i've seen, well not as much as the flip out monitors, also will the flip out monitor work with the tc center consol cover? any opinions are welcome.

double diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin

IMO there is absolutely no excuse for not having a double DIN screen in this car. It's a perfect match.

the flip outs do work with the cover
I can't be 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure that most people are NOT able to make the cover door work with a flip out. The unit just sticks out too far, from what I understand. So you'd either have to cut the door or remove it.

It seems to be fairly clear what everyone likes. I completely agree - I'm really hoping to pick up the Pioneer AVIC-D1, but it's fairly new and there aren't a lot out to get a discount on. I wish I could pick one up cheap, but "cheap" is still over a grand.

I have the Eclipse 5435 and so does my girlfriend, needed to cut the factory brackets to make the door work but it wasn't hard to do.

It isn't even a contest because this looks so factory and if you go eclipse, you can use the factory plugs, they use Toyota standard plugs.

Well I would assume the pioneer (like the AVIC-N2 and AVIC-D1) use the factory plugs too, since pioneer makes the stock Scion deck. You and your girlfriend sure spend a lot of money on car audio - how much did you pay for that stuff?

We got them from a local dealer, Audio Advisors, they cut us a deal since we got two, but I probably could have gotten them down a little more. 1699 each, plus 100 each for the sirius modules, so with tax it was a little more than 1900 each.

She wasn't going to let me have a navi/dvd system without her getting one also ;)

As for the Pioneer units, they may use the same plugs (I don't think they do though) but you can't watch a movie while the car is moving.

The reason the Elicpse uses the factory plugs, is because they are the maker of all the toyota factory nav units.

Well in all honesty, I'd rather save money than be able to watch movies. At all I mean - if the thing doesn't play movies it wouldn't break my heart. I want good music stuff and good nav. The AVIC-D1, for example, doesn't play movies but has the whole XM traffic thing, which seems pretty cool. I just don't know where everyone around here gets upwards of $1500 to blow on stereos. I get paid pretty well and I guess I could do it, but I would definitely feel the hit. I assume that most of you are still paying off the car as well, yeah? I'll own mine in another 4 months or so and I guess I'm kind of waiting to get to that point first.

Paying off my car? If you must know, I just sent in my 1st payment. LMAO!!!

In a few months, I'm going to take a home equity loan and pay off my car and some other debt and take the interest deduction.

As for having 1500 to blow on my stereo, If I get the remaining parts I want (JL Audio speakers and amps) that will be another 2500 + 400 for cabling and doing the labor myself. I'm going with a wheelwell enclosure (where the spare goes) with 2 JL 10w7's and a plexi window to show off the amps and some lights in there. I have to finish the plan but it should raise floor about 2.5 inches from stock and appear completely stock with the trunk mat in there.

That's going to be a nice setup. I just know the day I do something like that to my car is the day it gets stolen or driven into a tree or something. I'm just stupidly practical about most things so I really can't see myself going that far at all. If I can scare up $1500 for the Nav system, which I'd probably end up installing myself and totally messing up (to save money of course) it would be a pretty big stretch. $1500 buys a lot of things.

Definitely double din for me. I have always thought the flip up looked tacky, and has more potential to break. Just my opinion though, no offense to anyone that has the flip up. I really like the Eclipse double din units with NAV. The touch screen is very nice. That is potentially what I want down the road, but for around $1500 it will be a ways down the road.

I've seen 'em both and I'm sure that double DIN is way better, but they're both super expensive - I'd never buy the flip out, but I can't afford the double DIN either. I'm positive that if you saw the double DIN nav units (even without dvd movies) in the 500-600 range, they'd sell TONS of them.
