View Full Version : How many times have you accidentally hit your horn in a day?
trogdor 05-10-2005, 02:36 AM The horn on the xB is extremely touchy. I can't speak for the other scion models, but I think my record is about 5 times in one day. I usually try to laugh it off and wave as if I meant to honk. I never quite get used to it and still get startled for a second each time. What's your record?
miggy 05-10-2005, 02:43 AM Probably about ten in a day when I first got it, mainly because my previous car did'nt have a working horn. So everytime I clean the car I forget that the horn works and I make the horn go off several time in the process.
sexyscionlover 05-10-2005, 02:44 AM none... how the hell do you drive bud? :lalala:
sorry but i just think its weird :P is any one else accidentally doing this also?
i only do it when im ____ed at sh*tty drivers. i dont wave either, i flickem off because im angered :come:
x475aws 05-10-2005, 02:56 AM I've accidentally blasted the horn a few times while backing up.
NewXBowner 05-10-2005, 03:02 AM i've done that countless times.....it really is touchy
Willis 05-10-2005, 03:04 AM I've only been driving my xB for a week...but so far, I have never hit the horn by accident.
I have had trouble trying to hit it when I wanted/needed to honk at someone though!
I guess it is just something you have to get used to...
Sometimes I put my iPod shuffle on that dash thingy, when I go to grab it, the horn always goes off.
kcs_xb 05-10-2005, 03:11 AM i hit my horn by accident about once a week! dont know how it just happens it usually scares the s**t out of me
xBaum 05-10-2005, 03:23 AM almost evey time i turn. i always hold the wheel on the left where it joins the horn and do the stick out a finger and tun the wheel thing. first time it happened on the way home from the dealer it scared the living beegesus outta me.
djct_watt 05-10-2005, 03:49 AM Just when I park in San Francisco, and aggressively turn my wheel
bB626 05-10-2005, 03:49 AM i havent accidentally hit the horn yet. but my mom always hit the horn like about 3 times a day...
Once today, and once last week... and I've had it for nine months.
Sciond 05-10-2005, 04:08 AM never happens...
ugly_duck 05-10-2005, 04:10 AM haha i hit mine all the time. is a good thing the horn is beefy.
djct_watt 05-10-2005, 04:19 AM It's better to have a horn that sometimes goes off by accident than a horn that doesn't go off when you want it to.
DarkBoxJr 05-10-2005, 04:43 AM I thought I was the only one who did this! It bothers me so much, but it beats having two little buttons for the horn like my Volvo had. Now I can just smash the entire wheel in my regular fits of rage while driving around.
talich 05-10-2005, 04:44 AM I didn't even realize that I have a horn when I did that in the first day! Now a week passed I press it maybe three times, I think. :P
ScoobyVan 05-10-2005, 05:16 AM Never...
AdioScion05 05-10-2005, 05:19 AM almost evey time i turn. i always hold the wheel on the left where it joins the horn and do the stick out a finger and tun the wheel thing. first time it happened on the way home from the dealer it scared the living beegesus outta me.
Ha!! same here, prolly 2-3 times a day, I finally just disconnected it. Whats funny/sucks about it is I never really used my horn before, but now I seem to need it all the time.
none... how the hell do you drive bud? sorry but i just think its weird. is any one else accidentally doing this also?
Of course you don't hit the horn, you drive a cardbaord box! :P
At first I kept hitting the horn with my rather large hands but after a couple weeks now I'm getting better at not doing that. It would have been nice if Toyota used a stiffer set of springs but I guess the Japanese have dainty hands.
SciFly 05-10-2005, 07:30 AM I never BLLLLATT hit the horn by accidBLLLAAAATent
xBino 05-10-2005, 08:01 AM I wonder if it's as easy as pulling out a fuse to disable it...
xBeepbeep 05-10-2005, 12:19 PM never here either
superfreestyle 05-10-2005, 01:13 PM well the japanese hand theory is out, they have the same steering wheel as the MR2 which is not touchy at all. When I am working on radio mods or anything in the driver seat I hit that stupid thing but it is cool cause I have an "Ooga" horn and it makes people laugh.
dgHotLava 05-10-2005, 01:24 PM i have never hit the horn by accident...
you people must have some wierd driving habits to be hitting it so much.
are you doing yoga in the car or something???
metro 05-10-2005, 04:56 PM Yeah, now I can tell my gf im not the only one, she thinks I do it because of road rage but not all of them are because of road rage, that thing is sensitive. Most new cars are that way unless they have the buttons
AllMyT 05-10-2005, 05:26 PM I HATE MY HORN way to sensitive.. i did it at the gas station today when i got outta the car.. guy in front of me gave me a diry look.. im bout to make a stopper or suntin for the back of the god damn thing...
Shoof 05-10-2005, 05:35 PM I never hit my horn by accident either...
Joehnn 05-10-2005, 05:55 PM Repost,
but a lot.
Old_Punk 05-10-2005, 06:34 PM When I try to fill out a deposit slip at the ATM.
But what bugs me more is the door lock button on the window sill. If I reach out the window the wrong way at an ATM or drive up window, my arm hits the button and locks the door, which I don't notice until later when I try to get out of the car. This is my first 4-door car since 1970. With 2-door cars, the door is wider so the lock button is further back, out of the way.
Oh well, it's always somethin'.
DisneybB 05-10-2005, 06:40 PM I thought I was the only one who did this. My thumb hits it when I hit a bump sometimes or turning hard. Worse thing is I'll do that but when I need to blow it I reach for the middle. OOOOPs my old car was there!!
PaganGuy 05-10-2005, 07:10 PM I hit mine alot in the begining, but not as much now. But i still feel like an idiot when i do it, lol
scionchic 05-10-2005, 07:11 PM I've done it a few times when I was backing up. And, yeah, it does scare you half to death.
mike51392 05-10-2005, 08:25 PM it happens to me all the time im use to driveing a 95 jeep xj and it didnt have a working horn so - tu sabes
Sprso_2 05-11-2005, 12:14 AM I read this topic yesterday and thought of how oddly funny to be hitting the horn accidently; then today I hit MY horn by accident, & damn near laughed my butt off. Of course I was by myself. So, never say never all you perfect drivers!
enigmon 05-11-2005, 12:51 AM I have a tC, and this has happened to me also. The way i drive, i have my thumb resting on the bar of the steering wheel. Once, I was driving a honey home late at night, and she told me that her dad was staying over visiting, so i'm backing out, and my thumb accidently pushes the horn (the whole middle of the steering wheel is horn) and at 2:30 a.m. it is LOUD. Lights come on, dogs barking, anyway, we had a good laugh about it after her dad went back home.
djct_watt 05-11-2005, 04:44 AM Hey. . . off topic, but are air horns legal in CA?
SciFly 05-11-2005, 04:58 AM djct_watt:: you enjoy negative answers, or whaaat? http://img135.exs.cx/img135/8674/aarotalaff4am.gif
Hey, i really like the horn button design. I like to drive in the city with one finger on the horn ready to blaaaaaat if a crisis comes up. less reaction time. Now, being in that habit for all my driving life, I like the ergonomics of the horn.
suggestion to those who hate it: practice and see if you can't like it better? hands and people are all built differently.. but as one guy said earlier: better to have an easy to honk horn than one you fumble to reach when you are in an accident avoidance manuver.
cheers, chumps! I never, neverBLAAAAAAT oh shi..again! sorry!
:P
djct_watt 05-11-2005, 05:26 AM that's what I originally said. . . and huh? I don't get it.
Chele 05-11-2005, 06:37 AM Set it off all the time. I am starting to do the wave like I know the people glaring at me. But I do appreciate how well it works when I have to lay on it to get some idiots attention.
SciFly 05-11-2005, 06:44 AM that's what I originally said. . . and huh? I don't get it.
apologies; I was not clear: the smilie is only at your air horn questoin: -everything- is illegal in California, right? That's sort of a given. Illegals are legal in California, is the only exception, right?
laffing sounds? no, OK-- the jk is kinda rank of me
djct_watt 05-11-2005, 07:02 AM hahahaha ok. . . so it is illegal I take it? Never really looked for the "off road only" disclaimer on air horns. . . was thinkin of gettin one.
1BIGBOX 05-11-2005, 07:03 AM I seem to only hit my horn when i am turning, the first time it happen my grandma was in the car and she asked me who the person was that i honked at a, i just laughed.
Tomas 05-11-2005, 07:38 AM Usually once or twice a month when I'm leaning to reach something while parked, or otherwise accidentally give a fairly light pressure to the 'active' part of the wheel.
So far I haven't managed to 'Meep!' at anyone by accident while driving.
http://tijil.org/roadrunner.wav :D
i thought i was the only one to hit it on accident. I hit occasionally. the tcs very touchy.
lpfan57 05-11-2005, 08:46 PM lol, I have the same problem, i hit it atleast a few times each day, and I as well, get startled when I hit it!
VShalla 05-11-2005, 10:30 PM when i first got my xb i hit it all the time but now i never hit it at all.
twors 05-11-2005, 11:16 PM Well, I've had my xB for 3 weeks now and I just went out to the garage to see if my horn even worked :eyebrow:
Max2k 05-12-2005, 01:44 AM I hit it when working on the car. It's always startling. I think the neighbors hate me.
gslippy 05-12-2005, 07:00 AM Never.
BOXCAR 05-12-2005, 02:04 PM :silly: I've only hit it a few times accidently. I do hit it on purpose sometimes with the mandatory finger just to say Howdy to some of to non-driving mo-fo's around dallas.
BumbleBox 05-12-2005, 02:20 PM I hit it almost every day when I'm pulling out of my parking space. I have to make a really sharp left turn to get out of the parking lot and I almost always manage to hit the horn on the way out. My crazy nosy old neighbor lady always peeks out her window when I do it, too. I think she thinks I'm trying to mess with her mind lol
jaewon223 05-12-2005, 03:54 PM tC horn is very sensitive and it covers like the entire steering wheel so sometimes i honk it by accident also. ig uess xB is the same. but i got used to it so i am more careful
SUPASCIONXB 05-12-2005, 04:10 PM never
SciFly 05-12-2005, 04:19 PM Why not do something about the annoyance?
this idea applies to automatic transmission scions only
suggestion:
- Disconnect the steering wheel horn switch.
-Operate the horn from a momentarty contact push button switch -by your left foot-
Put the switch on the dead pedal (foot rest) . We'd need to find a very hard pressure switch which allows the toe to rest on it but -does not blow- until real pressure is applied
you follow me so far?
This is just what I did to the old Model T coupe. Model T almost requires three hands to drive at times. The column mouted horn switch is just not convenient to reach when it's really needed. I did not use the electric starter in that car; I hand-cranked. Now, the starter button on a T is on the floor. It looks like an old time -headlight dimmer switch- (these were also on the floor) but is right next to the left heel while driving. It was very easy to hit that starter button by accident, where it was. It made, therefore, an ideal horn switch, once I'd removed the unwanted electric starter.
The safety aspect: The automatic transmission auto does not put the driver's left foot to any work at all. SO, employ your left foot to operate your horn. Voila. It's really works well, this system! You have your foot resting ON the horn button all the time when in city traffic (if you desire).
-horn reaction time is cut in half or better- Time is of vital essence in an emergency situation. You must be masters of your horns. It must sound even if you just jab anywhere.
A -lot- of cars require a hard, precise push in some certain spots. I do not think that's so safe.
Some of us here suppose that Toyota makes the horn switches sensitive for a higher purpose than convenience for clumsy or big hands.
Because I get along with my steering wheel horn button (I rest a thumb on one of the silver push-bars whenever driving in traffic), I do not need a foot switch. But it could be done and would be rather EASY, fast to find even if the foot does not happen to be on the dead pedal when that child runs in front of your car some day.
Tomas 05-12-2005, 06:05 PM Ah yes, back to the days of the foot mounted starter switch. :)
Actually a dead pedal horn switch would defeat the reason I'm driving an auto instead of a stick - my left foot is unreliable.
The stock Scion horn switch is very sensitive, and covers a wid area of the wheel-center, but it merely taked some getting used to.
As you say, it is preferable to have it easily found and easily activated than the opposite.
Now if the stock horn honked instead of meeped...
Mooneyzs 05-12-2005, 07:46 PM I've never accidently hit the horn yet.....
itsMrChris 05-12-2005, 10:35 PM LOL I had to laugh as soon as i saw this thread!
I hit my horn all the time on accident!
Probably cuz I hold my wheel mainly at the T intersections (3 and 9 o clock)
message4messich 05-14-2005, 03:15 PM I logged on to post a thread like this! Good thing I did a search first. I ALWAYS am hitting it! I also hold at the 3 and 9 position. Its a hard habit to break.
redxeth 09-19-2005, 10:10 PM Yep-- about once every couple of days!
Kristina 09-19-2005, 10:23 PM The horn on the xB is extremely touchy. I can't speak for the other scion models, but I think my record is about 5 times in one day. I usually try to laugh it off and wave as if I meant to honk. I never quite get used to it and still get startled for a second each time. What's your record?
I've done it a couple times.
mamagoose 09-20-2005, 02:27 AM so far I haven't had problems in my xB... but I do in my dh's tC. He keeps asking me why I am beeping the horn. I just tell him because I want to. :lalala:
CitizenSanexB 09-20-2005, 02:51 AM hahaha, this is very funny. i've done it numerous times, but one time is most memorible.
I was in the Wendy's drive thru, just goofing around listening to some music.. some heavy band, and i was waiting for the car infront of me to order. i was drumming on the steering wheel around the horn area and all of a sudden, "BEEP!".. i hit it. but the funny thing is, when i wasn't paying attention, the driver two vehicles ahead of me was out of his truck doing something.. so it seemed like i blew it at him when i actually wasn't blowing at him OR the car directly infront of me. i waved when both drivers look so they'd think i was just blowing to be friendly or something... who knows. i died laughing though..
that horn is REALLY sensitive.. but it's kinda funny. sometimes when i think about blowing the horn and i act like i'm gonna press it.. the air between my hand and the horn is enough to set it off... ha ha. good times.
Sciond 09-20-2005, 03:42 AM still have yet to do it...
whosgeo 09-20-2005, 01:12 PM I've done it several times. First time, I didn't realize I had hit it and I thought "What jerk just beeped at me?"
scionxbgrrl 09-20-2005, 02:21 PM I've hit it about five times in the last month by accident. The one time I wanted to honk at someone for cutting me off I couldn't get the damn thing to honk! But that was also when I was driving it home from the dealership too....I don't know what I was hitting....
INSIDEOUT 09-20-2005, 03:55 PM I hit that darn thing like 8 to 10 times a day it is so touchy it is not even funny!!!!
BiggSugg 09-20-2005, 04:07 PM I'm just happy that I'm not the only one who is constantly hitting the horn. I do it all the time when I'm turning.
sprslug_182 09-20-2005, 05:17 PM I never hit my horn on accident, I have an aftermarket steering wheel. This only proves to be difficult when randomly trying to honk at hot chicks. It takes some precision to find the horn button sometimes. Damn the tall people with big hands.
upshift 09-20-2005, 06:54 PM I'm just happy that I'm not the only one who is constantly hitting the horn. I do it all the time when I'm turning.
Particle6 09-20-2005, 07:52 PM once or twice its very sensitive
