Nothing wrong at all with an auto. It is ALL about what you want. Congrats and enjoy driving, while drinking a cup of java with no hurry to shift.....It is an "upgrade option" for a reason

if your not going to race , you might as well get the auto . Autos are better for just cruising around and stuff like that . But if your intention was to race then you should have went with the stick . Especially if you plan on doing engine mods like FI , Me I opted for auto , traffic here sucks and you spend more time sitting and idling then you do driving it seems . Just my two cents

Its all up to preference for daily driving. And the tC is one of the few cars that offers better mileage with the Auto, so you can enjoy slightly better mileage as well. Enjoy your new car!

Good choice. I would of done the same in that situation.
I still recommend trying out a stick one day. Once you have it down, it's alot of fun.

Automatic transmissions are better for stop-and-go driving. Manual transmissions get better fuel economy on the highway, but they suffer in stop-and-go driving. Clutches wear out faster than most automatic transmission parts, resulting in more repair costs.

I've never had a problem with my clutch wearing out prematurely in 15 years of driving stick in New York City, but I can totally understand people going for the auto. Congrats on your new car!

im surprised at the warm welcome you've received for getting an auto. at first, i expected an auto transmission bashing session, but im glad to see otherwise.

anyway, i got the auto too, and i love it. its great for cruising and enjoying the ride.

also, stick doesn't get better mileage on highway. this was discussed in another thread about the RPM at certain speeds. because of the ratio in the auto, i get around 2500 rpm at 65mph, or something like that. at 3000 rpm, i go 75 mph.

thread is here: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...&highlight=rpm

On the tC this is true. However, in most vehicles, an Auto gets better mileage overall. The difference on the tC is the gearing. You can tell a ton of diference in the auto and manual on it. In general, on trannys with comparable gearing, a manual will have the better mileage and lower failure rate. But if you take good care of either one they will be fine. Nothing wrong with getting the one you like!

Wow now I'm scarred about getting my stick. I ordered my 5spd FM 3 weeks ago. I'm in the same position you were...always drove an auto. I know how to drive stick, but my left leg is always tense because I haven't always been confident in my shifting. ..but I've never driven one for more than 2 days at a time. Maybe I will get better if I drive it longer. I think I'm going to go test drive a 5 spd at the dealer just to make sure it is what I want.

congrats on the new car, i will say though once you drive a stick youll never want to drive an automatic again! IMO there a lot easier in stop and go travel because you dont have to hold down the brake you jsut put it in neutral and use the e-brake.

also the auto might be easier to sell when you do sell it

Fpr me, i will never buy another auto! i hate em.
to each is own

i dont get how this is easier to do than stepping on the brake... when traffic goes (left hand on wheel, right on shifter), you have to shift into first (right hand), release the ebrake (right hand), step on gas, and when traffic stops 5 ft later, shift to neutral, apply e-brake. how is that easier than stepping on brake, step on gas, brake, gas, etc...

oh well, not bashing, just wondering why you said that. my friend drove like that last time we were in the city, and during rush hour traffic.. his car would buck because he didn't give enough gas. but when he did, he came REALLY close to the car in front of him. he's got a spec-v and 5 years experience. not fun in my opinion.

i guess the traffic i get stuck in is different ususally i can roll slowly in 2nd with my foot off the gas and off the clutch and just smoothly roll it might not be easier but IMO its easier flirting the gas and clutch then decreasing and increasing pressure on a auto brake pedal,
i gotta say its completely preference my fiance loves manual trannies, but hates them in traffic so every bodies different. im sure with 5 yrs of exp. he knows what hes doing but ive had a manual tranny for over 10 yrs
so Hah!

im better and cooler! j/k

It doesn't make sense. it 's just trying to justify the stick shift. The fact that they are e-braking to stop in traffic should tell you something about their driving experience. They also don't mention that after you coast in neutral and use your e-brake, then you have to shift back into gear accel, shift back into neutral, e-brake, etc. etc. It has NOTHING to do with ease of driving, it's just attempted justification of the stick choice.

First, the stick ISN'T any faster if you can't drive it well. Many people will argue that but it's the truth. If it causes you stress and takes away from your driving enjoyment, do you still consider it fun?

I think driving a stick is an important skill to have but it's not this huge difference of driving or riding like some will try to claim.

The funniest part to me is to take a look at the Did you buy a Manual or Automatic thread and see how so many stick drivers feel the need to put down the auto but hardly any auto drivers feel the need to diss other's choices...
