View Full Version : Got it...Cam-Con

I got it today.
just opened the box and inspected it.

its nicely packaged and well protected for shipping.
the unit itself is smaller than i expected.
3.5 inches wide
1 inch high
3.25 inches deep

about 1/4 din i'd say...

on the back is one plug connector for the wire harness and a bank of 8 dipswitches.
the wire harness has 11 wires in it.
some of them (7 of them) are pre-terminated with male/female bullet ends.
one ground wire and a red, blue and green wire without ends on it

the only supplied mounting method is double sided foam tape.

the instructions supplied are detailed, but in Japanese...
was cautioned this would happen with the first shippment state side.
it does have some diagrams that will help. like the many ECU's with the pins you need to tap.

my camera is at work, so i'll take pictures and post up in 24hrs...
i'll also put it in on Sat with a follow up on that process.

ok, i put it in this morning...

pulled the glove box and ECU...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/dgHotLava/PICT1323.jpg

making the connections on the ECU wire harness...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/dgHotLava/PICT1324.jpg

tested it before i put everything together....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/dgHotLava/PICT1325.jpg

all done...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/dgHotLava/PICT1328.jpg

took it for a test drive...it threw a CEL...not happy.
brought it back home and double checked the connections. they were fine.
i figured out that it was not set right for my set-up...
took a little bit to learn how to make the setting and make them for my car...

now it runs good with out throwing a CEL.
i need to get it on a dyno to get all the power i can from it...

the nice thing about this unit is you can turn it off and run from the ECU.

you can def. tell its working...

i did not get a chance to fully tune it...you would really need the dyno to do that.
i did make some base settings, they seem to let the car run a little better.

i will not get to a dyno for some time...i am having the tranny worked on next week and have a big show next weekend...

all i am allowed to say is that i got a good deal....

is it worth it? that depends how much you like HP!
if you want to unleash all the hidden HP in your lump...you should really think about picking one up.

D,

how's the actual vvti controller working out? Is it similar to apexi's v-afc as far as adjusting the vvti engagement in 200rpm increments?

I'm debating on wether i should pick one up or not, but i'd only be using it to control vvti since i already use my e-manage to tune my a/f.

it works pretty well.
it controls the vvti at 15 points @ 500 rpm increments...adjustments are by 1 degree increments.
(it really does it at every 100 rpm, but you can only make settings at 500 rpm steps)
i woyld perfer to have one device to control both...but i know your set-up, and this would work out well.

hmm....i think i need to jump on this, e-manage works well for what it does. But with vvti adjustments i may be able to fine tune a bit more and maybe catch up to your hp level. ;)

Thanks for doing the grunt work. 8) Get it on a dyno soon to make sure you're not doing anything bad. :nails:

There is a write up on the Power Enterprise Camcon in the JULY 2005 Issue of Import Tuner. It starts on page 125!
There is also a half page add from Power Enterprise about the Camcon on page 151 of the same issue.

I thought VVTi was just valve timing. I guess I should be more specific... what about spark advance/retard?

dgHotLava
05-17-2005, 10:59 PM
yes, i should have been a little clearer too.

vvti is the valve timing.
there is no way of doing the ignition timing with the cam-con.
the ECU still uses the knock sensor and such to adjust that.

but the valve timing adjustment can be advanced to compensate for the ing. timing being retarded....

The camcon unit control the air/fuel ratio like the SAFCII

So What's the difference between SAFC-II and the Cam con ?????? cause you can get a SAFC for 230 at ebay.....what the price of this new unit ?

dgHotLava
05-23-2005, 07:50 PM
cam con also controls the VVTi...
i have seen it for 325 in a group buy here (look in the sponsered sales section)
and else where for 370ish
MSRP is 419

the camcon controlls the cams as well as the a/f ratio where the S-AFCII controlls the a/f only you can fine tune the a/f with the S-AFCII better however and it will also give you digital displays of other things like rpm, voltage, throttle position, knock sensor, correction percentage, and other stuff.

Wow wow wait a sec... I thought cam control was for VVTL-i systems only is that right ????? so for VVT-i the unit is just like the apexi one ????

JoeDarkness

The camcon unit controls VVT-I and VTec and A/F

I read in the instrucion manual (english version) provided in Power Enterprise that does not support the VVTL-i

Ashe_WCM

From what I understand from the articles and the Manual, Camcon controls Intake Timing, be it VVT-i or VVT-iL however it will not control Lift.

and does not control the driver too... :lalala:

Instructions in english were sent with my CamCon from lastlookcustoms ( A+ Buisness in my mind ) so i will be installing it shortly. What i did notice is in the pic on page one he installed it on the underside.....BAD IDEA! The vents to keep it cool and not overheat are on the top, so id suggest not mounting it like him. I never use the easy bake oven in the center console so im going to find a way to mount it in there, especially so when i get pulled over for speeding its not obvious and i get fix-it tickets for aftermarket parts

cant wait to see how your install/tuning turns out. hopefully you will see some good gains despite others lack in power increase!

vents????

there are plastic ribs that look like vents, but the unit is completely sealed.
no vent holes. ant the unit does not generate any heat that i can detect.
just by it being in the cabin with me it will be at a safe temperature.
