View Full Version : Strup header and Exhaust install-xB UPDATED WITH PICS
Thiat302 05-15-2005, 11:40 PM Will post more later (some pics) but,
I installed the header and exhaust yesterday- on a scale of 1-10 I would say a 4 with some really tough to get out bolts! If you dont have a breaker ratchet and a lot of muscle, forget about getting the spring loaded exhaust bolts out! I swear I almost pulled the car off of the jack stands trying to get those babies undone!
The sound is incredible and the power is noticeable in the higher RPM range-
The only thing Im not happy about is that fact that the shifter linkage was sitting right on the header and started to deform from the heat- So I went to good 'ol Pep-Boys and bought some handy dandy universal steel tie up and pulled it up and out of the way- It doesnt look great, but keeps that linkage from melting- I wish strup would come up with something to help that out! I dont want to fiberglass wrap the header because it looks sooo pretty!
The exhaust is a 10 minute job, jack it up- lube the hangers, and bring it down- nothing to it-
In the end it looks hot, it sounds hot, and my overall rating would be an A- (- because of the linkage)
The promised pics:

I would have taken more but I was too anxious, and my fiance drove away with the camera! Lol
Dont mind the finger prints on the header! lol

I had the same problem with thoes spring loaded bolts ... Thoes were a PAIN to do ... I can't wait to see some pics!
Charlie at Strup is a great guy, you should give him a call and mention the linkage problem ...
Let see some pics!
LavaBox_v1 05-17-2005, 02:10 AM Looks nice ... you should clean the finger prints off the headers ... not good for the finish!
joe52985 05-17-2005, 06:24 AM i have no personal experience with strup products and i am NOT bashing, im sure its a quality product but i have a couple of questions
dhow do you justify paying almost 400 dollars for an axleback? I payed a little over half what you did for a great sounding quality product, and had 2.25 mandrel bent piping run from the cat back, and still not at 400.
I dont get how the price is justified but thats just me, maybe my budget is a little less. it does look pretty, ill give ya that!!!
is that 4-8 hp on their website backed up with a dyno?, seems a little high for an axleback
hotbox05 05-17-2005, 07:57 AM I feel the same as you do.. i'm sorry but i still can't stand how it's pointed upwards and towards the outide.
aireck 05-17-2005, 08:01 AM almost like the DC...
Thiat302 05-17-2005, 11:15 AM I didn't pay that much for it, I bought it from Fujiz.. PM him for his current prices. I cant say how much I got them for, but it was an AMAZING deal!
Its not angled upwards, thats just the way I was laying on the ground when I took the picture- and the end of the driveway there is a downward slope and I was laying on it.
To each his own my friends- There are probably some things on you Box that I cant stand! lol
It is backed by a dyno, if you tool around on the website you'll find the dyno-
LavaBox_v1 05-17-2005, 11:39 AM Also partshippers.com has it for $305 and they have a $30 rebate on it ... which makes it $275 ... Also the quality of the welds and bents are second to none ... your "custom" exhaust does not have a FULLY polished finished & its not tig welded ... You pay for these things ...
Here is the link with the rebate .... Its nowhere near $400 ...

Thiat302 05-17-2005, 12:15 PM Well put!
Fujiz_xb 05-17-2005, 03:14 PM im glad you like them.
eggie 05-17-2005, 08:23 PM Any clip on the sound quality at take off?
I had a bad experience with headers and will never install them again unless it is on a V8
Thiat302 05-17-2005, 08:28 PM As soon as I can figure out how to take one Ill post it-
I'll also add that Strups Customer Service is Top Notch!
They have someone coming to look at my car next week so they can check out the linkage! A++ in my books!
I really mean it sounds amazing when I say that! No tinny bumble bee noise here-
Its not V-8 Growl but its a nice growl!
hotbox05 05-17-2005, 09:01 PM tig welding is not needed on exhaust pipes.
FrankenScion 05-17-2005, 09:19 PM tig welding is not needed on exhaust pipes.
Do you ever say anything positve?
hotbox05 05-17-2005, 10:03 PM sometimes
Fujiz_xb 05-18-2005, 12:55 AM i cant get the bolt off at the end..its is extremely hard.
any pointers.. screw it im taking it to the shop tommorow..my stupid jack wont clear it anyways.
LavaBox_v1 05-18-2005, 02:39 AM tig welding is not needed on exhaust pipes.
It is needed for a cleaner look, after a few weeks regular welding rusts ... tig welding does not rust ... yeah its needed unless you want rusty exhaust!
Fujiz_xb 05-18-2005, 03:30 AM so when i go to the shop should i let the weld or no?

I wouldn't know i'm in cali warm and sunny. one of the few perks in this smog hell hole.
LavaBox_v1 05-18-2005, 10:50 AM It rusts becasuse of the rain and the weather ... No matter where you live ...
hotbox05 05-18-2005, 12:02 PM It rusts becasuse of the rain and the weather ... No matter where you live ...I've yet to see any well done mig welded exhausts around here rust. oh well. tig welding is a plus but not needed was my point.
FrankenScion 05-18-2005, 12:18 PM so when i go to the shop should i let the weld or no?
If you're just installing the standard Strup, you shouldn't need any welding done.
Fujiz_xb 05-18-2005, 01:24 PM thanks..its just the axle back..thats what i tought..i need to make sure the shop knows that.
FrankenScion 05-18-2005, 01:28 PM It's very easy to install, I just installed an axle-back on my friends xA. As long as you have a jack and a couple of hand tools, you're set.
Fujiz_xb 05-18-2005, 11:25 PM Since im on tanabes literally the muffler is 1.5 inches of the ground.. i get 18 inch rims on friday..hopefully that gives more clearance..if not im screwed..
btw.. the sound is incredible..
to bad the owner was around but the guy was gonna give me a special deal.
50.00 oh well worth my happiness
