The real reason is that rally cars will replace their sunroofs with them so they can still get air into the car but, without the added weight of a glass roof. Also, Rally cars will get rid of a/c so it can get quite hot and smelly in there. So there you go, like every other tuner trend, its to mimic something that actually does have some purpose....but, generally is only done to LOOK like the original. A perfect example, is aluminum wings.
