View Full Version : 17"s NO GO
GotBoxRevised 02-26-2004, 10:25 PM Ok, I just got rims and tires. I got 17" rims. I am now regreting that I did this. After I put them on I went to back up and heard a grinding sound. I stopped and jacked the car up and popped the wheels off to notice something in the back. A rod goes from one back wheel to the other, and at the weld point their is a small (quarter inch) excess metal that will grind away at your rims. I only found this in the back. So I called the place where I got them at and they told me that they only tried putting 18" rims on the Scions. After we did some measurements with the extra inch your rims with bypass the excess metal. So I would not recommend putting 17" rims on any Scion without checking that weld on each end of the rod going between the tires
DibujoB 02-26-2004, 10:44 PM wow...i've never heard of that before. We've put a lot of 17 inch wheels on scions (mostly xA's, on our xB's we tend to do 18 and 19 inchers)....never had a problem.
Wierd. Have you tried filing down the weld???
Scionic 02-26-2004, 11:28 PM What offset and width are you running?
I've had two sets of 17's on my car with a 2" drop and I haven't had a single problem.
yanges 02-26-2004, 11:30 PM i have 17's with no problems at all....
maybe your wheels need a spacer or something.....
scionaraxb 02-26-2004, 11:30 PM I'm betting he's got 45mm or more offset.
runforestrun 02-26-2004, 11:33 PM I'm betting he's got 45mm or more offset.
I double-down on that bet!
scioninla 02-26-2004, 11:36 PM I have 18's and 19's..no problems...
even 20's with the right width and offset is ok..
What offset and width are your wheels?
ScionVan 02-26-2004, 11:41 PM I'm betting he's got 45mm or more offset.
BINGO! The wheels are either 7.5" width at 43mm or more offset, or if they are 7" width, their offset is at least 48mm or more.
What really sucks is that there's no way to return those wheels after some damage like that. =X
Scoobyslack 02-27-2004, 12:23 PM that would be 7.5" wide w/41 or more offset....I have 7.5" wheel w/42 offset, they touched that attachment point. I just got some small 5mm spacer, works fine now.
just get some spacers and use the wheels....that damage is on the inside of the wheel, you won't see it
iy0ga 02-27-2004, 01:50 PM So whats the recommened offset and crap for 17 inch rims?im hopefully gonna get some mr7s 17 in but havent ordered it yet.
onemorescion 02-27-2004, 03:28 PM His rims were a 7.5 width with a +42 offset
squirrel 02-27-2004, 03:58 PM I have 17x7, 42 offset, and 205/40-17 tires and I'm not rubbing in the rear.
I'd go w/ a 3 or 5 mm spacer now since the wheels aren't returnable.
Just my opinion like anyone would care!
bBted 02-27-2004, 04:11 PM oh man...offset again!!!!
do a research on scionlife or ask our wheels specialist Mr. Van (scionvan) before u make ur decision...
scion can take pretty low offset (+20) without any problem...
range from +20 -- + 42 depending on the width too...
im running 16x7 (+40) without any problem...so the place u bought it from dont kno what they talking about!
TheRedBox 02-27-2004, 04:34 PM You should replace the rear studs with.. i think tundra studs..
then get a 10mm spacer. =)
Or you can try a 5mm spacer and see it that works too. I'd do the first one.
CBSIMONSEZ 02-27-2004, 11:43 PM B4 I order my wheels, im getting a 17"x7.5 with an offset of 40. According to the list on this site, this should be Khoser. Im also leaning towards a 215/45R17 Yoko Avid H4. How close to the inside OR outside will this rim put me?
Any comments, gripes, suggestions? The guy im buying them from said they would fit, and the chart says they will too. Hummmm :?
<== hates this whole offset topic thread, im so lost
Vegasscion 02-28-2004, 12:10 AM Its probably the offset your running i got 215/45/17 with a +40 offset and goldline 2" springs with no problem
Mark
BlueBox 02-28-2004, 12:51 AM weird...
i'm running 17s with no prob at all... rather i think it's abit small for the xB... i'm thinking of going to 18s.
i have 215/45/17 with 40mm offset.
i need bigger wheels.
boxhead 03-31-2004, 09:31 PM Got the TRD 18's....they look sick!
Got the TRD Springs as well.
If you get wheels make sure you drop it!!!
