View Full Version : which alarm to get? OC_Scion 03-02-2004, 07:47 PM hey all, i am looking into getting an alarm for my xB. what alarms out there are the best for it? mikochu 03-02-2004, 08:05 PM a 9 foot python in your back seat =D My parents' old accountant has a Porsche 911 Turbo. No alarm system, just a 9' python named Bertha... I'm actually wondering the same. I might buy the Scion Security system just to stay "stock." You can find it online for like 280, and install it yourself. I'm just wondering if I break the warranty if I install it myself. I'm not going to pay 500 bucks to get the Scion Security system installed in my xA... scionspecialistvegas 03-03-2004, 12:09 AM Give it a couple of days Scionspecialties.com will be on line with do it yourself alarms. Bill Turner BoomBox757 03-03-2004, 12:14 AM I just ordered the lynx 2000 from www.asianwolf.com someone told me it works well. its an alarm a remote starter and it can even roll your windows up, all for $200 scionspecialistvegas 03-03-2004, 12:47 AM you will need a module for window roll up, did you get the optional 2 way fm pager? vpkb 03-03-2004, 01:04 AM i got the Viper 690vx two way alarm, comes with a cool remote miamijdm 03-03-2004, 01:13 AM i urge you guys to get a 2way pager alarm.. I personally like the clifford RS3.5... Nothing like being somewhere that you cant see your car, but the control lets you know whats going on BoomBox757 03-03-2004, 01:22 AM you will need a module for window roll up, did you get the optional 2 way fm pager? it comes with a 2 way pager. when I ordered it it said pick a free Item and I chose the window roll up module. I got it from www.asianwolf.com CRxB 03-03-2004, 04:38 AM One question tho...do you have an automatic or a stick shift? because some retailers won't add a remote start on a manual car just FYI. As for your question on which alarm to get...ask yourself what you would like it to do e.i. remote start/roll up&down windows. I have the Audiovox APS-996 two-way pager remote start with 6 aux outputs on both my CRX and xB. Yes the rex is stick but what can I do I'm an installer and a lazy butt to start my car. hope this helps, hubert unlmtdndeavor 03-03-2004, 07:00 AM it all depends what you want. they make an alarm for every level of security. up to gps tracking. i am personally getting the Viper 791vx. http://viper.com/security/viper/viper_responder.asp CRxB 03-03-2004, 07:24 AM it all depends what you want. they make an alarm for every level of security. up to gps tracking. i am personally getting the Viper 791vx. http://viper.com/security/viper/viper_responder.asp I like that system too and install alot of the 790s. but the only drawback on that is they only give you one remote. And also that it only has 2 aux outputs on it. Unlike the Audiovox APS-996 ..:click me:.. (http://www.audiovox.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=1613995&langId=-1)which gives you a two way remote and a regular one way also 6outputs so you can control everthing you can think of i.e, windows/radio/neons/even air ride systems. One draw back on both systems is that the remote colors are painted in and not with the plastics and that it cost $50+ to replace the two ways. hubert o4_USDM_bB 03-03-2004, 07:39 AM im gonna buy the clifford matrix 3.5 or whatever... we sell it at best buy, and it'll be the first alarm i install. it's probably identical to the viper systems people are referring to, since they're both made by DEI. just like they said tho, it has two-way paging, extended range, remote starting, and only comes with one expensive remote... ohwell. One thing that retail sales/installs have thought me...anything cheaper than retail, take it! anything cheaper than retail thats quality, Grab it quick! Good Luck and if you need anything or questions about the alarm install...hit me up! Just remember you can get almost every wire on top/bottom and behind the fuse panel. Be safe and use a DMM (Digital MultiMeter). Hubert o4_USDM_bB 03-03-2004, 08:10 AM well, fortunately, i get an employee discount, so it'll only be $170 or so for me.... im an installer as well, but i haven't installed any alarms yet, because its been so busy. i want to do the install on the scion first to "pop my cherry," then i'll be cool. i just don't want to break anything. i do have my other installers to help me out tho, so it shouldn't be a problem. thanks tho. CRxB 03-03-2004, 08:28 AM Your welcome, hehehe I remember when I first "pop my cherry" on a remote start... it didn't start on the 1st try. Count to think of it, so did my 2nd oh well... live and you learn. I kept on forgetting to put the starter wire to the starter side and not the key side of the starter relay. Have fun man on your first alarm...I did :P Hubert BoomBox757 03-03-2004, 10:34 AM One question tho...do you have an automatic or a stick shift? because some retailers won't add a remote start on a manual car just FYI. I'm curious to how well it works. I read up on it, and the features are nice, just not sure. I've ran Autopage in most of my vehicles and I'm thinking the same route with the 850 on this car. But that Lynx does have nice features.. :? BCS 03-12-2004, 02:23 AM As I am typing this, an alarm is getting installed in my xA. I got the CompuStar 2WSS-AS. http://www.compustar.org/products/2WSS.html "This Series is the most recent product introduced by Firstech. It is a two-way communication remote pager that incorporates a unique LCD, liquid crystal display, to provide full surveillance of ones vehicle. Due to the unique modulation of this system, based off of Spread Spectrum technology, we are able to provide a range of up to 6000 feet." "CompuSTAR is the first system on the market that incorporates this ground breaking technology into security and remote start systems for ones vehicle. Spread Spectrum Technology has been kept top secret for many years. In fact, spread spectrum radio communications has long been a favorite of the military because of its transparent qualities. Likewise, because this form of modulation prevents jamming and is hard for enemy interception, it will also provide unmatched security and protection for ones vehicle." It's got a 2 way remote, with a 1.25 mile range. It'll page me if the alarm goes off. Or, if I'm in a restaurant and someone needs something in my car, when they get out there they can tap on the window and it'll page me and I can unlock it. It's pretty nifty. hnefrdo 03-12-2004, 02:23 AM viper 650 Radiodude 03-12-2004, 02:48 AM Another good thread.... a oldie I started.... http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=78875&highlight=#78875 runforestrun 03-12-2004, 03:08 AM Clifford G5. Installed Al & Ed's in HB for $299.00 plus tax. 1NZFE 03-12-2004, 03:23 AM With the clifford, does it chirp or is there a silent mode? i prefer silent, more discreet and also if i'm trying to escape I can sneak out...gotta love non-DRL!! elzy0000 03-12-2004, 03:29 AM the best theft prevention system, in my opinion, comes in either a 40 or 45 with a full clip of 10 rounds ShadowMage 03-12-2004, 04:49 AM So...this may sound really stupid but....is/are there specific brands of alarms that are better than others necessarily? Like python, clifford, audiovox, alpine, etc.? Or is this just largly just personal preference/budget driven? Mark1 03-13-2004, 07:25 AM I got the Scion security. It is expensive , but it is also covered by the warrenty. We dont leave anything in the car of valu so the coverage of a aftermarket security is a bit overboard for us. DEI, Alpine, Audiovox alarms comes with lifetime warranty as long as its been installed by a certified installer. As for toyota or any other cars adding an aftermarket alarm does not void any warranty what so ever. If a dealer tell you otherwise...let him/her put it on writing and you might end up getting a free alarm thru them if they write it down. just my two cents, hubert superjeer 03-13-2004, 02:15 PM That Lynx 2000 sounds really nice, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3083635158&category=48611 checkout pointer 16 though "IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO INSTALL BY YOURSELF. " :) mgmlot93 03-13-2004, 05:43 PM Personally, I am a Autopage fan. I have used many of their 750 models and have had no problems. Now I have the new 850 just sitting here waiting for the RS to show up. It is a 2 way alarm/remote start that comes with 2 remotes (one lcd and one regular). I usually get them for somewhere around 180.00 and install usually runs 150.00 by a certified installer that does these "on the side". Good luck. tourvel 03-13-2004, 10:31 PM I just took delivery of my xB today (YIPPEE!), and I am pondering the whole alarm system issue. I have had cars broken into (smash and grab), but this is the first time I've owned a car that might actually be a target for car thieves. The paging systems are intriguing, but . . . Say my car is broken into, and I get paged up in my apartment. What am I supposed to do about it? Run out into the parking lot, yelling and waving my arms? And what do you think the thieves are going to do when they see a small blonde in a bathrobe running toward them? Obviously, I could call the police, but car alarms go off all the time when there is nothing wrong. Do I call first and risk it being a false alarm? What do you guys think? Small Blonde mgmlot93 03-13-2004, 10:52 PM 2 way alarm + gun = no stolen car. Just my theory. superjeer 03-14-2004, 01:04 AM What do you guys think? Small Blonde I'm pretty sure Doc would stop.. or Al from GA. Anyway, that's why you need to have a kill switch on one of the channels of the pager. You can rush to the window and turn off the car as they try to drive away. Fun to be had by all! Docsnuff 03-14-2004, 01:56 AM I'm pretty sure Doc would stop.. Stop what? Doc mgmlot93 03-14-2004, 02:23 AM Stop and help a small blond woman in a bathrobe. That's what he meant. scionspecialistvegas 03-14-2004, 02:33 AM Doc, did you ever get your alarm installed, I 'm sorry i couldn't be more help, I was not familar with that alarm since they switched. I like the alarms from accelle vision alot Scion evo guys are running them, thats what I run and sell. good reliability and reasonably priced easy to install.Bill Mark1 03-15-2004, 06:24 PM I got the Scion security. And I know aftermarket alarms have warrentys. But the Electronics shops arround here ane known for giving problems for warrenty service. But the Toyota dealer is known for its great customer service. So it was a choice of how i want to be treated if anything goes wrong. |
