It might change the sound some, yes. It won't be extreme or even obnoxious.

hmmm... does it make the sound louder, or just different.

if it's any louder, i'm thinking against getting one now

depends on what intake you get . if you get an aftermarket aem , injen short ram , k&n , weapon r , or spfr intake it will be louder and actually you will get about 4 whp out of these intakes.

the dealership style aem and the injen r&d cold air are quieter than the others listed above.

will adding an intake actually lessen my torque? or will it help the box when it starts to not even move around 30-40mph in the transission to 3rd gear

They are stated to increase torque 1-2 hp.

I don't understand the other part of your question regarding the 30-40mph thing. I guessing you have an automatic.

Setup your user profile so we can see what you have installed and have alittle more to work with. HINT: "A Future Scion Owner"

It should be slightly louder in high RPMs, but not too bad.

You will get some better performance and increased MPG, so that's something to think about.

My SR is definitely quieter on my xB than the RD CAI on my Matrix. But then again, the Matrix is a 1.8l compared to the 1.5l

Wasn't ragging like Sauce said, it makes it easier to answer any questions when you have your profile setup. This way we don't have to ask you what you have, we can look and answer you with a little more accuracy.
