View Full Version : Aux Adapter Install (PIE TOY03AUX)

I installed the TOY03-AUX adapter on my stock radio today so I could connect my iPod to the HU, because im sick of making CD's. I took pictures while I was doing it to post here.

Things you need:
- First off, what you need is your TOY03-AUX adapter. I got mine from discountcarstereo. If you dont already have one, here is the link :
http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=548
- Then you need to have a RCA to 3.5mm cable, which you can find at Best Buy, or any other audio/video store.
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Pliers of some sort
- Twist tie or something to hold your excess audio cable
- Double-sided tape

Here is a picture of my AUX adapter, it has two cables, male and female 12-pin plugs, but you'll only need the male.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ipod_tc/001.jpg
]
Next, you have to pull apart your dash. If you dont already know how to do this, remove your shift knob and pull on the sides of the silver trim by the cubby hole gently until it begins to come out. Be careful, the cigarette lighter wires are attached to this piece. You might have to turn on the car and change the gear to drive in order to get it all the way off. Just set it to the side. Next, pull on the silver trim for the AC/Radio Cover part, being sure that the radio door is closed before you try this. Then, hold down the little tab on the cable connected to the AC controls, and remove it so you can move the console out of your way.

Here is the mess you'll have once you've removed the center console:
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ipod_tc/002.jpg

Remove the two screws on the bottom of the radio harness:
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ipod_tc/003.jpg

Then, remove the two nuts on the top of the radio harness:
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ipod_tc/004.jpg

Once you pull out the radio and harness, you will see this. The white plastic is where we are going to mount the AUX adapter, behind the radio:
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ipod_tc/005.jpg

I used double sided tape to mount it to the plastic, because drilling holes doesn't make any sense, then connected my RCA to 3.5mm cable in the side of the adapter:
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ipod_tc/008.jpg

The 12-pin socket that you will attach the AUX cable to is on the back of the radio. Here it is empty:
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ipod_tc/006.jpg

And here it is with the AUX plug:
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ipod_tc/007.jpg

I then dropped my RCA to 3.5mm cable down behind the cubby hole and ran it under the cup holders so I could bring it out the side in a small hole that was already there. You can put it wherever you want, but this one seemed to be the easiest spot to me:

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ipod_tc/009.jpg

Now, place the radio harness back in its spot, replace the screws, reattach the AC control plug and put the console back on, and then put on the cigarette lighter section.

In order to use the AUX device you plug in, hit the DISC button twice on your radio, it should look something like this:

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ipod_tc/012.jpg

Here is a look at my final product:

The End.

I ran my cable up under my ebrake, so you don't see so much of it (just be careful of keeping it out of the way of the gearing of the lever - mine runs around the cup holder).

And I have the 90 degree angled plug so it doesn't stick out so much. You can get one with the angle at Radio Shack or any other electronics store as well.

Other than that, I have the same setup. Same adapter, mounted in the exact same spot.

Both of you might want to consider this (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=201526&pcount=&Product_Id=149006) item. I purchased it with the intent of cleaning the entire set up and it works like a charm. You'd have to make a small incision on the inside bottom of the glove box though, which might be somewhat of a deterrent for some.

This may sound like a dumb ?, but by hooking up your iPod this way does your iPod sound better? I have mine hooked up by iCarPlay adapter by Monster. I'm assuming since mine is wireless, the sound quality isn't great. I hear ya on making cds, no thanks. Custom Playlists rock! BTW- VERY informative post! great pics and descriptions! GOOD JOB! :P

This will make it sound a LOT better than any FM Transmitter.

MrBridge... I really don't think I'd have a use for that. I don't want any more wires cluttering up more than I have to. I don't really need to charge my iPod in my car b/c if it gets even close to dead, I just take it out and leave it in the dock overnight and then take it back to my car the next morning for work.

dctennis10
06-10-2005, 04:21 AM
The only advantage of having the car adapter is that it has the 3.5mm jack and it gets the audio from the dock connector so the audio is unamplified, unlike the headphone jack. im guessing this would just save you from jacking up the volume past 20 to hear it.

Speaking of Monster, I haven't seem mention, yet, of the iCruze (http://www.monstercable.com/icruze/) from them...

It does the same connection of the iPod to the head unit, but ALSO allows the head unit to control the iPod.

Anybody tried one of these yet?

What clutter? You plug into the power adapter and the adapter plus into the ipod. Still only one cord, just with power capabilities. I use my ipod all over the place so keeping it charged is always a must.

Shrug, different purposes and applications, but I didn't know about these until someone pointed them out to me.

Looks good. I suggest using the line-out via the dock connector for the best quality sound. SiK, Inc. makes a dock connector line-out adapter: http://www.sik.com/din.php

I added this to the tech section.

No... that's two cords. B/c your audio is still plugging into the power adapter, plus you have the power adapter cord. I'd prefer to stick to just one. Plus... I have a 4th gen iPod, so I get my full 8 hours, easily.

I was also considering the
Griffin AirClick (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1337363&Sku=G600-1040&SRCCODE=GOOPROD&CMP=OTC-FROOGLE) as an option to keep the ipod hidden from view.

That price is the cheapest froogle has shown so far.

Here's my set-up. I drive an xB so I just put it in that little cubby in the dash. In the picture I have the i-trip for my ipod mini, but I used the TOY03-AUX with the RCA to 3.5mm cable output and I just drilled into my glovebox and up into that cubby, but you can kinda see from this angle how easy it is to just go through the glovebox and into the cup...it looks clean. :lalala:

I've never had any problems changing the songs, there are also two cup holders in front of my stick, but I didn't want a passenger to goof around down there while I'm driving, so I put it in that cubbie. I'm tall so I have long arms, anyone under 5'10" might have trouble? So should I say there is a height requirement for this mod? But anyways, I've never had any problems, the problems I used to have is carting around my collection of cd's, now I don't have that problem! :lalala:

where is the disc botton? do you have to install this thing before you can get to the point where you can get to the disc button? i've pressed cd, am, fm, and xm(nothing happens when i press xm, is something messed up?) and i don't seem the button.

you know what's great about the 2006 tC. the upgraded stereo with steering wheel controls and an auxilary input so you don't have to add one yourself. *glote* but on my lebaron i used to drive i added a wired FM modulator to play the music from my PSP. the quality will always be less, unless you have an aftermarket stereo with built in aux input or ipod controls.

Just a followup within this thread. I purchased and installed the USA Spec piece and, aside from a minor electrical issue, have been pleased with the performance of the unit.

Most will be pleased to know that the Griffin AirClick has worked as expected without issue. I first mounted it to the steering wheel but it interfered with where I place my hands on the wheel. I have since relocated it to the emergency brake (turned so the buttons face the side of the seat) and it's fairly inconspicuous (despite its colour).

I'd definitely recommend it to those who want a RF remote to control their iPod while keeping it hidden from view.

Get the metra Axxess piece. You can pick it up at Circuit City for $59. It will work if you have xm radio because there is an input and output for the aux bus. It also has 2 aux inputs which both can be used even if you have xm. It uses disc 6 track 1 for aux 1 and disc 6 track 2 for aux 2. XM will still work fine.

The USA Spec box I put in my xB only worked once. I installed it at night, and it worked OK, but the volume was only about half of what I get from the CD or radio. When I got in the car the next morning it didn't work at all. Crutchfield was good about taking it back, as they always are. But I'm not getting a replacement. I ordered the PIE model, and I'll let you know how it sounds. Might even post a pic of the panel mount mini-jack I'm using.

Update: The PIE thing sucked, too. It would work in the morning, but not later in the day, and vice-versa. Very unreliable. And when it did work, I could only get 1/2 volume from it, compared to CD or radio. These are not the way to go.

Ordered a whole new receiver with a front panel Aux input. I'll let you know how that goes. One of these days I'll get it right...

I'd say its CD quality if you balance the volumes correctly. Just use common sense and put the iPod on 1/2 to 3/4 volume and then put your stereo on 30+ and it'll be great quality with no feedback or anything.

I custom built a panel-mount minijack to dual RCA cable for the AUX input. It is mounted in one of the removable blank switch covers that are just above the ashtray.
It looks really clean cuz when your .mp3 player is not in use, there's no wire hanging around; just a small 1/8" hole.
But with my new HU, I won't need it anymore, so if anyone wants it, you can have it for $10. And you have to send me the switch cover you take out, so my dash won't have a hole in it.

Hey there every one, First car I have ever had, First Mod of 3 planned. I have had my car since Dec. 04 and I love it! This was my first mod ever on any car and due to this post, it went off without a hitch!
First I didn't get the TOY03-AUX adapter, I looked at the bottom and got USASpec DF-TOY. It has 2 inputs for about the same price, but you CAN NOT USE AN EXISTING 6 CD CHANGER OR ANY KIND OF AUX DEVICE. Since I got my car stock, I didn't have to worry about this. After installing the USASpec DF-TOY, I made 2 cords, I took two a 12 foot long RCA to RCA cord from radioshak, and cut it in half. I then got two 3.5mm or 1/8th inch Female Chassis Mount connectors.
After I cut the cord in half, I soldered the 1/8th inch connectors by tying the ground leads together and then there should be a diagram that tells you on the chassis mount connector which pins on the back are Ground, Left, Right. OR 1,2,3. Usually 1 would be Left, 2 would be Right, 3 would be Ground, I just plugged in my cord and used my multimeter to determine which was which.
After you make the cords, all you need to do is drill a 1/4 inch hole somewhere in your console where you want to put it. I put mine on each side under the cigarette lighter adapter. You might have to use an exacto knife to clear away some of the shavings.

After the install, i plugged in a 1/8th inch male to 1/8th inch male cord from radioshak into my ipod and worked great! you have to turn your ipod up all the way and the radio to about 35 for a good sound.

Just wanted to Thank Everyone who posted and helped, I hope I can do the same!

dctennis thanks for the awesome walkthrough! I did this a few months ago and it works like a charm. Only problem is the radio cover squeeks a bit now when opened but that's probably my fault.

these directions worked out awesome and were really east to follow, i had it installed, put back together and working in about 30 minutes.

A couple of things to note, my tc is an 05 but has the SAT option on the stereo so make sure you buy the righ auxiliary input piece with the /s
second thing I found it easier to connect the RCA cables and run them out side the dash before mounting the input device.

I have an iphone, so you need an extra part that fits into the recessed jack, so make sure you purchase that, about $10. I have Belkin and its great sound.

Thanks again!

one more note, when i turn my car off and my iphone was on and plugged into the stereo the speakers make a litte pop noise. is this bad? wondering if its b/c i have my iphone volume all the way up and control the volume mainly through my stereo speakers. seems to sound the best this way.
but im concerned with this little pop when i turn off my car without shutting off the radio or disconnecting my ipod first

whats up!? Well I ordered the part.. for the aux input.. when I installed it.. I hooked everything up.. correct, but for some reason the music sounded very distorted. I took everything apart.. trying to diagnose the prob, but could not find the answer! It was fine sometimes, but when I hooked everything back up, the music level went down considerably! (you know how it sounds when you dont have your headphone jack in the mp3 player all the way?) you still hear music, faintly? thats what it sounds like.. but sometimes.. it worked again..? my question... finally, LOL is, could I be getting feedback from my radio? or is it a wire prob ya think? also, the part that was shipped to me looks a little diff. Ill try and get some pics.. does that matter?

note to some people trying to do it. you might need a socket wrench.
