what to paint the muffler

I wouldn't paint, but that's just me.
You'll have to get some really high temp stuff for the muffler.
If you're getting a Magnaflow oval, the muffler shop you are going to should be able to tuck it up nicely so the majority of the muffler is out of sight.

You would have to sand down the finish and then paint it ... I doubt it will stick, between the heat and road grim I don't think it will last more then a month or so ... Then once it starts flaking off its gonna look like CRAP! ... Good luck!
actually 1500 degree paint will burn off headers like no tommorrow . mufflers on the other hand get hottest at like 1100 or less so.......... it would work fine and most of those are thick paints so flaking should not happen as long as you sand the muff first.
