I was fishing through my dad's tool chest and found a old fashioned thermometer (the type for probing meat and liquids). Well anyways, I stuck it in my air vent and went driving around with the AC on.


I have an 05' xB MT. With the recirculate on and with the AC on full blast, my AC went down to 46 degrees F.

With the recirculate off, the AC reached 42 degrees F.

Let me say that the outside temperature was around 70 degrees F.

I am currious if I should condsider have the TSB for the AC performed?

What do you guys think?

 

I notice that when I use the recirculate setting it gets a good deal colder. I'm going to check it via thermometer and will post my findings.

 

I have a thermometer in one of my vents and It is typically is between 40 and 50 degrees. I know that it had gotten down to 45 one day. you also have to consider how hot it can get here in Phoenix.

Normal operating temperature is somewhere in the 40 degree range. When I had my truck it was in the same range. It may of gotten down to 40 at its coldest. I'll have to double check the box and see how cold It will get too.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Sounds normal to me.

Edited to add: You will notice that when you have it on recirculate that it will get even colder because it is taking that air that it already cooled and cooling it more, hope that makes sense. Read your xB manual, it says in order to have max A/C to have it flipped to recirculate.

 

The last few days, I have been working on alot of A/C systems (I'm a tech at a Dodge dealer), and Chrysler's spec for the temps we've had, around 85-90, and the humidity, 75% or so, is 54 degrees, that's in recirc mode, windows closed, fan low, and all other vents closed (except one with thermo in it). I haven't checked my box yet, but some days it feels cold, some days just cool.

 

yeah, I know that recirculate is suppost to make it cooler, but I think that it was hotter in my car at the time, then outside.

I posted this thread because I want to know if any toyota techs on SL know what toyota says is in the "normal" range....

 

damn my ac is no where near that cool. i can tell without any thermometer anywhere near at all. lol i would guess the coldest it gets is like 55. the vast majority of a/c systems are only able to / cut off at 42 degrees.

 

Well, Get a thermometer and check for sure....

 

I ran mine with a digital qauge in the vents. 90 degree day outside, recirculate posistion, after 2 miles city driving it was at 46.5 , after additional 2 mi on freeway it was bouncing between 43.7 and 46.8 at that point swithching between recirculate and fresh made no difference. My biggest complaint is how long it takes to get cold. Not like the old days with R-12 where it was cold before leaving the driveway...seems like the new stuff takes a mile or so.....no matter which vehicle I am driving.

 

My A/C, on my 2005 xB is not good at all.

Gotta get it in for the TSB work.

 

It's been in the upper 80s and 90s in Chicago. I checked mine with a digital thermometer and after 2 minutes on recirc it was 43.3 degrees. The only car I had that was colder was my neon. That car got so cold you had to turn the temp up so you wouldn't freeze. I think the ac works fine.

 

I will test mine with a Fluke meter and will post results later on.

 

i noticed that as well. maybe i'll have toyota take at look at it.

 

In Las Vegas where the temperature has popped the 100 degree mark already, my xB won't get below 50 degrees.
A previous car of mine had A/C work and the man got it to 41 degrees, which he said is as good as any car gets.
So the xB is sub par.
I don't feel a loss of power when it's on, so I bet they could've gone with a bigger compressor...

It's been in the 90's here almost every day this past week with 100% humidity and the A/C is working just fine.

 

I haven't officially tested the A/C in the box, but the tC's A/C is much cooler.

 

I haven't checked mine with a thermometer, but it feels pretty cool. WE haven't had a truly HOT day that I drove the xB to check it. Usually hot day in the midwest means 50/50 shot at storms. 50/50 shot at storms means the box lives in the garage that day and the beater cavalier goes to work. ;)

 

I was cleaning my toolbox today when I found my multimeter, then it reminded me of this thread. It was about 70 degrees when I took the reading.

 

tested mine had before TSB..luck to get mid 40's..did TSB still not that great....

 

There is not one temp that the A/C must reach to be good or bad. One need to test the A/C PER THE REPAIR MANUAL to actually determine if it is OK.

Anything else is quite simply a total and complete waste of time.

If you do the tests correctly, your A/C fails, your S/N is within the range for the TSB's, and you are under the mileage limit, the TSB just might apply to your A/C...

Yes, I did the testing on my A/C - it is within spec. after the adjustment TSB was performed (it was NOT before).

Sticking a meat thermometer in an A/C vent on a 70 degree (or 100 degree) day doesn't tell you anything worthwhile.

NOW: How many of you have tested your xB's Air Conditioning temp?
