Default New CD Player = New Speakers?

If I get a new CD Player for the car, should I get new speakers? And if so, what speakers would you guys recommend? I'd prefer not to get new speakers, but will the new deck blow the stock speakers? Any help would be appreciated.

I think the speakers in our scions are ok... changing your headunit shouldn't blow your speakers but would definitly sound better than the stock HU. so if you wanna do step by step do the HU 1st then subs then speakers...i'd blow my speakers 1st before replacing them IMO...

just my 2 cents,

depending on the HU and it functions, you might hear distortion coming from your speakers if you don't replace them.....I'd replace the HU and see if you like the sound....if not, replace your speakers with some better quality 2 ways or components.....the components will sound alot better than the 2-ways, but you will PROBABLY have to amp the comps..

Generally, the audio upgrade path in cars is Speakers first,
then head unit, then amps/subs whatever.

Our head units and speakers have some distortion in them
that drives me NUTS, but I've not replaced either one yet,
so I'm not sure who the culprit is.

For OEM parts, both are surprisingly nice though. I think I
just push mine a bit too hard, me being used to higher end stuff
at home and in the recording studio.

Try out your new head unit, and see how the stock speakers
handle it.

If you could hear the distortion in the stock setup like I can,
tell me if it goes away so I know if it's the head unit or speakers
I should replace!

Why are you wanting to replace the factory HU? I have about $400 in upgrades to my factory sound system and now have a system that should be stock in any Scion. I went with Pioneer speakers and amp, but you could substitute the brand of your choice. https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=68068

Eric, a guy from my area just replaced his HU with an Eclipse HU and it still distorts a little....it may be fault of both HU and speakers.... I think it's just bottoming out of the rears mostly, but I've only heard it momentarily...so i'm not sure of the overall performance....I know it dramatically increased the image and stage even with stock fronts....

The stock speakers do hit pretty good (best in any car I've owned) but they still need a high-pass cutoff of 80-100Hz. Midranges are just not designed to handle those frequencies and can cause a good bit of distortion. Get bassblockers or get a headunit that has built-in crossover points for your speakers.

i upgraded the front speakers with Pioneer's latest 4" that fit perfectly. I was bl;own away by the difference in sound the new speakers made.....An excellent upgrade......
