Has anyone gotten a ticket for not displaying the front license plate?

The tC looks alot cleaner without the front plate, but I don't want to get a fix it ticket and I don't want to get rolled on by cops.

I drove in CA for 22 years, now have OR plates, I never ran a front plate on any car I have owned the whole time, usually 2-3 cars or trucks, at least 200k miles, never been an issue. BUT, it gives them an excuse to pull you over and if you have anything to hide, then you may not want to take the change;)

If you keep your car fairly clean looking, not riced out, you will have much better luck at not getting pulled over for anything at all!

I live in MA but my plate got damaged in an accident and I got pulled over twice in one week because of it. I am waiting for my plate to come in the mail, I have a permit that allows me to run no front plate that expires 6/06 so until then my car stays plateless.

Good looking out Rick. Yeah, I'm trying to get my ride as clean looking as possible. Thanks for your input.

My friend got a ticket for not having her license plate on the front here in california. $75 bucks. And she has an old 96 honda accord fully stock! so they arent just looking for modded cars.

Yeah, I got nabbed for no plate in sf. I wasn't driving, I was parked and the cop got me at like 2 a.m. They wrote me up for $100, but i got it signed off, and got the price reduced to $10. Then I got a letter a few days later saying I still owed them $90. So i called them and told them what was what, and set 'em strait. I'd say it's really up to you, is it worth $100 any time you get nabbed?

in the 3 years i had my eclipse gst, i never had a front plate on and never got pulled over for it (got 2 speeding tickets though, and front plate wasn't even mentioned). when i bought it, there werent any holes in the bumper for a plate mount to go, so i never bothered drilling into my baby. though, buying the tC, my dealer was kind enough to drill holes into my bumper and put on a plate for me... :tap:

Man if your in LA country its just not worth it.

I have had over 10 front plate tickets issued and this is on a non-modified vehicle and I am a consvative driver.

They are on the mega-crackdown because their red light camera system requres the front plate on some intersections to make ID. (Camera angles and street layout prevents them from taking the rear). This means lost revenue to cities so they are having police enforce the law more.

This came straght out of a cops mouth when he gave me a ticket.

However another big problem is that not only can cops give you front plate tickets but also parking enforcement. If you park your car on a public street in LA county you will be issued a no front plate ticket by the meeter maid even if your meter is paid up. And you know the meter maid *will* come around.

Worth it or not? For me personally not anymore. I fought and resisted up to 10 but this is just rediculous.

i got pulled over for not having a front plate on my car, but i had the plate in my car and i just told the officer that it fell off the night before. the officer let me off with a warning and just told me to get it back on as soon as i could.

but to be honest i see alot of nice cars around here like bmw's with no front plates and they never get pulled over so i think its more of a way to pull over a young kid or like previously stated riced out cars

I just paid a No Plate ticket. If you were ticketed for no front, and it cost what... $75-$100 you must have done something more.
A fix it ticket in CA is usually... $10
plus court and sheriff fees. you can get the CHP to write off your fix at the CHP station, but you still have to mail it in certified.

Or go to the court and pay the clerk.

Total cost will be about $25

If you have CA Plates, you better wear them on the back AND front. It's not worth the hassle.

LAX also has patrols there that just ticket No Front Plate Offenders. No Matter what excuse you may have.

Why bend the rules when the rules wont bend for you?

Maybe you can get away with putting the plate on top of your dash, under the windshield so it's still visible, but not drilled. I keep my front licence plate in my car under my seat, and have not gotten pulled over yet(knock on wood), but I hate the way the plate looks on the front bumper(just read my sig), so i'm freeballin' it, and if a cop pulls me over for just that, he's a real douche. I would tell him that I had special brackets for the plates so that I don't have to drll, but someone stole them and i'm waiting for new ones. Then I would act like I did not know it was illegal to roll without front plates. I also have noticed like Kowsk, BMW's with german plates or no plates and a lot of other cars without front licence plates. If you can get ticketed for that even if your parked, don't park in metered stalls. Otherwise you can just take your chances. I say no, but I guess I like to live on the edge. (just kidding)

Yea you do need two plates according to this site.

http://www.worldlicenceplates.com/usa/US_XLPR.html

dont know if its an official place but an idea.

As a resident of Missouri we do require front plates.
I guess look it up online, i will in a sec

yeah... i've gotten fix-it tickets twice with my old car for not having front plates, and my car was a bone-stock 2001 honda accord SEDAN. so having it riced with attention getting mods or not really isn't an issue, but whether or not the cop/parking lady is having a good/bad day :eyebrow:

I do believe you need to have a front license plate on your car. Whether it can be on the dash, im not sure. I think its all up the the discrection of the police officer that is going to write up the violation. Most are lazy to to hassle you about that, but some are d*cks and want to get you for everything, so watch out!

I dont think you are allowed to keep a license plate on your dash. It has to be in the front. It is a hazard to keep in on your dash since in a car accidednt it can come flying back and slice you head.

I have not recieved a ticket on my xB yet however on the STi I have recieved 4 tickets this year so far. In CA in Los Angeles county they have the parking police do the dirty work. Can you believe that S%&*? So everytime I go to J-Town to drink or eat some Sushi almost 100% of time if I don't park in the structure I will have a ticket waiting for me ($25). I just pay it and I am done with it, I guess its my way of saying m|m to the system.

The same F-en system that gives away modified exhaust tickets to import cars when they have harleys up the arse here that are 10X louder but claim that since the engine is much smaller its is allowed a louder noise. Which makes no sense at all, because noise pollution is noise pollution, the air and people living in the communities care less if its coming from a small engine or not... If you are going to an arse be an arse to everyone equally.

I have my front plate mounted with suction cups, but it's still illegal because of supposed obstruction of vision through my windshield. Anyways, I have only had one cop tell me to put my plate on the bumper, but he was waiting outside the parking garage after the Padres baseball game just checking for drunks, so he just let me go and told me to fix it. I will fix it... when I get a chance. :lalala:

I have no front plate, I say DOWN WITH THE MAN! Hell I barely put on my rear plate after 6 months, LOL. I never run red lights (duh), but I sure did make some yellow ones without fear of photo reinforcement! Usually I would put it on, but I have the Carbon Kit and I love the front with no plate. I have had several cars that didnt have a plate in the front, and of all the cars the only one I got pulled over in was a 93 Lexus ES300! not even wheels on the thing - totally stock! The cop did a U-Turn in traffic even just to get me! I guess I looked like a trouble maker, lol. Damn Racial Profiling! Anyway it ended well, I just got a warning. He probably thought I stole the car, bastard! But I came up clean and no ticket. I havent been as succesful with tinted windows or exhaust, but thats another story. There are just too many cops with nothing to do in my area. Within 5 miles I got Sherrif, CHP, and West Covina Police! And they got ghetto-birds too! So my plateless front is a middle finger to them all! (And now I will not be surprised if I get pulled over tonight on my way home!) On a serious note we support law enforcement, except for those two cops that harrassed me at the gas station, WHILE I WAS PUMPING GAS OF ALL THINGS! ok enough rambling. Save yourself the trouble and put on the plate for cryin out loud.

Dashboard plates are not a solution.

Plate under your seat only makes you look stupid.

I rode 2 years in My MINI... which was a cop catcher anyhow Skull and Crossbones on the Roof, Slammed, Illegal Tint.
Rolled 2 years then was nabbed.

Rolled the scion 25k miles... then was nabbed.
No excuse will work for the cop pulling you over... remember, to him/her it's just an excuse.

California law states you must have a front license plate. I sell cars for a living so I know this to be true. The regularity of enforcement of this law seems to vary depending on where you live. Did you know it's also illegal to have any kind of license plate frame on your car in California? Now that's a lame law that is almost never enforced. I say almost cuz the first time i don't I'll get a ticket for it.

The car didnt have holes or a bracket in the front when i got it from the dealer, and im hoping to keep it that way. Anyone have any experience in tx, around houton area? or college station.

There was some other thread about a similar issue. Not sure if this was mentioned already, but here:

If your issue with the front plates are the holes you have to drill through your precious front bumper, you can buy brackets that attach to your lower grille and hold the plate. No holes, and no tickets. Just leave them off till you hit a state that requires them.

Don't go to eBay for the brackets, get them from one of our family members:

http://www.eight08customs.com/licenseplatebracket.html

Or check the Tech Section for a DIY version:

http://www.scionlife.com/tech

I ran my Japanese plate for a long time and have been without one for easily a year or more. Been pulled over 4 times and they never cared about anything other than writing my a speeding ticket...

i have fought the good fight for a long time, but it's so not worth it in san francisco.

note: i have the front plate attached to the window with two suction cups from wal-greens. it is under 60", which means it is fully in compliance with california state law.

but it doesn't seem to matter.

i am currently protesting two no front plate tickests that the stupid meter maids left for me - legally parked in every way otherwise, with front plate mounted lawfully in window - they just needed an excuse. one ticket is $25, the other is $50. don't EVEN get me started on how much that ____es me off above and beyond the harrassment....

and i've been stopped 3x by motorcycle cops, and ticketed twice.

oh, and the latest. we went to the Golden Gate Recreation Area on Saturday - a national (i.e. Federal) park that is the unofficial dog park for SF. backed into our spot to make it safer for the dogs to exit the vehicle, came back 2 hours later, Federal Ranger ticket on window for $170. why? "no front plate."

i found the ranger and disputed it with him - politely - and explained that in fact we did/do have a front plate mounted in full and complete compliance with the letter of california state law.

and i showed him my highlighted copy of the vehicle code printed out from the DMV web site that i keep in the car

(FYI, it's http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d03/vc5200.htm and http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d03/vc5201.htm)

as well as a photocopy of the previous ticket i had signed off by a cop even though i still had the plate in the front window (motorcycle cops, bad. b/w cops, good.)

he finally waived it, grudgingly, but told me that he was going to "check with management" to find out if he could legally ticket me in the future. fair warning, in other words.

in any case, i am tired of the hassle, and so's the wife. i'm getting one of those front plate adapter thingies.

but i ain't a-gonna mount it in the center WHOA NO! :lalala:

I think it matter's where your driving. Never had a problem in the beach cities, but head east and cops are dicks. One follows me to work everyday pulled me over once for going 45 in a 40, let me off with a warning after he checked my exhaust was stock. Didn't even noitce no front plate.

i'm getting a relocater to put it off to the side. i gotta check with my family (family full of cops) to see if that chit is "legal" enough. i want to tint my windows (because i can get it signed EASILY) but i don't want the hassle of getting pulled over. if i see flashing lights behind me, i pee a little and throw up a bit. hahaha

that "chit" IS legal. My bf has an evo & evo's come stock with a side plate mounting.

I've gotten 2 no front plate tickets in the past 6 months, one while I was parked on campus & the campus sheriff gave me one, & then I got another one on my way to SEMA.

I just bit the bullet & put my front plate on now. I don't want any "exterior" mods that'll give me tickets. I swear the cop may have pulled me over just to check out the car since it's widebody, pink, & he flat out said "license & registration, by the way, WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?"

But, he was nice enough to not make me pop my head, that saved me many more fix-its (fmic, supercharger, headers)......he did give me a warning for my exhaust though.

I'm in San Gabriel, always around the pasadena, LA or Torrance area and I don't have the front plate but I've never been pulled over for it or received a ticket for it-- One time I got pulled over for exhaust on my teg and the cop mentioned that I might "want to put on" my front plate, but didn't do anything... and I've had the front plate off since '03 :)

I think that petition is stupid. They want the front plates on for the intersections with the cameras on them. What good would those cameras be if there was no plates to capture on film? I always thought that the placement on your front bumper didn't matter as long as the plate is on the front of the car. Personally I'm going to try and move the plate down somewhere to the side then put plugs in the holes it leaves.

I mounted mine on a bracket on the lower grill. but since my car is in the shop, im hopping they dont drill holes on the new bumper for the plate so i can just not have a front plate. Ill probably keep it in the glove compartment, and if i get pulled over ill just say that i never got holes drilled for the license plate and i dont want to do it myself (even though im a DIY'er) lol

most of those cameras, at least around here, get a shot of the back of the car too. But in any event, the front plate law in CA most likely won't ever change :;sigh::

so is it illegal to not have your front or rear plates if you just got a new car and your license plates havent come anyways? or do you have to leave those factory plate frames and that stuff on

As long as you have the DMV documents in a pouch in the lower right corner of the windshield you should be OK. However, it may be a good idea to leave the dealer tags on so you don't get harassed.
