So I was thinking about reviewing the 2005 xB on epinions and ran into this. http://www.epinions.com/content_167835569796
Ignorance in full bloom. The other reviews are all positive but this one, geeze.

Author's Product Rating

Pros
comfortable seats, enormous headroom, cargo space, purchase price, expected reliability

Cons
BAD FUEL ECONOMY plus no: side airbags, daytime lights, rear discs, sunroof, hybrid model

The Bottom Line
Bad gas mileage - skimpy safety features - bad ergonomics - I expected better!

This is such and ignant rating on the "gas consumption".

Wow, he's a real *****. The car is amazing! It gets great gas mileage and I don't think that running daytime lights is that big of an issue! The car is perfect!!!!!!!! I don't know what his problem is.

I have read every Scion XB review available and this one is the NUTTIEST. Almost every review is favorable, asking for an armrest or more interior light. But this guy, and his daughter, are NUTS! Daytime running lights? He is too lazy to flip the switch. I want to control some things, seatbelt and headlight use. This guy has never been to a drive-in. Read all the other reviews, google XB reviews and enjoy.

I agree with the part where he says the cruise control is difficult to use. However, he goes on and on about it like its a dealbreaker or something...

We get 38 MPG - my wife is the main driver of it and she babies it.

I didn't read the whole thing cause it is so long, but I get about 32 - 34 in my xB and that's probably the best or second best out of all of the cars that my family has!

my only beef with the xb is why'd they have to just rob engines out of an echo and shove in a box whena 1.5L dual cam engine with a variable valve system could easily make more power and retain great MPG with a little R&D. Even 125hp instead of 108 would make me shut up.

Take the XB and redesign it to be more like the Echo. Wait a miniute, wouldn't that make it an Echo???? Whats more aerodynamical---a box or and egg---hmmmm. Yes, make the Box into an Egg!!! That will solve the problem.

162whp is plenty to get you from A to B quickly. I reached only 173whp and 169wtq on my boosted 02 civic (d17a2, 11lbs, ball bearing T25) and she ran 14.1s on heavy 17's (23lbs) w/ street tires all day long at the track.

162 is oh so nice alone..........vrOOOOM......WEEEEEEEEEEE!

I read this same review about a week ago and got so worked up. This guys is an idiot faulting the car for silly things. When I got to this point: "Had I realized the xB lacked daytime running lights, I probably would not have bought it.", I had to stop. I sum up the xB/xA this way: For the money, I don't think you'll find a better [new] car.

I did so much research on the xB before I bought one and just about any review called the car "most wanted" or "great buy" or "editor's most wanted". After driving around my xB for about 800 miles, it has become more and more fun everytime I get behind the wheel.

This guy's short, pudgey, balding, wears thick glasses and has a moustache. Never trust a man with a moustache.

First of all, I have no sympathy for people who buy a car and then "discover" features (or lack there of) after the fact. You just spent friggin' $15k and you don't know what you car does (or doesn't) have? C'mon! If DRLs are so important how come he didn't ask in the first place? This guy is a perfect example of buying a vehicle without truly doing the homework before the purchase.

As for the fuel economy- this guy needs a wake-up call. EVERY VEHICLES EPA RATED MILEAGE is typically listed WAY above where it will normally perform. If you read the print underneath it clearly says that this mileage is not guaranteed. The most ridiculous sentence of all: "I plan to sue." Whatever. Learn to read.

Tool.

This is known as "Buyers Remorse". He wanted something different and didn't do his homework up fromt so he ended up with something that didn't meet his expectations. Therefore in effort to avoid blame for making the wrong decision, he's going to show Toyota by bad mouthing them and suing. What a Dick!

I just don't see how a 52 year old man can comment about the "youth markets" opinion.
And he must have hated every car he owned until like '95 because of no day time running lights being offered before then..... (95 is an assumption so please correct if you know)

What an IDIOT!!! I sure didn't know you could sue due to less than estimated gas mileage!!!
I loved the part where he was going to sue, got the dealer backed into a corner, ready to grab their ankles just to shut him up, then he decides to keep the car because it has headroom. He doesn't need headroom, he needs a larger seat because the location of his head is curiously near the location of his wallet!
As for DRL's, if everyone had DRL's, how would you know when the funeral procession was over?
It does sound like he wants an Echo loaded up witth every Lexus option there is. All for <10,000.

Not meaning to offend, but I am glad that I drive an xA, so there is no chance that anyone will think I am this guy.

Audi A4's with the 1.8L Turbo are only doing 150, so a box doing 162 is going to move just nicely.

I came across that lame review a month or so ago when reviewing scions. thats just how people are. when I got my jeep it was the same way, the people who KNEW what they were buying loved it. the ones who expected more than what they bought hated it. Some people are just ignorant and nothing can ever be their fault or good enough.

in other news my gf orders a tC the other day, they call her back last night and tell her she wont be able to get in an 05 so theyll just go ahe4ad and order her up an 06

This guy is full if sh$T. He wanted to buy an SUV but it's pricey and fuel economy sucks. So he bought the Scion becuase he expected to get 33mpg on mixed driving but he really is getting 27-28. He's probably driving the car rough on a daily basis. He also mentioned that the car have no day time running lights, well wake up dude! There are many many small cars out there that don't have day time running lights. and I can't believe he was trying to compare the xB to an Echo. I wish they posted his e-mail address so we can all let him have it.

What a moron. This just goes to show that you can't please everyone, try as you might. He just got a car which is the best bang for your buck in the under $20k range anywhere and still finds things to _____ about.

Not having rear disks?!!! Give me a damn break. The car weighs 2400 lbs and has a 108hp engine, what do you need rear disks for, especially when it has 4 wheel ABS and EBD!!!! The dude even contradicts himself by saying it seems to stop very well. No sheeit sherlock.

Daytime running lights?!!! Are you kidding me? I hate those things. Here's a simple solution to that problem for this asshat.....
1)reach down to the left side of your steering wheel.
2)locate the stalk coming off the side of the steering wheel.
3)twist the end of it.

There, your lights are now on. Moron.

Who in their right minds would _____ about approx 30MPG? He even said that he was looking at SUV's before. Show me another car that gets the xB's MGP, has just as much cargo room, just as many features standard and a $15000 MSRP. Hell, the estimated difference in gas you'll spend each year between an xB and a Prius is less than a few hundred bucks, and the Scion is 1/2 the price.

This guy needs to be slapped silly.

This guy is a total joke, he complainted about auto head light, no side air bag, lack of power, coppy ride, etc etc etc.... I mean c'mon....its a good car, the reason that hes complaining because he probably get this car, thinking that wid the funky look, and it'll go fast....lolz....the only thing that he doesn't kno is that he only spend 15k, i am happy with my box, i've had 2 cars before this one and none of them came close...the VW Beetle is good package and all, but every bits and pieces of defect made me sold it, as for my civic....well....its good and all, but when it comes to like ppl, they messes wid u cuz u lower ur civic wid nice rims, i got rid of that....lolz....and now i'm a happy camper, wonderin why he still hasn't sell his car yet....

he also mentioned going 50 on rough rd trying to drink coffee.... HELLO? you are not suppose to DRINK AND DRIVE? espically when its hot.... my bro's prelude had the suspension stiffer then my car and i still drink hot coffee when i'm driving it on rough rd no problem...all it takes is SKILLS....   oh yea....he also complained about the lack of power...um....did anyone tell him that its only a 1.5?? do that math dude!!

In conclusion, I just think he is a typical :loser: with wrong sense of mine.... why? because hes comparing the box with Camry and Avalon.....lolz...those two cars are more expensive and are totally different creatures when compared together.... why doesn't he compare his Camry and Avalon to a MBZ? it will be fun to see what he will write....

his 'opinions' are wrong. like for example in his opinion the front wheels intrude into the foot space, which you would have to be a stone cold idiot to think that. this guy (probably you) posted so much misinformation about the car its rediculous. granted he has opinions that are legitimately his like lack of daytime running lights and side airbags, but 90% of the stuff he wrote about was either dead opposite of the truth or so whacked out (6 inches of ground clearance not enough? dragged the bumper off? etc...) its hard to take anything he says seriously.

Maybe daytime running lights saved his life once and HE BELIEVES in them. Enough to write and document his feelings.
How do you know the 6 inch clearance is enough room for his needs?

wow, by the way you are standing up for him, you would think it was you... Oh, and what does he do to make six inches of ground clearance not good enough? Off roading?

Maybe you should read my feedback again, I point out the things that are OBVIOUSLY false, and offer him options that would make his problems go away.

sheesh, this is odd, this seems to be the only bad review of an xB I can find. First of all, you say "lack of daytime running lights (a serious safety shortcoming)" how is it a serious safety shortcoming? Just turn on your lights when you get in the car! You seem to be just picking at this car, trying to find any little thing you can to complain about. Who cares if there is no hybrid model? does every car have to have a hybrid model? Is that a sign of great status in your book? And a sunroof, they are trying to keep the price down on these cars when they are stock, you can get a sunroof aftermarket for less than a thousand dollars. And your comment about the dark fabric on the interior, if you dont want it to get hot, get a sun shade and tint the windows darker, it makes a difference, belive me.
You also say "Obviously, Scion needs to hire some Italian designers if they want the youth market." and "Toyota wants to sell Scions to the youth market, and they may do fine with their xA and tc models. The xB, though, is a massive failure from a "youth" perspective" Have you not noticed, Scion has the youth market. We youth love it, it is you parents that hate it. And then for my Favorite quote :"lack of 4-wheel discs, and lack of a neat paintjob" Lets tackle the disc one first, with only 108 HP the xB does not need rear disc breaks, the drum breaks use less energy, and you say yourself that it breaks just fine. And now paintjob, "lack of a neat paint job?" show me a car on the market that comes with a "neat paint job" stock. Scion is all about customization. These cars were built as empty canvases for the young minds of my generation to work their magic on. And we have, and we LOVE them. Scion does have limited release colors, the R.S. 1.0 Hot Lava, and the R.S. 2.0 Solar Yellow, and that is only the xB. Please do your homework. You should have done it before you bought the car. Ha! “Respect other people” then call someone an “ignorant moron”. That’s classic. And an ignorant moron? Isn’t that redundant?

Well, I wouldn't say he loves his xB, but at least after 15K miles he now recommends it. The issue with the rear drum brakes and I assume most of the other things he disliked are still there, but at least he discovered his wife's lead foot on the gas was responsible for the poor gas mileage.

Personally, I think his review was well-written. True, he seems to be an overly picky person and writes as though he thinks he's God's gift to someone. But, I'm sure those who read his review will understand that since he's most definately in the minority.

When I was doing my research prior to purchase, I took a look at his review just to see why the heck anyone would rate the xB less than 4 stars.

tom tom...I see traffic ahead, can you suggest an alternate route? (sorry, I couldnt resist)

he says he has to reset the drum breaks...I have never once had to do this, and I have had mine more than a year. And if he wants disc breaks, do a conversion.

Maybe his wife likes to stop as fast as she starts and the brake linings are wearing out quickly :silly: .

Yeah, it's not easy having a nickname that corresponds to a big GPS company. Notice their logo is the hands - I've got the drum.
