I'm not sure if you guys know or not, but Unorthodox racing is supose to be comming out with a pully set for our cars in the next month or so. What do you guys think of them as a company when compared to Perrin (the other underdrive available)?

well, they dont make under drives for our cars yet, just light weight pullys, so if the pully is lighter than the perrin one it might be a good buy

unorthodox has been making them longer than perrin and they are good. very expensive but good.

does anyone know where are Perrin pullies made?
Xbilly

where did you get the info from, is unorthodox making a SET of underdrive pulleys or a lightened crank pully like perrin.
on a side note what is the concensus on the "harmonic balance" issue is the perrin really safe to use?
KangaRod
07-01-2005, 07:06 AM
I spoke to Unorthodox directly. I am not terribly concerned with the harmonics issue because it is cheap enough to replace the 1NZ in the future (if it becomes an issue).
I never clarified, if they were just lightened, or underdrive. I know Unorthodox shies away from underdrive usually - so I would assume they are only lightened.
Is it worth the money for the pully though. I know I have seen quite a few with the Perrin at least.

people like it. it's a good mod.
as far as harmonics? the stock pulley would be a crappy harmonic balancer. besides motors nowadays are blueprinted. and pretty balanced out the box. or in the box shall i say. lol

I have been running my pulley for a few months and its fine...no extra vibrations, no noises from off balancing. I would definitely reccomend the perrin pulley if you are lookin to get a few more HP.

its a cheap enough mod too. Maybe I'll give it a shot

the only real differences between the perrin and stock pulley design is:
the weight
the spokes
and the timing marker
So unless the harmonic balancing issue has to deal with weight .. there should be no problems

Aren't these motors internally balanced? Someone in another thread posted they spoke directly with a dealers service department and Perrin and the concensus was the motors are internally balanced.

Unorthodox does make good stuff but it is usually very expensive. I have some stuff from NST, www.NonStopTuning.com and I have really enjoyed the resutls. NST has a new pulley for the tC and there are some rumors that xA and xB stuff may be coming as well.
As far as pulleys go, here is some basic info. There are two benefits that can be had from an aftermarket pulley....
1. More HP. This is a result of Underdriving. Less power is sent to the accessories and more is left to drive the wheels.
2. Better throttle responce. This is a result of less rotational mass. You build the pulley using light weight aluminum instead of the heavy steel that Toyota uses.
To get more horespower AND better throttle responce you have to get a pulley that does BOTH.
KangaRod
07-06-2005, 05:14 AM
Wouldn't lightening the recopricating assembly improve horsepower aswell as increasing throttle responce?
Perrin does state clearly:
The PERRIN Performance™ lightened crank pulley for the Scion xA & xB is engineered to reduce rotating mass, increasing horsepower and torque.
The PERRIN Performance™ pulley achieves power and performance by reducing the rotating mass of the crank assembly.
Everything I've always read puts a huge emphasis on lightening the recopricating assembly for increased horsepower. Underdriving would help, but obviously they felt the gains wern't worth the added stress on your engine accessories.
I ordered my Perrin pully today BTW. Should be in next week. I'll let you know how it goes.

well every blueprinted motor i've come across was internally balanced. maybe just on newer jap motors and semi newer not ancient euro motors.

I just checked on http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/ and it seems they have a pulley ready for our lil engines. Its an 'ultra S' underdrive pulley.
I spoke w/ a Unorthodox R&D guy about a week ago and he said the pulleys wont be released for a few moths, but its gonna be a whole set, not just the crankshaft pulley. I might get to try out the prototype on my xB as long as things go well :lalala:

Suhweeeet, Underdrive, or all lightened?
07-08-2005, 04:25 AM
underdrive pulleys might not help us at all. We aren't really pushing a lot of HP. Maybe the guys that are pushing the turbo would benefit, but not the regular guys.

If you get the Perrin pulley, make sure its a version 2 pulley!

Version 2 is the only thing available from www.PrecisionMuffler.com and is also available for shipping. Easy to follow instructions and can be installed here at the Scion Central!! :D

Version 1 didn't fit correctly , so Perrin redesigned it and I guess is now called V2. The Perrin pulley fits with no problems whatsoever. :D

The first pulley Perrin released had fitment issues, and the second go around is supposed to fit fine.
IIRC, Dave(dghotlava) or Munch discovered the problem, and then had to wait a few months for the updated version.

I've had the perrin pulley for a couple of months ... I havent had any major problems... But theres something wrong because my engine will just drop about to 500rpm when I'm at a complete stop ... It doesnt it intermittantly ...

yea...it was Munch...he wasnt too happy w/ them cause they kind of danced around the issue saying that it fit fine which we all knew wasnt the case

it looks like "ultra s" is part of the underdrive series, so those looking to run an S/C in the future should probably stick with perrin on this one.

Its pretty much hard to see...you can only tell its on the motor cause of the color difference in the pulley. If you look at your block, it will be located on the left side, on the bottom.

if you dont know... what it looks like or what does it do ... Why change it out??? when you dont know, what your changing ??? Sounds( very sorry to say it )Like your riding a Ban Wagon ...

I think he is kinda in the process of researching, dude. how can people learn if others refuse to disseminate information? This could be this guy's first car, it could be the first car he's ever done modification to. I thought this forum was for sharing knowledge and opinions, and is a good place for people to learn waht they don't know yet.
sorry if I am wrong.

Yea to what he said^^^Wraith, its very obvious from reading a lot of your posts in the power hungry forum that you are a very knowledgable person when it comes to motors, especially w/ toyotas. Instead of using your knowledge to prove people wrong or shoot them in a direction on why they shouldnt do certain mods to their car, you should use it to help further their education and explain the benefits and features of these mods that might help them choose whats right and wrong for them. Remember, we all started where they are, and we all got here by asking questions and trial and error. Not in any way trying to start a war here but just try to be a lil more helpful in the future to people like this...it feels great when you know you made someones day by helping them out w/ something or just giving them good advice. 8)

yeah, dude, just trying to figure out where the stock parts are so i know what it is and what it does. i've already learned so much from these forums, and this is my first car and the first car i've modified, i've put on my own intake and everything, soon to be some new headers, and trying to gain more power out of my engine, just wondering if anyone has any pics of the item and where it's located, geez. from the info you guys have, i could make a informed decision if this is the way to go with my box,

The pulley is located behind the inner fender liner/splash panel, on the passenger side of the car. Its the lower pulley and if you don't have a two post lift, then you'll have to remove the front tire to get to it.

I understand where your coming from... But I started out knowing the basic inner works off a motor before modifying them... Look I help build and put together a 12second Drag integra in 1992, when I was 16... And I didnt know what the hell I was doing but I learned hands on... I've always been helpful to people that have the basic knowledge of what parts are in the motor. look around www.toyotanation.com or www.echodrivers.com ...
I've never refuse to give out useful information to people. Alot of times I trip on people because they do 1) Give out wrongful information , which can cause someone their motor. 2) Add mods to their cars without knowing the basic knowledge of what the part their replacing does or do.
Figure it out, if you really serious and if you call your self an enthusiast you would look and start reading and researching. Alot of information on the forums are good. But the majority of the information given out are way wrong. I mean look at it this way I've been playing around with suspensions on the echo chassis for 2years now. And I barely finally got it right. After 7 sets of suspensions, 8 pairs of springs, 1 re-valve job and 1 de-stroking the shocks... It all comes from hands on and researching stuff from books, magazines, internet, and actual conversations with professional racers...
I apologize if I came on strong but thats my honest opinion when someone ask what a pulley is and he wants to replace it with an aftermarket one... He has no idea the effects it cause his motor.
