View Full Version : How long before a brake change?

I was just wondering how long it took before your scions needed new brakes. I have not even hit 15,000 yet and my brakes are due. Is this early? Are there any recalls on brakes, calipers, etc? Or am I just driving my car too hard? lol

you ride your brakes too much....
brakes should last much longer than that under normal use...

I've read here that others have had their brakes done around
15k.

I'm around 9k now, and I'm a LONG way from needing new
pads. I can't imagine burning mine up at 15K, but that's just
because of the way I drive.

Upgrade your pads and don't pound on the brakes so hard at
the last minute (like most drivers do) and you should be fine.

lol, that is what I thought. I am always in a hurry and usually drive too fast so it is prob my fault.

Should I upgrade my pads and rotors or just pads? What are the best pads and rotors (either or) to get for the XB?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Also just a quick question. I have to take my car to get an oil change and I was wondering what the going rate for brake pads are at the dealership? Has anyone had thier brakes replaced at the dealer?

I'm at 18k+ and my pads still aren't squealing.

as far as replacing rotors and pads, or just the pads, have a shop check out your rotors. i can't imagine they'd be warped, but typically that's the only time you HAVE to replace them (and even then, they could probably be turned).

but there are some really cool looking rotors out there, and larger ones can improve your braking performance. i've seriously thought about putting larger rotors on my wife's car because she eats pads the way she drives.

Well I called my dealer and setup an appointment for tomorrow to have the oil change done and told them that I only had 14,4XX miles on my car and needed new pads and the lady told me that it would be covered under my warranty cause the wear is premature. So I guess it is not going to cost me a thing to have them replaces so at least I have some more time to save up for my BIG BRAKE kit.

Thanks for the replys.

Big brake kit!! man I hit the brakes hard and throw myself into windsheild. I plan to get slotted rotors, kevlar pads and stainless steel brake lines when I need brakes. Of course it really helps to be married to a auto technician. It just costs me some labor if you know what I mean.

Hey Disney. I just bought the Scion xb manual if you need to borrow it!! Very interesting reading and very impressive engine. Toyota sure knows how do do their homework!!

Yeah, I admit that the big brake kit will probably be overkill for the Xb but I am into showing my car and going to shows and the bigger the better when it comes to shows. Plus it never hurts to have too much braking power.

Yeah it will look nice for sure. You will be able to stop on a dime and make change.

Hey newtmaker, I pm'd ya!!!We'll have to get together sometime.

Suzanne,

thanks, I just got a call from the dealer and my pads were deffinately gone. They tried to tell me that it may have been due to the aftermarket wheels but I told them that I just put them on like 2 days ago. lol

They are going to replace the pads and do a rear brake service and oil change all covered under warranty. However it seems that wheel max did not properly balance my wheels and there was some vibration on highways. So I have to have them rebalanced and it is costing $100 from the dealer but wheel max will accredit $80 back to the card I used to buy the wheels.

Just an update.

I'm in LA and Orange counties in traffic all the time, and have almost 5k on my vehicle.
They checked the brakes and I was 10mm on the front and 4mm on the back... I wonder how much longer they will last.
I had the Element go for 23,416 miles and the brakes were still great, and having half those miles in the Washington DC area traffic.

Yeah< I'm not too sure about my brakes right now on the xA

umm....slotted rotors wont really help you with stopping on a dime...accually prolly make ur stopping worse....slotted and drilled are for high speed breaking use..not SLOW speed braking

wow $100 for wheel balance is too much... they have rim tire package with balance for liek 500bucks for 17in upgrades

sciondude410

Yeah, the wheel balance cost $99.95 and they said it was because of the "Road Force" machine they use. I did not understand cause with it being a state of the art machine it probably required less work to balance the tires. I think it might do all four at the same time or something. I am not too worried about it cause www.wheelmax.com reimbursed me for $80 of it.

Well I own an 89 Z24 as well and I used to go through pads pretty quickly too. So in my case it might be my driving. lol

I don't plan on getting my brakes done at the dealership. i'm going to see what kind of pads the guys down the street at firestone have.

My xB has 22k miles, and at my last service, the dealer wrote "Front brakes 75%" on my paperwork... I'm pushin' 18"s since day 1 too.
