Like many......I've had the problem with the crooked tailpipe.......blowing nasty black soot all over my bumber. After I jacked up my car to take a look........I decided.......HEY.........why not just scrap that monstrous, heavy POS of a muffler, and run a straight pipe, with a decent tip.

So......I did. Only thing I still need to get is some exhaust hangers........cause I forgot to buy them when I was buying parts.

The setup actually has a really nice sound to it.......very low and pleasing while cruising, and a nice aggressive growl when revving high.

Maybe it's just the placebo effect.......but I feel like I've got a bit more peppiness. I wouldn't doubt it with the freeing up the flow by removing the muffler. Plus....that muffler is pretty heavy. But then again.....maybe it just SOUNDS faster.

Anyhow......here's the pics (sorry, some of these aren't the best, it was dark out):

that's crazy. props to yu for trying it. this is sumthing i wouldn't try just because most others aren't doing it, and im guessing there is a reason why. i don't kno wut reason that is. i'd like to hear how loud it is.

oooh, I like the tip. I'mma get one when my stuff is on the car.

i dont know man but how the hell u gonne get that thing past inspection

KingLou

I live in vegas. Not much in the way of exhaust "loudness" inspections around here. I had my muffler hacked off on my Volvo for years........no one ever cared. When I got the car smogged..........they just stuck the sensor in the pipe where I cut off the muffler. And THAT THING sounded like a bloody jet engine. This setup is not exceptionally loud........so I don't think it would be a problem.

Showpao.......I picked up piping at Pep Boys.

Probably because in Cali, people are more wary of discarding their muffler........cause the laws are more strict, and more striclty enforced. But I'd be interested to know if this straight pipe setup exceeds Cali exhaust dB limits.

Flex Pipe for EVER!!

KingLou
03-10-2004, 04:36 AM
Hehe........hell yeah. I'm all about the cheap stuff. :P Plus......I don't really have anything to make bends with.........and even if i did, they'd be a standard bend, which reduces cross sectional area. At least with the flex pipe.......I can bend the pipe and not kill the cross sectional area.

i wanna hear it. Even if it is loud, you can just keep your stock mufffler for things like fix it tickets and smog tests

The King is always doing something different :D I love it. I am headed down at the end of the month will you still have it on? :D

Did u use that exhaust wrap that is kinda like plaster?

KingLou
03-10-2004, 05:45 AM
Gabe..........unless it falls off, yes, I'll still have it on.

Denzinz, yes.........I did use that exhaust tape that is like plaster. I dunno how good it is.........but I only used it where the flex pipe meets the joint from the stock muffler (I cut that off and attached it to my straight pipe, so I could use the stock compression fitting to put it all back on).

I don't think it matters much..........the clamps I used probably gave enough of a seal. I tightened the begeesus out of them.

Update.........I've got vids with sound. I'll post them soon..........when I get back to my house where I can upload to my website (probably tomorrow). Beware.....unless you have broadband..........these vids aren't for you. We're talking 5-13 megabyte files.

Ok........just out of curiosity..........if people like the sound.............would there be any interest in buying this kit? I figure I can make a complete bolt on system out of this. Obviously.........this is something most people can probably do themselves. However..........I know not everyone has the time or the desire to go purchase all the parts.....cut them.........put them together.......etc. If I were to make this a completely bolt on kit........would anyone be interested in buying? Price would include the price of parts (about $50) plus a very small labor charge. I'm not looking to rape anyone if they actually want me to put a kit together for them. What do you think would be a good price for setup like this? I want to get some feedback before a slap a price on this...........plus.......I want to see if anyone would even be interested in buying the kit. If not........so be it. Figured I'd ask.

nice sound would you mind taking another video clip of it from out outside revving it up a couple of times then revving it to redline?

TheRedBox
03-11-2004, 06:05 PM
YES!! Please make a video from the outside, driving normally then if you can put it in neutral or park or whatever then let it bang redline that'd be great. Another cheap mod for me!

Sure guys.......I can get an outside vid. Dunno about an outside vid while driving........I'd need someone else in a chase car. That may take some time. But the revving in park I can handle. I'll post soon.......hopefully.

KingLou

Alright........here's outside vid in park.

It can get a bit loud if you take it all the way up to redline. Otherwise, I think it sounds pretty low and mellow. But.....at any rate........the key to this setup is it's cheap and simple.

KingLou

Well, if anyone is truly interested in buying this system.........give me some time to perfect a hanger setup.......so it will be a truly bolt on system. This will definitely be the most inexpensive "anti-stock" exhaust option out there.

I think im going to take this idea a step further...i have been thinking of removing my exhaust manifold, turning it upside down, cutting a hole in the hood of my car, and straight piping that exhaust right out of the hood.

then ill tune the car so that it backfires and shatters everyones windows.

Hey i just did that mod!!

It's super sick. Nice tone, it's a bit loud. but it sounds nice. Butt dyno says it's a bit
faster. I had mine done @ a local muffler shop for $50 bucks.

I LOVE IT!!

Do you think it would be hard to put a "Y" in to make it dual??? I want a cheap dual exhaust setup. :) [/code]

King, can you possibly make it into MPG format for us Mac users. AVi and WMV just don't work.

Thanks,

That is unbelieveable!!! That sounds awesome!!!

Is it possible to get some video while you are driving (what I mean is, what does it sound like on the inside). If it is not too loud and if it does not take away from engine performace, this might be the way I go. I am not a gear head, but would you not loose some back preasure with this setup?
