Stylis suggested that i used Dupli-Color METALCAST paint, but i couldn't find it. I went to PepBoys and got Plastikote Sandable Primer and Plastikote Brake Caliper Paint.
Supplies: Plastikote Sandable Primer, Plastikote Brake Caliper Paint (900* High Heat Paint), Roll of Masking Tape, 9'x12' Plastic Drop Cloth, Roll of Paper Drop Cloth (for Masking off)
Drums: Removed wheel, cleaned drum, masked off from slit in drum with masking tape then masked off entire wheel well, (masking off takes the longest), put plastic drop cloth on ground to make sure no paint got on my driveway and wrapped around back end of car to stop the misting from getting on my car. applied 4-5 coats of primer waiting about 2 minutes in between coats (the primer drys quick). after 10 minutes of the final primer coat i started applying the main coat in 5 minute intervals for about 6-7 coats (this paint is made for the abuse from the brakes, but i just doubled up on it to make sure i wouldn't have to be applying more again later on). after the last coat i waited an hour before i removed all the masking off and put the wheels back on. dropped the car back down and prepped for the front.
Calipers: Removed wheels, cleaned calipers, masked off calipers (i didn't remove them because it was getting late and i wanted the sun to work with me on the drying), the calipers take a long time to mask off cause theres all these little cracks in it and black rubber ?bushings?, anyways after getting it all masked off i did the same as with the drums. the plastic drop cloth works good to wrap under and over the front of the car to protect the body from the paint the cut a hole for the disc and tuck it behind the disc and that'll save you some time on the masking. i only really had masking tape on the caliper to mask it off, the plastic covered the rest. after everything was done i let the car sit for another hour and then drove it around to let the paint bond from the heat (or so it says on the can).
i had really bad luck with painting things before (i.e. my engine cover (thats why i had a wanted ad for one :D ) just never really took the time to prep and apply the coats in a certain way... i used to just spray the ____ till it was colored or get in a hurry and screw up on it... just the prepping part makes it work and the right kind of paint. the paint that stylis suggested are offered in annodized looking colors (DupliColor METALCAST) and withstand heat up to 500* i think, if you can find it it'll get you that metal look if you want that, this paint that i used was made for brake calipers and drums so i guess it's probably better that it is. if i would've found some of that metalcast i would've used it.

yeah..i'm thinking of buying the G2 Brake Caliper System...it's alot cleaner to work with cuz u just have to brush it on...no need to mask off everything...and u don't need to pull off ur brake caliper either. Only thing recommended is taking ur rims off...
The bad part is it says there's enough paint for 4 calipers or 2 drums. So we'll probably need two kits...?... Anyone on scionlife actually tried this kit?

k guys... i went ahead and did it.
I went to Super Autobacs and bought myself Dupli-color Caliper Paint Kit...
this kit is similar to the G2 kit..but alot cheaper and equal quality. It comes with
everything u need...Grease Cleaner Spray, Ceramic Paint, Brush, Stir Stick, and even masking tape.
here's the pic... i didn't get to paint the rear drums...cuz i got tired. But i was able to complete the front 2 calipers in about 2 hours. The paint dries pretty quick..but it took about 3 coats to make it solid. I have about 3/4 can of paint still left...and plan on painting more coats just to make it smoother.

u don't need painting skill...it's very elementary with the Dupli-Color Kit. I was surprised how easy it was.
I didn't have to mask off that much either... it's not like Spray paint, it's just simple brushing. Although the Kit comes with an inch wide brush...i recommend getting another fine brush for those hard to reach areas, it should cost no more than a dollar.
The whole kit cost me only $18. The labor wasn't too bad...just required taking the wheels off and painting. each coat of paint took about 15 min to dry... i used 2 jack stand to raise my frontend...so i could work on both side at the same time.
end result is priceless...

i'm not sure if it will be enough for the drums.. the kit is good for 4 calipers... but it depends on how many coats u apply. I've applied 3 coats on each calipers (2)..and have about 3/4 or so of paint left. But i'm not sure if that's enough to paint 2 drums...it will be enough to paint one drum for sure with 3 coats.
good luck...

Well..i'm running Goldline springs myself... although it's not a perfect match, i like the yellow caliper paint...it's not pale..rather it's almost gold-like yellow. it makes the Goldline springs look pale than the caliper.

Well, I finally got my red paint kit, and went to my Dad's today to try to paint the calipers.
Guess it was good to find out now rather than later... my jack no longer works on my car due to the body kit.
Dad had a hydraulic jack, but only one jack stand, and the jack doesn't fit under the car because it is so low to the ground.
I was thinking that maybe I could drive the front end up on some of those little mini-ramp things, and then slide the jack under the car... Just need to buy the ramps and a couple of short jack stands.

Pull one side at a time up onto them,or if you have enough 2x4's,drive up on both sides.
Should be able to get you in the air high enough!

i have the same problem since i put my kit on so i gotta use the factory jack and mini stands... i painted my calipers at home w/ high temp caliper paint... i'd suggest havin a bottle of paint thinner around to wipe down the over spray on the rotors... i masked them off the best i could but still got overspray...

06-23-2004, 03:05 AM
The 2x4 idea wouldn't work for me because my wheels are 7 inches wide. It would be dangerous for someone to get down and hold them in place while I drove up onto them. Plus, if I didn't drive up onto them perfectly centered, it could fall while I was trying to position the jack.
They have those mini ramps (Rhino Ramps) at Pep Boys on sale for $17.98. I am going to need something like that in the car if I get a flat tire, so I am going to buy them plus a bottle jack (which should work with my body kit), and 2 mini jack stands. I will just have to find room for them in my car, unless I want to get towed if I ever get a flat.
I bought the kit that uses a paint brush, so I don't have to mask anything. :D

You should allow the caliper to dry for about 6 hours in the sun/heatlamp. That way the paint settles anhd you can drive with them, if you don't wait that long. The paint could be soft still and every little road debris will get stuck in the caliper.

for the rear drums why wouldn't you just pull the drum off and spray paint it? wouldn't that be easier than brushing them? it'll take just 5 minutes to paint the drums. i can see brushing the calipers on the front, but not on the back.

sci-fire,
I used 2x8s to make ramps to get my xB high enuff for a jack. I cut 2 @ 3 feet long, and 2 @ 2 feet long. I also angle one side on each and then screwed the short one on top of the long one. Instant short height ramps.

How often do someone need to use the spray type wheel cleaners? Are there alternatives that are more "paint-friendly"? Also, I don't think i'd be too difficult to do touch-ups on the caliper by re-painting them, right?

I haven't found one yet, but I am looking. I've tried a couple different ones, and they all do the same thing. At this point, I'll have to repaint. They are discolored badly. I'm gonna try the High heat engine paint 1200 degrees from Duplicolor on my xB. Hope it works better.
I have to use the cleaner everytime I wash, because I don't like brake dust. If anyone has a brand that they've tried and didn't have any problems, please let me know.

the problem with the "High Heat Engine" as well as the Mirage paint is that both are spray on, as opposed to brush on, though right?

I bought some wheel wipes, like the window cleaner sheets but for rims. I forget the brand but they carry them at walmart and target, etc. That may do the trick without overspray, but then my wheels are probably the world's easiest to clean so...
Is the duplicolor system identical to the G2 system? I used the G2 setup on my 240's z32 brake setup, and it hasn't discolored at all. Holds up to brake cleaner, brake fluid, etc. The G2 system has a hardener in it, which, imo, makes it much more durable than the standard high-temp paint used by most. IMO, the added cost is well worth it.
Here's a pic. Please forgive the non-Toyota/Scion markings.
It seems pretty muc hthe same and it has ceramic additive in the paint to harden and fight the heat.
