Default My xb is in the shop. The key will not come out

I bought the car last month and love it!
But here is my problem, the key is stuck in the iginition. I took it to the dealer yesterday and they thought it was an iginition cylinder problem. I just called them and they said that it was a cable problem.

The car does not register that it is in park so I can't take the key out. They ordered the part and it won't be in till Tuesday. So here I am w/o a car.

Is this just a random, me problem, or has this happened to others? I tried to do a serach and came up empty.

I'd love to know if this has happened to other people. I knew I should have gotten a stick!

thanks

Since this is warranty work, and they will have your xB "overnight" or more, the dealership should provide you with a free-to-you 'loaner' for the duration, if you need it. That is a part of the Scion warranty...

Interesting problem, and not one I'd heard of before in Scions. There have been a few 'stuck keys' mentioned here at ScionLife, but you may have a first there with HOW yours is stuck.

What is the Scion service warranty say about loaner vehicles? What does it take to get a loaner?

Happened to me!

I thought it was a cylinder problem but the dealership never did specifically tell me what was wrong with our brand new xB that had only 55 miles on it.

The best answer to that should come directly from Scion - it's in your warranty booklet...

If you can't find it in there, I suspect if you called Scion at (866) 707-2466 they would be able to give you a definitive answer right off the tops of their heads.

Even your dealer SHOULD be able to answer that question easily...

Or I suppose you could read this, an excerpt from the Scion Warranty booklet:

If for some reason your ride doesn’t go, and your Scion must be kept overnight for warranty-covered repairs, you are eligible for transportation assistance from Scion. The Transportation Assistance Policy applies if your car must be kept overnight for any of the following reasons:
› The warranty repairs take more than one day to complete.
› The warrantable condition requires extensive diagnosis.
› The parts needed for the warranty repairs are not readily available and your car is inoperative or unsafe to drive.
The policy does not apply when the warranty repairs can be completed in one day but the car must be kept overnight due to dealer or owner scheduling conflicts.
The Transportation Assistance Policy applies for the duration of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty to all 2004 (2005) model-year Scions sold and serviced by Authorized Servicing Dealerships* in the mainland United States and Alaska. If you need more info, please contact your Authorized Servicing Dealership.

*For the purposes of this policy, an Authorized Servicing Dealership is a Scion dealership or a Toyota dealership.

Don't have a Scion yet, should have mentioned that.

So "transportation assistance" could mean a ride to work from the dealer? It doesn't exactly say loaner vehicle. Is there any more info that is a bit more exact?

Everyone I've ever asked, including my dealer, say that's a loaner (or rental car if no loaner is available). Most dealers will drive you to work or back home, or whatever as a part of normal service, but wqarranty service that requires an 'overnight' should require them to provide substitute transportation if you need it.

The only time mine was in for an 'overnighter' I got a 2004 Corolla loaner donated by the sales folks at the dealership, because all the service loaners were already on loan.

Still, the clearest answer would be from Scion itself...

Oh! Here's the warranty booklet (.pdf):

I remember having the "key stuck in the ignition" problem on a previous car that I owned... on that car there was a little plastic insert right near the gear shift lever, that could be popped out and there was a "release" in there that could be pushed so that the gear shift would fully engage in "PARK", and then I could take the key out.

It only happened to me once, and the owner's manual showed how to pop out the insert and "release" the stuck linkage.

I notice that there seems to be a little "pop-out" with a tiny horizontal slot near the gear shift lever on the xB, (auto tranny), however I don't know if that accomplishes the same thing. I haven't received my owner's manual yet to check and see if that problem is listed in it.

Thanks for the replys. Sucks that it happened to someone else, but I'm glad it just wasn't me.

I'm hoping to get a loaner tomorrow. They said on Saturday, when I called that the rental place was closed. I hate being without a car. Me and my boys walked yesterday, and I don't really like driving my hubby's car. It's too big.

and ya know what sucks even more? I'm getting my rims delivered this week! I don't want them to just sit here. I want to show them off!

I'll let you know what the final verdict is on what's wrong and how they fixed it.

exact same thing happened to me last week. xb was only a month old, 1600 miles on it. they gave me a loaner camry to drive around for a few days to wait on the ignition cylinder to come in. i had just installed an auxillary power port, (extra cig lighter) into my boomerang armrest and they said that might have been related. they fixed my wires and included it into the warranty work. car works great so far..

Mine started sticking in today. I found out that if you turn the car back on, shift into drive for about a foot, and put it back into park you can get the key out. I'll be going down to the scion dealer tomorrow to have this fixed, though.

Hubby installed the armrest about 2 weeks before the key got stuck. The service department did mention the armrest but they concluded that it had nothing to do with the problem.

My xb only had 843 miles on it. They need 2 parts for it, they have one part and were told the eta on an additional part would be one week. I just called and spoke with the service department and they said that the part may have come in today. They have to double check, open up the box and see if it's the one. What they don't know what part they need?

So here I am driving a rental. I have my tires in the spare room and my rims are on their way, should be delivered tomorrow.

I want my XB back!

funny, 2 months ago, I dropped my key and made a tiny dent on the tip( I did not notice it at first), then I notice the key is harder to take off from the ignition. then I made an inspection then find out that is causing it.
I grind the dent with a file, now its good again.
