Default How accurate is the xB fuel gauge?

i filled up my box and reset my trip meter. after half a tank my trip meter reads 191 miles. i have a stick, cai, headers,17 wheels, and i drive 70 - 80 miles per hour. let's say that the xB has a 10 gallons fuel tank, 191 miles/5 gallons (half tank) means my gas mileage avg is 38.2? it seems too good to be true. check my math lol...[/b]

The xB has an 11.9 gallon fuel tank. The light will come on with about two gallons left. To determine your gas mileage, a more accurate method would be to set your trip odometer at every fillup and divide your miles by the number of gallons to fill up the tank. This method will vary slightly since not all pumps will fill your tank the same amount. An even more accurate method would be a longer-term version which would require you noting mileage and number of gallons used over several fillups, then dividing miles by gallons.

You won't get an accurate mpg calculation from the gauge. Like every other gas gauge I've ever seen, my xB's seems to fall faster after the 1/2 mark.

However, if you must know now, just fill up the tank now. That will also tell you what "1/2" means in terms of gallons.

Otherwise, start with a full tank, wait til you fill up again, make sure you fill up the same way you did before, and divide the miles by the gallons.

Actually gas gauges are engineered to work that way on purpose, to create a sense of urgency to refill before running out. Plus there are some other factors that lead inaccuracies(i.e shape of tank, location of sending unit etc.)

doing what MAX said will get you a better picture of your actual gas mileage.

I believe the two points of accuracy are full and empty - all other indications are simply relative guesses.

As to the 'fuel' light, it should first come on between 2 and 2.5 gallons left. (2.5 gallons left should be right around 2 usable gallons left...)

My fuel light comes on at 2.4...

Only once have I had a fuel gauge that seemed to indicate half a tank at half a tank, and that was a Volvo 142E with a special factory 'Rally Dash' designed specifically for rallying, with some serious gauges.

My experience with the xb is that the gauge is pretty much dead on. I have filled up the tank with 1/4 left and both times it has put in right about 8.5 gallons. Since 75% of 12 (11.9) is 9 (meaning I had approximately 3 gallons left in the tank) I do not expect a gague to get much close than that. My trans am will get approximately 260 miles to a tank and my gague will still read at 1/2 at 200 miles....I think i can actually watch the needle move when I press the gas at over 200 miles on a tank So I am pleased with the way the one on the xb works.

It's very accurate...when it registers full it's full when it registers empty it's empty (let's not get to empty people). Anything in between is somewhere between full and empty.

Simple and yet excellent logic - hehe. Maybe this is more of an engineering question, but couldn't the manufacterer have put in a gas tank with a bigger capacity than 11.9 Gal ?, geez, round up please. I wonder if there is an after market company out there that sells tanks with a few mor gallons of capacity? Don't get me wrong, I think the xB is awesome hands down, I have a ton of cosmetic mods to install when the borg deliver my box. Just curious, thanks.

Even at "Full" it is only two thirds.
Oh Wait! I'm comparing it to the ole wagon out in the driveway.
I could count on a reliable 500 miles per tank on that baby.

Doesn't my 16 year old look cool in that car. 233,000 miles - some rust, some dents and scratches. Beat up old wheel covers (unless we put the beat up old alloys on it. the ones we took off the Sable sedan his big brother drove)
Ah, but they have it good. Their sister had to drive an AMC Eagle wagon. I miss that car.

Poor kids - but it builds character

this is how i calculate my mileage. i figured it was pretty dead on as you measure how far you have driven and how much gas you have used..

I'm sure that if there were enough demand SOMEONE would come out with a slightly larger tank for the xB.

Back when I had Land Cruisers I had one of them set up with three tanks with a total of 57 gallons capacity - got the aftermarket tankage from some outfit in Idaho, IIRC. Of course a good day on the highway saw maybe 12 MPG, and off-road that could easily drop to 6MPG when the going got really rough...

15 gallons would be a nice amount in an xB...

Back to the accuracy of the fuel gauge. I get nearly 100 miles an any given tank before the gauge begins to moveoff full. Then it rapidly falls. As an earlier poster said - you can almost watch it fall.
The station attendents think I have a screw loose. Very few customers buy purchase $13.69 or $21.98 at a time. "you couldn't put that last two cents in?" -- No, but I could have pumped it on the ground

They do make one aftermarket tank that might work. It comes color-matched for Camo and Salsa Red, the rest will have to paint to match.

So far I haven't been ablle to break 25mpg overall...This is with mixed city and highway driving, with a nice amount of stop and go traffic. Just filled up today 9.7 gals(low fuel light was on for about 10 miles), did 245.7 miles= 25.3 mpg average...This is w/ 17's and 215/45's (bigger OD than stock)

Here goes a nice one to add to your OEM if you're road tripping it... sweet!

Shoof, that means that you are actually going farther than indicated by your odometer at each fill-up, and that your milage is actually higher than your figures show...

To start with, many are finding that the xB odo is LOW by 2-4 percent with stock tires, of you add another few percent by having larger OD tires installed, it can seriously affect what mileage you think you are getting...

The only way I know to get close to actual is to measure a few times over marked distances (several milage markers, for example) and compare it to the odometer (use a trip odo 'cause it has tenths). Make corrections to your calculations after that to see what you are REALLY getting.

That is the problem. Scion/Toyota never changed the calabration when they went to 185/60R15 tires instead of the japanese 185/65R15 tires. So Scion/Toyota already did something that changes the way it reads from the factory, I guess for cost of tire size or something?
