WAR : Turbo v. Supercharger v. Nitrous v. N/A
Well everyone I decide to start this battle on the thought that good information would come out of it.
Turbo:
Turbo Kits Available/Under Production
- ZPI
- ScionSpeed
- Dezod
- Turbonetics and Greddy are rumored to go into production
Turbo kits start at about $3000 and at 6psi can produce about 240hp & 250tq.
Pros: Easily upgraded. Can produce large amounts of power. Easily increase power by raising boost levels. Can be very reliable with proper tunning.
Cons: High maintenance, heat, harder to install than S/C. Turbo lag. TRACTION.
Supercharger
Kit currently under production:
- TRD
Supercharger is estimated to cost $3200 and produce 200+hp & 200+tq
Pros: Toyota/Scion manufacture warranty. Reliable. Produces instant power. Less maintenance than T/C.
Cons: Harder to upgrade(must purchase new pulley & belt). Higher cost than turbo. Would probably void warranty if upgraded. TRACTION
Nitrous
There are no TC specific kits available, but universal kits available are:
- NOS, NX, Zex, Venom, Eddlebrock, Nitrous Works, ect...
Kits cost about $500 and can produce an extra 35+hp depending on shot used.
Pros: Least expensive way to produce power. Contrary to popular belief it's very safe when properly installed, (no it's not flamable and won't blow up like in F&F)
Cons: Power not always available. Must refill bottle. There is no room for error.
N/A
Bolt-ons available:
- Intake : Injen, K&N, AEM, ect...
- Exhaust : Injen, Blitz, HKS, ect...
- Header : Alphawerks, DC Sport, ect...
- Pulley : NST, Unorthodox, ect...
Major upgrades:
- Head : ZPI Stage 1
Sadly there are no major upgrades available at the moment (cams, valves, rods, pistons, ect...) and everything has to be custom made. The TC has a wonderful engine and has the possibilty produce big numbers.
Pros: Instant power, reliability, able to do little by little.
Cons: Very expensive, does not produce numbers as big as T/C or S/C
My Thoughts
I would love to build an N/A TC but due to lack of support it's more expensive usual. In the future I will be going turbo.

ok. a supercharger forces air right into the manifold. a cold air intake sucks in air and directs it into the manifold. if you have a supercharger, it's connected right into the engine. one, theres no need for an intake since the supercharger is already blowing air in. and two. there no way to connect an intake if the supercharger is there.

The S/C's airbox seems to sit right on top of the OEM airbox's posistion so it might be possible to get one of those cold air boxes onto it. If you wanted to be fancy I'm sure you can replace that whole tube and get a custom one to extend to the wheel well where a CAI would sit. I personally think the S/C with Umnitza's CAB (this is amusing to me) would be the best bet as it keeps the pipe as short as possible and has the advantage of a cone filter as opposed to the regular filter sheet.
I don't know if that's possible but to me it looks possible. I wouldn't know of any gains from any of the above but it's certainly a plausibility.

the supercharger won't produce instant power, it's cetrifugal, so it's gotta spin up to create maximum boost. N/A won't be instant power either, the whole powerband will end up moving upward..think 7k+. Turbo is the way to go..lag can be virtually eliminated with a proper sized turbo and piping and traction can be taken care of with a drag radial or stickier performance tire. I don't know where maintenance came from, and I don't know how u're talking about heat, whether underhood or needing an intercooler, but heatshields aren't hard to make, and are probably already available, and the install shouldn't be too bad, hardest thing would be tapping the pan for the oil feed line(assuming one would have to do that). and I'm not sure you'd want to run pullies with the supercharger..

I would say turbo for what is out. I would however like to see a good roots or screw type SC come out for comparison though. The linear action of these designs would be great... but there are none....

If not, i need to install the OEM Air Box? but why? The Weapon R Intake does the same work of the OEM Air Box, only with better air flow, right?

2. N/A same thing. You're not going to have 200hp as soon as you step on it but some power is there.
3. I 100% agree with you on turbo lag. With proper tunning it can be virtually eliminated. (I had it written on my original post but the site stalled when I turned it in everything got erased
4. Traction is going to be a problem no matter what. It can be helped but it's a FWD cars biggest enemy.
5. A turbo runs hot and although you can find ways to cool it theres no denying it's hot. This is were the extra maintenance comes from. You'll need a turbo timer and you should change your oil more often.
6. I'm not complaining that a turbo is hard to install, it's just harder to install.
7. The S/C runs on a pulley. If you want more boost you have to change it.

a positive displacement blower would be pretty nice, especially a twin-screw, a linear torque curve would be beautiful, and more predictible, as opposed to hitting boost and blowing the tires off all of a sudden. in reference to the pulley, I was talking about a aftermarket crank pullies or accessory pullies, not supercharger pullies.
