Do it for fun!
Do the math and you will see that you are at a disadvantage power-wise even with his extra tonage. You have about 1.5 extra LBS/hp than he does. Maybe those close gear ratios on your xB will help (not liekly).
If it is a 2004 model, his actual curb weight is 3, 448 lbs as well. The 3,590 lbs is for the T5 model with 247 hp... thats a no brainer there.
My bets on the Volvo. Torque/lbs beats you handily- 170 lb/feet = audios Scion (unless he misses a shift).
It'll be close though, so you might pull through.

Unless your talkin' pinkslips, go for it.
The beauty of the xB is the 108HP and $15,000 price tag. If you beat him, it shuts him up. If he beats you, you play it off as "It took 60 extra horses and how many extra $1000s to beat this little 4-banger box? "

My guess is.......he'd have to be an idiot driver to lose.
Sure.....it's a heavier car.......but those base 5cyl engines aren't a joke. And if you get a turbo.......move over grandma!
My mom has a 940 turbo. It's only a 4 cyl........but its roughly the same HP as the NA 5 cyl engine.
It will just blow away any stock xB out there......I'm sure of it. And probably any modded xB that isn't on forced induction or nitrous. But.......its probably not fair to compare a turbo 2.3L car to an NA 1.5L.
And let me tell you........the things that that 940 engine are capable of with some work.......good God.......you'd poo yourself. It's a 1994 model. If you're a Volvo enthusiast who likes the b230ft engine (ME)........THAT or the 95 is the year to have. Beefy rods.
With about $3000-4000 work in the right areas........you can be pushing 350 or more HP.
If my mom ever tries to sell that car........I'm gonna throw something big and heavy at her. That car is stayin in the family dammit...........so I can have an awesome project platform when I've got the money and time.

Why not. And don't do it for fun, do it because he needs to be punished, hate your opponent, maybe even through out some random comments about you wanting to eat his heart, and his children, word to allah...
If he's in an automatic I think you have a very good chance. If his car is running bad you have a great chance. If he cant drive well you have him. And if you do some course with a couple curves, you gonna spank him.

My bro-in-law wanted me to get a used V70 instead of the XB. He's a top mechanic at Volvo and a speed freak. Race for fun.
He told me that you can get the V70's to run about 300 HP all day with some fine tuning.
His car? An '89 volvo 740 Turbo Eurowagon with so many performance mods it's sick. 20 lbs boost (had it at 30 lbs but bent a rod) and about 260-280 HP to the wheels (butt-ometer not dynometer). Automatic. People always freak out when a 4 cyl. wagon dusts them.
sorry for the tangent

But, it's all in good fun... you should be able to annihilate that slushbox hefty.

Do the math and he has more lbs/ft relative to weight of the car than a scion as well, (delivering proportinally more toruqe at lower rpm, mind you). Also, measureing torque/weight does not necessarilly yield the same results as HP/weight, as one is a fundamental measurement of work- longitudinal movement, while the other is of twisting force. (That's why you always see hp/lbs considered so closely in racing....)
If that v70 is auto like you said Scion RI, I think you may just beat him.

why not have the best of both worlds?! race other slow cars! if its close then it may as well be going fast.... plus, you get all the bonus style with the car too
but u gotta race ugly pos'-those cars are just slow- your better off staying in 2nd gear around 20mph all the time... cruisin with the hottest lookin car on the streets than beatin the isht out of it and gettin to say you beat your friends moms mini-van :?
its all good though- do you and have fun, thats what its all about.
