Has everyone else really waited 5000 miles between oil changes? That seems like a really long time to me. I guess I am from the 3K or 3 month generation.

What does everyone else think??

I went the last two intervals at 5k. I am using Amsoil and the oil is a little dirty bu not really that bad. After all, isn't that part of an oils job, to capture contaminents so they can be flushed? Besides, you want to see DIRTY oil. Buy a diesel!

i had an '02vr6 aand went at 10k at a time before oil change.... it's went 80k withouth major service. hehehehe but it runs like a champ.

i also had a '90 toyota pick up... same case 10k oil change, it went 280k no major service, just change the spark plugs & brakes. it was still running good until my ex wife took it away.

ex-wife baddddd... for cars. stay away!

Most (quick lube places) tell you to change the oil at 3000 miles so they can rip you off and make more$$$. Check it around 3000 and make sure it does not smell burned ,or is black.Top it off if needed and wait till 5000 for a full change.

Cars and oil are just simply better these days. If Toyota says 5K I'm doin' 5K. Anything else is wasting time, money, and petroleum IMHO.

I'm torn on this one. Took my xB in at 4400 for the first FREE one. The tech put the clear, clingon sticker in the window telling me to return at 7400. Someone forgot to tell him the manufacturers recommended interval.
I changed it again at 9400. Put in Castrol Syntec Blend (I told you I was torn). Ran it 2500 and changed the filter and added.
I intend to take it back for the second FREE change this weekend at pretty darn close to 15,000. I pretty much decided to have them do the recommended services at 15,000. I have to look that up though before I committ.
After that I'll likely do the Castrol Syntec Blend thing again (I told you I was torn). Then back for the third FREE.
I'm still debating with myself on what oil to settle on for the duration though. And if I really NEED to do the filter change in the middle.

I like the 5000 mile plan. But with that long a span between changes, I want the long type of oil filter, not the short stubby one that the dealers sell for big bucks.

Does anyone know the number and manufacturer of a long replacement filter?

I get mine changed every 3k. Actually, I try to get all my maintainance done a little early if not on schedule.

Most if not all cars have several different maintainance schedules for different driving types.

I always follow the schedule for more 'extreme' use of the car... i.e. frequent short trips, time spent in traffic, frequent acceleration from a stop.

If you're living outside a city, the 5k schedule should do you fine, but if you're a daily driver who gets stuck in traffic a lot, I'd get it changed every 3.

But that's my opinion. If you prefer the 5k go with the 5k.

Today's oil can totally hold up to 5000 mile oil changes, I
think it's the filter we need to worry about. I'm using Mobile 1
K&N, or true Japanese (Denso) Toyota filters. My oil changed
every 5K comes out amber with some dark deposits in it.

I'm still looking for the filter that will let it come out pure amber.
I'll tell you all if I find it.

Yeah i think toyota recommends oil changes at 5K or every 6 months. For me the 6 months happens first he he. Last oil change for me was at 3K and some change. Now i have 6K and some change and it's been 6 months....and i am passed the 5K Service check up..so that's all getting done today YAY!

Hey for your filter Raven have you thought about a WIX? I have heard good things about them but I cant attest to how good they are......

I change my oil every 2.5 k.... That way I keep in track with the 15K,30K,45K ect intervals

I know its a compleate waste if money, but I got lots to burn!

Im joking, I am just overly anal with my xB, so the more changes the better!

If the oil looks dirty change it :silly:

I'm the kind of freak who actually takes oil from the dipstick and rubs it between his fingers to see if it's gritty.

I have yet to go more than 3k between oil changes.

BtW, anyone know what kind of oil the tC uses? Is it Synthetic or natural petrol? I'm sure I could find out in the owners manual, but I'm too lazy to use the search function or walk to my car.

thats not a long time

BMW's first oil service, Oil filter, cabin filter

is at 15,000

but then again its 530 synthetic. oil come out black but smooth

I will run my car 10,000 between oil cnages and run a new filter every 5000 on synthetic castrol 5-30

im very comfortable with this and i just put on my flame suit on :nails:

Do you have the price memorized as well?

Also - how important is it to use a 'high dollar' filter if one is going to change filters and top off after say 2500-3000 miles?

My first 3 oil changes are free from the dealer. I ended up taking my car in at a litte over 3000

My dealer has that program too; I didn't ask them what kind of tires they use. My guess would be the same as OEM. And considering the expanded maintenance schedule that the dealer uses (to bring in more money, obviously), I don't think this works out to my advantage price-wise. I'm better off doing as much of the maintenance myself as possible, then just buying a new set of tires (any kind I want for that matter) when the stock ones are worn.

As for the 5k interval -- that's Scion's recommendation. My dealer recommends a 3k interval due to "harsher driving conditions" (this is Vermont -- the only time conditions are harsher is January and February, when the temp spends a lot of time below zero or in the single digits).

I'll probably maintain a 5k interval -- but I'll use synthetic oil once my tC's got a few thousand miles on the clock.

My dealer also put a clingon sticker suggesting 3 months or 3k miles. I did that for the first three changes, but now its 4k for me with Mobil 1 5/30 and YO filters.

xBHAWK: I can get you the long YO part # tonight. I have one awaiting the next oil change at home.
