View Full Version : Catback vs. Axleback
Nozerider 08-13-2005, 04:54 AM What do you guys think? I found a borla catback for $125 locally. I'm wondering if I should do that instead of a more expensive axleback system route. Take note that I'll have to have it installed, I'm moving so my tools= gone. I wonder how much it would be to have a catback installed, since I hear you have to cut the pipe off.
Anywas, opinions welcome.
i don't think the install shouldn't cost that much cut it off and weld on the cat back system
i just wish they made an cat back system for the xA
Nozerider 08-13-2005, 02:58 PM So you think catback over the axleback?
chucksu 08-13-2005, 03:16 PM So you think catback over the axleback?
Midas charged me something like $48 to install a custom bolt on exhaust system. They had to cut the old one off, so I would guess your cost would be around that price to. If its a true cat back, I would jump on it for that price. Just make sure the parts are still in good shape.
Nozerider 08-13-2005, 03:24 PM Thanks, I guess I'll get it then.
Nozerider 08-14-2005, 05:35 PM Damn, it was sold when I called the guy back. Oh well. In terms of axlebacks, what does everyone think of Strup?
dante_b 08-14-2005, 05:40 PM i was told that for these engines an axleback is the way to go. a catback wont relatively do anything, unless you have a super charger or a turbo setup. From the two an axleback is the easier route to go. Why do you think that no one has made a full catback for these engines? I would go with JiC or RSR, or maybe even a Kenstyle from bulletproofautomotive.
Grimstar 08-14-2005, 07:16 PM A catback is better if you don't go over 2 1/4 in pipe size, I went with 2 inch and I feel the difference. I haven't dynoed it but pulling against another xb with same mod but mine cat and other axle felt a lot different. Shout out thanx Rich for the testing!

Good job on the 2" exhaust. I did a right up when I first joined, that talked about the different flow abilities of the different sizes. It would be best to run 2" until you get up into the 125hp+ range, where the 2.25" would help out more with the top end.
Nozerider 08-14-2005, 08:13 PM Well, now that I won't be getting that catback deal, I'm going to stick with the axleback. Anyone have some opinions on Strup?
chucksu 08-14-2005, 08:18 PM Seems like a good set up. Not sure if I would really fork out $400 on 4hp though. I my self will be getting a exhaust from gabe (stylis). They are like $280 or so shipped
Grimstar 08-14-2005, 09:18 PM I bought a Megan racing muffler and just had the guys weld 2" piping cat back, it only cost me like $120 altogether.

I don't know where you got that number. The Strup is $285. Plus the sponsor guy is busting out 5% off for Scionlife members.

Minttoast 08-15-2005, 05:29 PM i just put a strup axle back on my xb and it was the best thing ive done to my car so far. just the way it looks is worth the money but sound is fantastic and performance is like 4hp so its not all that big of a deal.
def. recommended
Nozerider 08-15-2005, 07:58 PM Stylis, to be honest, my exhaust choice is between your axleback or the Strup. I'm getting as many unbiased opinions as I can to accurately gauge which I should buy.
BTW do you have a clip yet of someone revving with your auto axleback? It's hard to hear it in that clip of it idling.
theomen21 08-15-2005, 08:40 PM getting a magnaflow cat back system installed today, I'll post a review when I get back.
theomen21 08-15-2005, 11:01 PM got the catback, and damn is it nice. Very nice tone, and loud. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like exhaust noise though, as it's pretty audible in the cabin.

Shipped, his is $285, yours $300. 15 bucks doesn't really matter to me, so I'm trying to judge on member opinions.

Nozerider 08-16-2005, 02:06 AM Too bad I don't have a manual.
Nozerider 08-16-2005, 02:22 AM That kenstyle= hot looking.
MussBus 08-16-2005, 10:12 PM What do you think is necissarily the best exhaust/ header combo for an automatic xb... would you go with catback with 2" pipe? What brand? Or would you go with axle-Back and what brand!~ Then which header do you put on? Sorry but I am saving up for this and dont want to screw up and end up buying two or even three different exhausts~
squirrel 08-16-2005, 11:24 PM got the catback, and damn is it nice. Very nice tone, and loud. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like exhaust noise though, as it's pretty audible in the cabin.
I have a complete custom Magnaflow catback center exit exhaust on my xB and its not as loud as some may think. Some shops go the cheap route and replace the resonator w/ a 14 inch glass pack. I did not.
I revamped a previously installed Magnaflow round canister muffler based catback that resonated so bad, you couldn't hear yourself think, let alone have a conversation while driving. You could hear the xB coming before you saw it.
It was because of the 14 inch glasspack, that, coupled w/ the round canister muffler, resonated throughout the cabin at freeway speeds.
I had the glasspack replaced w/ a true Magnaflow resonator and a street series oval muffler replaced the round canister muffler.
The owner/driver thanked me since he could now talk and carry on w/ a conversation w/o having to shout, klet alone blast his stereo to kill some of the droning.
chucksu 08-16-2005, 11:50 PM Too bad I don't have a manual.
The only diff between the 2 is the muffler used. That way the auto system sounds a little more quite. It still bolts up the exact same way.

I don't blame you for finding out everything you can, I got your PM and hope my explanation helped you out. :D
I don't have a clip of the auto axle back revving, but I can assure you that the sound is very deep and mellow. And sits very high for better ground clearance.
squirrel 08-17-2005, 01:52 PM A buddy of mone took reading of several axlebacks. The quietest at the time was the Tanabe Hypermedallion, and one of the loudest, at the legal level here in CA, was the Magnaflow Race Series oval. All of the axlebacks were on xBs.
chucksuyour axle back is going to be shipped out today. Can't wait to see the pics. :D Oh yeah, finally saw an episode of closed case, it was cool.
