View Full Version : Lowering
Hossam1988 03-21-2004, 03:41 PM Hey, I think I'm going with 18" ( 215/35/18 ) rims. What do you think is better for lowering?
1) TRD 1" Drop
or
2) 2" Drop (You tell me whats the best brand)
scionracerxb 03-21-2004, 03:47 PM 2" GOLDLINE
its_ikon 03-21-2004, 03:48 PM spy or tein
Nathant888 03-22-2004, 12:15 AM It depends on where you are from. I live in Northwest Arkansas and there are hills, bumps, and potholes galore. I would say go with the TRD 1" drop, just to be safe. Many people have said the drop is 1.25 after u break them in. But the decision is yours.

xBSciontist 03-22-2004, 02:18 AM I got the same size wheels and got the Spy Engineering 2" drop springs. Box rides good and looks nicer. Need my bro to borrow his camera so I can post pic.
TheScionicMan 03-22-2004, 02:23 AM 2" on goldlines. Looks good, rides good, handles great.
PandaIst 03-22-2004, 02:32 AM spy, tein, tanabe, or rs-r.
Distracted_Thinker 03-22-2004, 09:48 PM When you lower it I know it rides better but what about the bumps does it ride stiffer (more bounce)?
randode 03-22-2004, 09:58 PM 2" spy or 2" gollines.
i've installed 27 sets of springs!
scionxb04 03-23-2004, 04:32 AM tein if u want a nicer ride....spy and goldline have higher spring rates which = harsher ride
im running 18x7.5 with 215/35/18
offset front 45mm offset rear 30mm
using tein s techs

scionspecialistvegas 03-23-2004, 06:53 PM I agree the spy's or goldline do give a preety smooth ride.

GoldLines are the best "bang for your buck"
Al-Truistic 03-23-2004, 07:43 PM OK.....ummmm
What's the diff, are the Spy's and Goldlines's lower rate than Tein, so that they "ride excellent?" Does that mean they ride more like a Towncar or even close? :?

not quite like a towncar, but not as bumpy as stock.
bBted 03-23-2004, 08:23 PM tanabe df-210 is the bomb...

This is what confuses me. From most opinions, Goldlines are supposed to be the smoothest ride (not stiff), so they must have the lowest spring rate right? But from the specs, Goldlines have pretty high spring rates. :?
spring rates = Front/Rear:
KGMM DR21 = 2.2-3.8/1.1-4.4
KGMM NP21 = 1.7-3/1-3.7
Goldline = 3.3/3.4 (front linear/rear progressive)
Tein S. Tech = 2.6/3.2
Tein H. Tech = 2.3/3.2
Tanabe DF210 = 2.8/3
Tanabe NF210 = 2.1/2.5
spy = ?
eibach = ?
(all are progressive except goldline)
By this info, Tanabes should be the smoothest (least stiff) :?
Maybe there are other factors besides spring rates that determine smoothness?
jackmott 03-24-2004, 12:37 AM since they are all progressive, a spring rate number alone is meaningless
the goldlines may have a softer or larger progressive range
or may be quoting the hardest part of their range while others are quoting the softness
who knows!
Ive got linear eibach race springs all around now and it feels fine =)
wussies ;)
OK.....ummmm

ahurdl01 03-24-2004, 12:42 AM the springs may be softer, but longer, so they give the same drop but better bump absorbtion. the stiffer ones, may be shorter, and stiffer ride. progressive springs are the best way to go, soft at first then stiffer at the end.
unlmtdndeavor 03-24-2004, 12:46 AM i say tanabe...but hey, thats wat i got and the only ones ive ridden in have tanabe, so who knows
ProjectFusion 03-24-2004, 03:20 AM What about the Eibach Pro-Kit? Anyone have any knowledge on those? I've got a good deal on a set but if not quality then not worth the deal.
XTRMGMR 03-24-2004, 03:24 AM I ran Eibach Pros for about a month then I changed to coilovers. The Eibachs are very good for performance if you use the stock struts and shocks but they were too stiff for my taste.

like i said teins ride nicer....and with that high of a spring rate goldines cant ride even close to as nice...only springs that woud ride smoother then teins are the tanabe NF210's....plus the teins arent a full 2inch drop which means more shock/strut travel/suspension travel....and with a spring rate that high on the goldlines upgrading the shocks/struts is a good idea
read this about spring rates... http://www.tuninglinx.com/html/a_spr_rate.html someone posted some wrong info about spring rates
Maybe there are other factors besides spring rates that determine smoothness?
You better believe it! The shock is more important than the spring for the ride. You can have a soft spring feel "stiffer" than a strong spring with the right shock valving.
One thing to keep in mind when looking at these specs, they do not necessaily say the same thing. The amount of "progressiveness" can make a big difference in how the springs ride. And not necessarily to the good.
One of these days, we should have a blind ride test of all these springs with the stock shocks. I don't believe you can rightly determine the "best" setup from the specs alone.
Al-Truistic 03-24-2004, 02:37 PM I think this is a great idea!
Any kind of rating would be helpful. Three judges and the driver in an xB with the stock shocks and various installed springs.
We'd actually need to get a "course" to drive... :)
Seems like it wouldn't be hard to round up the rides. Would having sway bars or a tower brace affect this, what about wheel combo? :?
Anyway, would be nice...

We could do this pretty easily. Use a stock set of wheels/tires and shocks as the baseline. I doubt anyone wants to use their aftermarket wheels/tires as the "guinea pig". Drive the same couse at the same speed and evaluate. Of course, the evaluator (passenger) must not know what car he is in and with what spring. The course could be selected such that the sway bars and tower struts would not make a big difference. Hell, some guys out there may even have access to an accellerometer (I know I do) to measure the varying shock as well as "seat of the pants" rating. This may scientifically confirm the rating. It would be nice to see some blind comparisons.... :P

Interesting...
How would the installs be handled? There has always been drama around that... :?
How would we get access to all the springs and how long is the install for springs, could the tests be completed in one day?
What the hell is an accellerometer?

spring install takes 34-40 minutes with air tools.
You don't need a bunch of spring installs on one car.....You need a bunch of cars with difference springs with stock shocks. Then you just swap wheel/tires with the baseline wheel/tire to make each run equal. :D
What the hell is an accellerometer?
It's a device that measures vibration or shock.

he never replaced the shocks, so yes they were stock. he later installed the coil-overs.
k4kas 03-25-2004, 04:13 PM So all of those people are staying with their stock shocks?
Do they not have any problems bottoming the struts out in front?
I would like to go down 2" with 18" wheels but I am not going to if my stock
struts and shocks will only last 6 months as with all other cars I have lowered
with springs.
I have lowered many cars 1.5 with stock struts and they seemed to have lasted a long time on the stock struts and shocks.
Is the scions shocks made to be used with lowering springs more so than any other car?

they all have stock shocks and struts. some have shorter bumpstops, but most dont and i dont think they are needed. Ive NEVER bottomed out either of my xB's on 2" Spy springs.

Just remember to cutt your bump stops or install the ones that were provided in the spring kit and you will be fine. Thats the only thing you have to worry about bottoming out, that and huge pot hoiles!!

They look pretty progessive to me!! They HAVE to be progressive.
IF I get another box I'll sport the tanabes just so I can have two different sets and be the expert!

I've never seen them myself, but I e-mailed them. Linear in front and progressive in rear. Maybe he meant they were "progressively wound" which essentially acts as linear with "dead" coils. (caution: I know nothing about springs - just regurgitating stuff I read  )

I took my car to my friends shop to see if it needed an alignment the other day. It dosen't need one at all. Even after being lowered 2.2 inches in the front and 2.0 inches in the rear.

Best to at least get her checked!
