I've located it to the exhaust (I THINK) because I cupped my hands around the exhaust tip then smelled my hands and it smelled like the smell I smelled... (whoah!) ... but my car has a really bad smell... sort of like a burning rubber or burning oil.. more towards the burning rubber...

Is this normal? I mean, is this part of the break in period?

Its not there all the time.. it comes and goes and I can only smell it when parked....

Any ideas???

How many miles on your car? Usually new cars with 0 miles will have a burning rubber smell for the first few miles, I know my Geo did but I do not have my xB yet so I am not sure but that also most likely will.. Everything is new so it is soft of 'breaking' it in.

It's not uncommon with a brand new car to smell what appears to be either metal, paint, or plastic burning. Back in the day, they used to spray the undercarriage of vehicles (travelling by boat to the US) with cosmolene. The first few hundred miles or so one would constantly smell something burning underneath...it was the cosmolene.

I wouldn't worry about anything unless you see something leaking. BTW, congrats on your new Toy.

When I first started selling cars I smelled this when I got back from my first test drive and was freaking out cause I thought I broke the car (never really drove a brand new car before).

It's normal! it's just a coating they put in the pipes when it ships from the factory...it will go away after about 50 miles.

Rock on, way to go on the 1.0!

Hey it could be the new brakes breaking in maybe?

Had the same smell for the first few days w/ my xB. It is most likely the exhaust. It is normal and burns off quickly. If you get an aftermarker exhaust you will have a similar smell for the first day or two.

give your car about 500-1000 miles and if it still smells then go to see the dealer.

Are sure you didn't run over a plastic bag? That can happen too. 8)

If it smelled like rotten eggs a little it could be you are hitting the throttle a little too hard trying to keep up with that Porsche 911  . You know sometimes you pull behind someone that has been driving hard and you get an awful whif and then they drive away  . Not a problem as long as it happens when you drive hard or are carrying a full load of people. If it happens otherwise, possible fuel mixture issue for the dealer to fix  .

its gone now.. just like everyone said...

Maybe some people didnt notice it because they drove all of their miles really quickly... It was gone the next day after i finally got some miles on it..
