I figured I need new shocks for the door I want to use 1 Boston acoustic 10" sub its like 25 pounds and 7" deep and I'm gonna use a tunable radiator for the other side so it will look like 2 subs. I know i need some dynamat and put some dampening behind the plate.
I think you will end up with a huge rattle trap if you don't fiberglass a box in there. I have 2 12"s in a box in the rear and the rear hatch sounded like a bag of tins cans rattling around before I filled it with the pink stuff.
My father did that kind of setup in his Geo Tracker w/ two 10" subs.
After trying several things, he determined the best thing to do was to make a template of the stock plastic covering, and then cut a piece of MDF in the same shape. Painted the MDF is a texture paint and used the stock mounting holes.
He used lots of dynamat and insulation in the empty space, and then mounted the drivers to the MDF and covered the grills. Sealed it up all really well and it ended up baing a fairly airtight enclosure. Looked pretty nice when done.
Not the best setup if you're loking for a competition sound, but pretty good for daily use.

Here's cut and paste from my reply to this topic a while ago.
I have 2 suggestions.
1st.. the old illusion audio subs. And now the new one's have gone back to the shallow design. They used a tiny little neodymium magnet and they were thin. Their mounting depth on a 12" is 3.25" and 2.8" for a 10"

2nd. The alto mobile Falstaff subs. They 12" sub has a mounting depth of 3 inches.

Now you could mount these into the rear hatch. But I was thinking about this since you brought it up and to run the wires to it would prolly go through a hole drilled in the top of the hatch near the strut and run down inside next to the window. It would be tight if you did it. Keep me posted.
Heres another really slim sub:
Blaupunkt THw1200 with 2.6" mounting depth for a 12"

I guess those were the old ones heres the new one.

Also the pioneer TS-SW124D

Everyone thanks for the help. I took that panel off and got a little dicsouraged because of all the stuff back there but i might give it a try. Worse come to worse i'll put the panel back on and use a box.
With fiberglass you could make good use of those spare cubic inches within the hatch itself by just forming a nice front for the enclosure that moulds right up to the hatch, with a nice almost oem look.
This is something I really wanted to do but those blaupunkt odw1200 are way more than I can afford for audio in my dogmobile.
I'd love to see your finished product.
