View Full Version : Auto Shift Boot
CatalepsicFox 09-01-2005, 04:43 AM Anyone has a shift boot on an Automatic? I want to put a leather shift boot. But I don't know if I can remove the plastic piece that acts as the rails for the auto's rails. And if I remove it will it still move like I still have that plastic rail there?
bacho 09-01-2005, 05:33 AM why on earth would you want to do that?
chipmOnk 09-01-2005, 05:41 AM why on earth would you want to do that?
Because he wants to? :lalala: :lalala:
bacho 09-01-2005, 05:43 AM I guess so... I have never heard of someone doing that. Guess he gets points for being original.
Imthekingman 09-01-2005, 06:10 AM its been done
CatalepsicFox 09-02-2005, 04:39 AM Lots of people done this already. But I don't know whether the plastic peice stays or not? I really want a leather shift boot but that means the plastic rail peice must go since it's really thick.
The_Instigator 09-02-2005, 04:54 AM couldnt you just get the center console part form a manual tC and stick it on there?
CatalepsicFox 09-02-2005, 04:58 AM wouldn't that mean I need to convert my car to a manual which is $$$$ I still dont understand will my auto shifting still be the same (meaning shifting non linearly) if I remove the plastic piece?
The_Instigator 09-02-2005, 07:28 AM No. You can remove the center cosole portion that has the shift plate and cig lighter and replace it with the same part from a manual. It will make the car look like a manual, but will still function just like your auto always did. You just wont be able to see what gear youre in.
TCRS1_0 09-02-2005, 11:30 AM In autos they tell you what gear your in , in the dash board indicators P R D 3 2 1
The_Instigator 09-02-2005, 05:14 PM In autos they tell you what gear your in , in the dash board indicators P R D 3 2 1
well ok. There you go then.
purpled_out_tC 09-02-2005, 05:59 PM Pics????
The_Instigator 09-02-2005, 06:16 PM Of what..he hasnt done it yet. Either way, it would just look like a stock manual.
BubbaNoy 09-04-2005, 02:39 AM yeah, but he can say that his shifting is so smooth, it's like an auto...LOL..well it is an auto..but who else will know, unless they're driving
CatalepsicFox 09-11-2005, 01:17 AM Sorry guys I'm still a bit confused... I mean I want to remove the atual shift plate (i'm guessing that's what it's called). Will it still shift the same non linear way the auto is? I might do this soon and post pictures when I have the time.
The_Instigator 09-11-2005, 02:40 AM Take off the center section of the console and try it. Just remove the shifter knob and pull on the console from the edges. It comes right off.
zoltiz 09-11-2005, 02:52 AM There is a good chance you can fit a shift boot from a 5-speed over the "plate" that has the path for shifter to move through. The thin silver trim around this plate is exactly the same as in 5-speed, and the boot is not even glued to this silver trim, so if you have a buddy with a 5-speed tC you can try it before buying the boot.
vietTC07 09-11-2005, 06:29 PM LoL hes doing it cuz it looks like a manual*
haha jk good luck with it
05-RS1 09-11-2005, 07:04 PM the plastic rail will still be there. from what i know, ppl jus take the outer rim of the plastic rectangle off and place a boot over the shifter and jus put the outer rim back on to hold down the boot. thats how the ones i've seen were done
CraniumDesigns 09-12-2005, 09:37 PM i did this on my old 96 civic. it was an auto and i bought a boot for it that someone made on ebay. it looked nice. i wouldnt do it on the TC though. i like the stock interior.
CatalepsicFox 09-13-2005, 05:22 AM the plastic rail will still be there. from what i know, ppl jus take the outer rim of the plastic rectangle off and place a boot over the shifter and jus put the outer rim back on to hold down the boot. thats how the ones i've seen were done The problem with this is because the space required for a leather shift boot that I want to buy is 1.0mm thick. It's really high quality leather and some reason if I stuff the shift boot like so, I will probably hear some cracking noise and the shift boot ending up being loose bc I broke something.
ChicagosFinest 09-13-2005, 05:30 AM I just killed the amber.. (it isn't the most appealing color in my opinion).. I say try changing the light under the shift console, if you still don't like it. then go with a boot.. it's unique, but not my style... oh but you CAN get the railing off to put a boot on there.. trust me I disected the shift console two nights ago.. it all comes apart into 4 layers (or pieces)..

So after removing my railing I still be able to shift like normal (non linearly that weird non straight way?)? I think my car will be more harder to steal once it looks like an manual. (imagine the thief trying to shift it to first LOL).
ChicagosFinest 09-13-2005, 07:46 AM haha.. that's a good point.. you don't want to remove the thing that guides the shifter.. Trust me you don't want to.. I just remembered that it is on a rubber track (like a thin rubber strip) and it isn't pleasent to get that re-alined.. you could fit a shift boot between that silver piece and the center console ( if you remove the trim and sand down a little bit). it would be a pain in the neck but it would be possible...
I will look into it tomorrow sometime.. depending on when I wake up.. I've been up searching for my next mod and need to disassemble alot so that I can figgure out every thing. I'll PM you or post photo's of what you could do.
This as a quick warning to all: You do not want to dismantel the shifter console.. there must be an easier way! it is not difficult to do or to reassemble.. but you will loose a lot of time with it.

Yea keep my updated. Maybe you can have your own write up too have it posted on teh faq some day haha.
TheQuietThings 01-17-2006, 07:05 AM any updates???
ChicagosFinest 01-17-2006, 07:23 AM it's possible.. you'd either have to find a high shift boot or cut the pole.. I totaly forgot about this thread and I apologise.. I haven't had time to do any of my write up that I said I'd do.. or atleast try..
to do this you have to leave the guide thing in, because of the tracks underneath it.. Honestly, I don't think the idea is worth it.. I can post on how to make the shift console pretty, but I'm personally not fitting a boot arround the shifter..
TheQuietThings 01-17-2006, 07:56 AM so does this mean its possible for the boot to fit? or no?
i'm not looking for leather or anything, im just looking for a normal black boot that will look clean on the shifter.
the 240SX boot supposedly works out well?
if it does im buying it ASAP
CatalepsicFox 01-18-2006, 12:41 AM yes it's very possible I been so lazy to post a tutorial on installing the shift boot. Maybe I'll post something this weekend. One problem though even though if you have a aftermarket shift boot like mines you will still need to but the stock manual one bc you will need the inner trim to hold the base.
There is no real cutting or anything to damage your car if you want to do this bc it should just snap right in. The only thing you will need to do is remove that PRND32L plastic piece.
Check out my car domain page if you want to see what I have so far on the tutorial. Also someone PM me and remind me to finish the darn thing :P
stealthriot 01-18-2006, 05:54 AM i just saw your install...

looks really clean! flawless! i like it. i had mistaken it was a manual when i first went to your car domain page. what specific type is that leather shift boot from redlinegoods??? did u cut the handle to make it short..wow it looks like a short shifter was installed. Lol. and the gear emblem where'd u get that? loooks nice!
Brn2Pla 01-18-2006, 06:14 AM just keeping up with this....I'll do it when I get home and when I get the parts

so, i would just have to remove a plastic piece and a normal shift boot should fit right in?
stealthriot 01-18-2006, 06:24 AM heres CatalepsicFox url for the tutorial, which i believe is unfinished. picture illustrations would do the thing. we're all probably more visual than verbal.

thanks dude for taking time to write up a tutorial.

I didn't cut the handle of the shift knob, supposely with the speedstar shiftknob you can keep twist it down until around that height. the lil gear emblems also comes with the shiftknob. (OBX SpeedStar). Just wait for the weekend guys. =) I will have something of a real picture tutorial by then since i'm getting more request.
PS That tutorial currently was beta and I was winging it. It's not what I actually did so I recommend you guys wait a lil longer.
stealthriot 01-18-2006, 09:22 PM cool! thanks!
Eppopipe 01-18-2006, 09:52 PM waiting..
Scion_shift 01-18-2006, 09:57 PM why do you want to do this? so it looks like the manual you SHOULD have bought?
ChicagosFinest 01-18-2006, 09:58 PM that looks a lot better then i thought...
Eppopipe 01-18-2006, 09:59 PM not everybody can have a manual..
some people have either a auto or no car..
SciontCya 01-18-2006, 10:33 PM why do you want to do this? so it looks like the manual you SHOULD have bought?
Nice. if it's not for you, pipe-down. :loser:
Nice job man - I'm looking carefully at this for my auto - the car I should have and did buy.
Scott
AtC2nv 01-18-2006, 10:50 PM i love my auto...n really like how the boot and shiftknob looks...but for some reason...n no offense...this jus seems like a poser mod....dont get me wrong...its freakin bootyful and great too look at....but why would your want your auto too LOOK like a manual......when its not one....basically your making your car look like something its not.....but that shiftknob is freakin sweeeeet!!!!...me likes
Scion_shift 01-18-2006, 10:58 PM haha pipe down? the guy is a poser like stated above. not ONLY did the guy put a boot on, but a SHIFT PATTERN EMBLEM? who is he trying to kid? people at the mall so they dont think he has a auto and laugh at him? a freakin shift pattern logo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!         they dont even have the same shift pattern. and pipe down? others are giving their opinions so can i, just cause its a negative one so what. if you cant take the negative with the positive, then dont do crap like that
TheQuietThings 01-18-2006, 11:04 PM i want it, and i dont care what anyone else thinks.
I LIKE IT!
SciontCya 01-18-2006, 11:05 PM Opinions don't have to be presented like they came from a 12-year old...
I don't like the fake shift-pattern sticker either, but some of you act like little brats did in junior high school.
Give an opinion, but do it is a way that's not so effing stupid.
Eppopipe 01-18-2006, 11:58 PM i just dont like the way the knob sits on top of the skiny pole
just looks empty
i like the boot cuz it fills up space
CatalepsicFox 01-19-2006, 01:02 AM i know I will be criticized for this already as you can see some of the posts on top. But that's what happens. Like he said you got to take the negatives with the positives. I like the shift boot look since I can't have an auto bc of insurance reasons. Plus my commute is more than 80 miles a day in gridlock traffic. It's no fun driving a manual in traffic. I dont know anyone hasving a car for less than 5 months and has more than 9k miles on it.
Also if you ever look at a BMW Auto. IT COMES WITH A SHIFT BOOT! The only thing problem is that it doesn't come with the lil faking emblem. I'll admit to how "fake" my car can be but it looks nicer to me with a shift boot and the whole ordeal. The shift pattern emblem is actually came with the OBX SpeedStar Shift Knob. Plus this idea I had stolen from someone else. I would give credit to him but I would have to ask him first if he wants the bashing from our respectful SL members.
That's all I have to say, since I sux at when it comes to debating my case.
Scion_shift 01-19-2006, 01:14 AM ^^ and grammar apparently
AtC2nv 01-19-2006, 02:02 AM well as far as i go..i wasn't trying to bash anyone....the mod looks sweet....but ot me it looks like a poser mod...its just my opinion.....n also...i dont think he did it to "hide" his auto tranny....n no one is laughing at him cuz he got an auto....man i freakin hate it when manual owners (like tho one who wrote under my previous post) think that auto tranny's re inferior or sumthin....i dont get laughed at for driving an auto....manual tranny is not for everyone......dont hate on us for driving autos

so what if my english is bad. Make all the smart comments you want. Apprrently "American" wasn't my first or second language.
05-RS1 01-19-2006, 02:40 AM dont you hate it when a simple sharing of ideas turns to a bash fest? :lalala: i think its a good looking mod. some people just prefer to have a shift boot. btw, i dont know how urs looks because i cant seem to find your cardomain link. but i saw it on the other guys and it looks pretty good. the rectanguler trim around it seems to stick out a little though. i have an auto too and i'd do it, but yeh i went the other path and just got a red led to light up the face of the shifter. forget bout all the close minded bashers and keep up the good work!

I second that. Good work, looks great. I thought about doing that too, for I, wanted, but could not get a manual. I wonder if anyone has done that with the parking break... I want to do that.
